In this video I answer the question of Javad Rza "I would like to see your tutorial on volume balance. Sometimes I seem to have balanced everything, but at the mastering stage everything goes in one place and I have to go back and shovel everything all over again."
First of all, it is worth noting that various frequency conflicts and too large dynamic range can prevent us from correctly balancing the volume between instruments.
Therefore, after you have made the primary balance, we do equalization, solve all conflicts, do dynamic processing to narrow the dynamic range. And only then we return to the balance and make the final volume balance to the finish.
Here such a life hack will help us: you can either turn down the volume on the monitors or on the sound card, or directly on the Master to a minimum. Then slowly bring it to the minimum values when you are just starting to hear something. And balance at this volume level, because at the minimum volume values, it is the balance that is best heard, and the compressor operation is also best heard. Therefore, when you configure the compressor, you can also use this life hack.
When we write an arrangement, we want to hear each new instrument better. We want to show it and we unconsciously make this instrument louder. As a result, all these tools compete for our attention in the foreground. But it is worth approaching the process of balancing the volume with a cool head and distributing the instruments into three plans: foreground, middle and far, and we simply get a volumetric mix due to the hierarchical alignment of the balance, even without any additional spatial processing - simply due to the balance of loudness.
Therefore, select three plans, adjust the volume of these plans among themselves so that the middle plan is clearly quieter than the first plan, and the far one is quieter than the middle one.
Another tool that can help us if you don't quite trust your ears yet, or you are working in some new genre for yourself - Tonal Balance Control from iZotope.
There are presets for a variety of genres. If your genre is not in the list here, you can use the "Create Target From Audio File" function and specify as a reference some music track that will serve as a sample. Here we see the volume ranges in which certain instruments should be located.
Well, probably the most common mistake of beginners is going overboard with the bass. If there is no initially correct balance, the whole mix can fall apart. How does this happen? When you write a track, you want to make more bass, so that it swings right away, so that it is powerful and energetic right away... But the bass has the largest amplitude. If you overdo it, when you start to squeeze out the maximum volume, the limiter will be triggered primarily on the bass. As a result, the bass will be limited, everything else will be made louder and the balance between the instruments will collapse.
When we have the right balance, then we strengthen the whole thing and nothing falls apart, but only becomes even louder and more powerful. Sometimes even in order to make the track louder, you need to loosen the bass a little. Perhaps even right on the Master, before maximizing the volume, you can literally weaken the low frequencies below 60 hertz - below 100 hertz with the equalizer by a couple of decibels... And after maximization, oddly enough, the track will become more powerful, because the limiter will amplify the entire track evenly.
