Quarantine kept me grounded for many months, but I snuck out recently for an adventure with my good friend Dominic. The Mission? The Tahoe Twirl, a 190 mile mostly off road bikepacking adventure around beautiful Lake Tahoe. In this episode, we ride up and out of burning hot Reno, back into the alpine, along the famous Flume Trail. Then we eat beans ;)

What do you all think of those views of Lake Tahoe? Riding on the edge was exhilarating!

This is hardly a "Twirl," but an epic ride with killer climbing, descending and single track. THAT is the way to circle the lake!

Would like to see about 20 more minutes of the night sky and drone shots. Edge was very pretty, but maybe not all that exciting as a trail rating.

Spectacular views. I always find riding on the edge of a cliff challenging. You have to focus entirely on the trail and not allow your eyes to look over the cliff. You go were you are looking.

Wow, wow and wow!!! Way to go, fellas! You really brought it to life for us mere mortals, Ryan, and I love Dom's sense of fun. That single-track, where you said it was a bit 'sketchy'......well, I'd say quite a lot more than a bit. Even if my old heart and lungs were up to it, there is absolutely NO WAY you would get me riding along some of that. Kudos to you both! Message for Dom: he mentioned how they make bike-packing specific tents now. Well, Dom, in the 1960s a mate, with whom I bike--packed in Tasmania (on-road of course, there were no off-road bikes back then) had a small 2-man tent with a fly that was made specifically for bike-packing or bike-touring, as it was called back then.

Thats awesome!! Its funny, years ago I made a film about the history of bike packing called "Comes With Baggage" - in making it I found out back around 1900 leather frame bags predated panniers significantly and were sold in some department stores....crazy!

Always remember this tidbit I read in Pierre Burton's ( Canadian journalist and history author) book on the Klondike Gold Rush about a guy who rode a bike right across Western Canada ie Winnipeg thru the mountains from Edmonton onto Dawson. And made it alive! That was 1898. That was some freakin big trip to make alone on cart tracks. Too bad it wasn't expanded upon in the book it was just a footnote in the popular history of the Gold Rush. What a tale untold.

Video tends to make things look even narrower. I've watched videos that blow my mind and then realize it's the effect of the camera and screen. Although the Flume is narrow and exposed in places, the video makes it look more exposed than it is. Nonetheless, it's a "must-do" for anyone riding off road in Tahoe - unless you're some aggro big drop rider; then it's not what you want in Tahoe.

Simply awesome, epic video of one of California's true gems. Thank you! One suggestion: raise that chest camera angle. It's just a bit too much foreground and not enough background to fully appreciate the terrain and beauty of your surroundings. So impressed with your sense of adventure and ability to find the truly great riding spots. We've ridden the Flume several times on the tandem. Fun, but not very challenging. Now Hole in the Ground at Donner Pass is on another level on the tandem! So.much.fun! PS You're riding the Flume backwards!

It's ironic that I've driven through the Sierra to get to Utah about fourteen separate times to mountain bike. And I wouldn't trade it for anything in the world. However, the damn long drives to Utah mean missing more riding days than I could get in the Sierra. Four or more days lost on the road that could be spend riding in and around Tahoe, or Downieville, or Mammoth, or Feather River, or... you get the picture. Don't pass what's at your doorstep if you don't have to!
