Jon Irenicus was the best video game villain ever. He wasn't the most powerful or the scariest VG villain, but he had a level of depth in both his personality and nature that rendered him intoxicating to the mind, I used to spend hours writing short stories inspired on his character. I don't know what was more amazing about him, his misery and loneliness, or his tentative approach to you (he almost had me combined), or his eternal but vengeful love for his woman. What a fascinating character!

When you remember games like these, it's clear what modern RPG-s like TES are missing. Brilliant voice acting, perfectly detailed quests and generally depth in almost every aspect of the game. Everything looks like a work of art. Modern games are all about graphics and cool effects.

The wiki, and websites dedicated to BG2 state he is a mage, and if I recall correctly, you can open Jon Irenicus' character in ShadowKeeper and he is indeed a mage. That would need further testing though. Also, most of what he does pinpoints toward Mage more than Sorcerer. The cowled wizards do say at the beginning "This MAGE'S power is immense, we must overcome him quickly." ;) To add further on that point, Elf spellcasters are usually Mages and not sorcerers, because they value knowledge.

If I had to be a villain, I would wish to be Irenicus. He is the most underrated villain of all time, I would argue that he is an awesome villain on the same level as Darth Vader

I watched every frame of the video until the end. Sooo pleasant memories about BGII and its music... Apart from the excellent acting of Irenicus, this video is memorable for one more thing: the main character's dream with Irenicus' vision of life - the "this woman" example. I'm glad there is an youtube video with this part.

I beat this game 7 times. three times solo with random chars (exploited some bugs with fighter) And my hours spent on this game is remarkable. Like if I told you, you wouldn't believe it. Too bad I don't know it. There is a feeling I get when I hear this music. It takes me back to it's magic realm I spent so much intense focus on. I can feel my magic and feel the weight of the sword almost. I was where I belonged. I'm just explaining the truth about what this game is, it's another dimension.

Anyone else love how long it took the cowled wizards to show when waukeens promenade gets blown all to hell but when u cast a haste spell without a license they are all over u in a quarter of a second?

An excellent tribute to Mr. David Warner's voiceover of our beloved(?) Jon Irenicus. Quite stupid that no one seems to make BG 3. We all know that will sell at least 3 millon copies IF the same voice actors and charachers are involved.

GOD I love this game!!! And, GOD I love Irenicus. You metionned the external factors, but you didn't show it. I would have appreciated to see a fraction of his conversation with Ellesime. Anyway, great video, and the commentary are good for people who don't know the gane, but most of people who will watch this will know the game.

Just playing through BGII:EE and wow Irenicius is more than just a villain. You can literally connect to what he says at times and for those reasons; he's like a hell of a mentor, especially in the dream sequences. It isn't often you can say that about an antagonist. Yeah fancy speeches are not unheard of for gaming villains but how many will actually make you reflect on them. Irenicius makes speeches that not only sound good; they also are capable of making you reflect on them. :)

Superbly cut video. Jon Irenicus is definitely my favourite game villain. Sarevok was great too, but Irenicus was more vocal and of course immensely powerful. With Irenicus, the great story, the thrilling "cut-scenes" and just an amazing playability this game is my all-time favourite. I surely hope the newly resurrected Black Isle will show the rest of the game companies that games should have large amount of content, depth and an actual story instead of the dumbed down crap we get nowadays.

"Do you cling to the past or can you see through the pain?" I love that quote. Jon Irenicus is an amazing villian.. No one can hardly compare.. Such ruthlessness.. Oh I hope the finish Baldur's Gate 3 soon...I hope he's in it..I want them to make a game where we can explore his life.

Joneleth Irenicus is a failed demigod. He can easily cast spells of 9th level or greater seemingly instantly.

If you open up his character in Shadow keeper and look at the effects tab, you will see that he has an effect that gives him permanent Improved Aclarity. So it is not necessarily his spell casting speed that you are referring to, it is the fact that he can cast spell after spell without having to wait for the cool down time in between. The player character can achieve similar effects with items like the Amulet of Power and having a Contingency set to cast Improved Aclarity when an enemy is spotted.

@TheDoah Simply walk behind the target and attack. If positioned correctly and with the right weapon, it will score as a backstab.

Actually I was mistaken, he was one of the designers of BG 2 and the lead writer for KOTOR and the Dragon Age Games. David Gaiter is his name.

He truly is a fantastic character and voiced absolutely perfectly by David Warner. You just despise him at the beginning, but by the end of the game you can almost feel a shred of pity for him.. even thou he goes right off the deep end after that "event". I don't want to say any spoilers, the best and I think Main point of this game is too really digest and appreciate BG2 fantastic story. I go back to this game because the story is Timeless, like a really good book.

It is slightly modded indeed. I use the icewind dale spell casting models instead of the BG2's... But where do you access that "Gore: On" switch? I might just re-upload the video. :) About the left out scenes though... couldn't do much. The absolute maximum video length for youtube is 11:00, in minutes. Not even a thousandth of a second more. And this video lasts 10:57. :) Thanks for the comments!

Well, just for your information then: "Ganondorf is commonly portrayed as the incarnation of pure evil, greed and power. He is ruthless, cold and calculating seeing all others as either tools to be used or enemies to be destroyed." from Zeldapedia. I can recall many villains in many movies and many games who have the same personality as him. The embodiement of hatred is simply a villain's way. How "best" a villain is, however, should not be defined only by its hatred of all life. :)

@captainsealed It isn't included for 2 reasons... 1. It is too long and this isn't Jon Irenicus' biography. Most would agree that Jon Irenicus' most epic retorts happen before that dialog, throughout the game, except for one, which I included in the video. 2. I thrived to include as few spoilers as possible into my video. Considering as the dialog happens pretty much at the end of the story, it wasn't advisable to insert it.

@odie1610 and NightwishRaven999 Definitely. Baldur's Gate 2 is a different game, on a whole another level. It is an experience, both in storytelling and gameplay-wise. It is when you play games like BG2 that you truly can realize there are developers and directors out there who have a passion for their work. A masterpiece, BG2 is.

i liked the german voice of irenicus somehow more. while both voice actors are pronouncing great, the german voice is just more unique. man i wished to play a game wher u are such a badass villian

@DemonRaziel123 There is no "true" online feature for Baldur's Gate. Multiplayer is by TCP/IP or modem, which means you cannot just find a game online and join it. You have to know the host, or be aware of the IP by any other means. By modem you need to know the telephone number of the host. You are free to find friends and play with them online though.

@simbelanger1 No, I haven't played Baldur's Gate 1, because I can't find it anywhere. And yes. I have completed the game, but I'm from Finland, so I can't quite understand what they say in Baldur's gate II.

Ahh, Irenicus... he went down fighting, even at the very end, even beyond it, didn't he? It's just too bad there's isn't much to redeem in the character. He more or less got what he deserved. But you know, I felt like this battle wasn't as tough as BG1's. Don't get me wrong, it took a reload, a couple of timely resurrections, and turning Slayer for me to beat Irenicus, but that all-star lineup at the end of BG1, combined with the traps, had me shaking my head.
