In my entire playthough of Baldurs Gate 3 i never once encounterd dodgy voice acting. This includes animal voices. Its an incredible achievement

More importantly for me I never encountered dialogue options that didn't offer a choice I would WANT to say. It was always appropriate for me, and I think I am not a well represented type of person in games. It is an astounding achievement. Black Isle/Bioware D&D games were always good about that and Larian was faithful to their pedigree.

It honestly is crazy. I might be wrong but I think BG3 both has the largest quantity of voice acted lines, and the highest quality of voice acted lines of any video game. And I think that’s a series underrated aspect that adds to your immersion.

And unlike Starfield, the conversations are supremely animated and lip synced. Like, you can see Larian's passion for this project throughout. There are still bugs and glitches, but Larian is the one fixing them. I give Bethesda maybe six months of halfheartedly patching Starfield before they move on and leave it in the hands of the modders like they always do.

Try playing some Indie Games. Their 100x better because their not needing to follow the same formula for years and years because they worked before. And the devs are the same people playing the games so they know what people will enjoy. And unlike AAA companies their sole purpose isn't always to get rich since often they just want to make their dream game. Great examples of this are probably Stardew Valley or Hollow Knight to name the big ones.

@@safs3098 Yup you're correct, in a AAA company the devs are rarely if ever to blame because they don't make all the important decision they "just" make the game. That leads to greedy and poor decision making by the execs that just want money but don't know jack shit about games or why people like them. The fact that most of these poorly launched games get "fixed" with patches is proof that the devs actually do know how to make games but they don't have the time to.

I don't agree with everything in the video, well I don't think that game producers are doing anything wrong.. they are just reacting to the market. If market wants games with microtransactions then that's what they will produce. Companies are not in charge of the market, it's the customers! Company just releases a product (game) and they judge the success of it by looking at the sales: good sales = good game, bad sales = bad game (change design). That's it, it's up to the market forces to determine what sort of games are being produced, it's not up to the devs. If for some reason market changed and microtransactions doesn't sell anymore then they are forced by the market to design different types of games, so if anything, you have to blame the market (or customers) not the companies

@Regden1000 Somehow I seriously doubt either of those things. I have played and beaten Elden Ring. Needed a lot of work to be a true master work. It definitely had a lot of problems but it was an enjoyable enough game. Seriously disagree with this guy in the video though. It's world design is not great. Not even close. It is a souls game in an open world environment but that open world, while quite beautiful, is actually very tacked on. And a modern isometric RPG is nothing new and BG3 is definitely no Planescape Torment or even Baldur's Gate 2. I think the isometric style needs to evolve into a full on third person or first person RPG with all the great writing and direction of CRPGs. Except the millennial writing in modern games. Seriously needs to stop. When we get a full blown AAA first or third person game with amazing gameplay, excellent world crafting and exploration, and the quality writing of great CRPG's that is when we will have a real wake up call. At least for western RPGs.

If you do get tired of it at some point, I can recommend Divinity Original Sin 2. It's also a Larian game, which functions a bit like BG3. It does lack the amazing cutscenes, but it also has origin characters as well as the capability to make your own unique character. The music in DOS2 is imho, even better than in BG3. The story and characters are also really good. The freedom of choice is also there. And the game is just immensely beautiful. Instead of the DnD rules for combat, they have their own system. Disabling effects can only be used when either magical armor, or physical armor is depleted (the same type of armor needs to be removed for that type of effect). And that game has greater synergies between elements, in the sense that having a wet target is a HUGE buff to frost and electric attacks, while oil and gas amplify explosions and fire. But more than anything, DOS2 has that same clear passion showing through as BG3 and elden ring. It clearly gives the same vibe that the people who made the game, truly loved making it.

Let me put it this way. BG3 sucked me into the story and my characters in less than 30 minutes. The world around me and the people I talked to offered me stories and problems to solve that actually made me consider my morals and the different implications of each outcome. Full world exploration wasn’t shoved in my face, but was heavily encouraged from the interactions I had had by just going off the beaten path even just a little bit. Quests and battles aren’t easy, and actually make you think about the best way to solve them, until you get the hang of the game and start looking tactically at not only your characters but also the environment. The game assumes you’re not a idiot and knows not to waste your time by constantly giving you character progression and interesting problems, and if none of those things interest you, don’t do them. You can miss companions completely if you don’t care, or you could find more than you bargained for by just looking a little bit. It’s a great game. The only one I’ve even wanted to play over the last 2 weeks, and tbh newer games are nowhere on my radar. I could keep going. The music. The voice acting. It’s all great. Spend the money. You deserve this game.

Thats arguable why FromSoftware games always feels so satisfying to play and beat. They trust the player to be smart enough to figure things out on their own without holding their hand and throwing things in their face constantly to play their game the way the devs want you to. BG3 is the first game, in a very long time, that made me laugh so hard I actually choked on my own spit, cry so hard I needed to grab the tissues, and scream out loud multiple times as well as feel like the world melted away and didn't matter so much. It has it's bugs, for sure, but because of the care they obviously put into it and the vast scope as well as the rate they're rolling out the patches and hotfixes and listening to their fanbase without crumbling under us--this game is truly a masterpiece and the experience as a whole has felt like a once-in-a-lifetime thing. Larian has earned our trust; I hope other companies have learned from their model. Put the game out into Early Access, let the players that want to help you through the early stages and beta it for a price, give them a say and "make them feel important" and then release it in a way more polished state than many games are coming out in these days. Were there some sections that were hinky? Oh yeah, Act 3 has some sections that were buggy. But we are forgiving because Larian was so upfront and transparent with us.

What has been frustrating as someone who has enjoyed RPGs since I could read, is seeing the dialogue options disappear over time. Fallout 3 has a ton of different dialogue options, but most are just a way of expressing your character but lead to the same outcome. Fallout 2 had far more options and outcomes for dialogue. But the streamlining of RPGs has usually boiled down important player choices to four options "Yes." "Yes, but mean." "Repeat what you just said" and "I'll talk to you later".

I just wanted to point out something that is very important to consider here and mainly focusing on the fact that at least we should still care about the processes. Around 7:30, Asmon starts going off about how videogames are made, and the video also talks about we should "JUST" care about the end product. I think it is also important to understand the work that is being done and the processes around it. You can't just say you only care about the product because you hear the same complaints after the fact the product is launched. The companies who really care about their client base tempers this expectation by showing you that they care, that they meticulously ensure that the standards are being met, and the mission/vision is still aligned down to the very lowest role in the company. I've been in healthcare for a decade now, I understand this is a totally different field but hear me out. We follow a LEAN concept where we avoid "defects" from ever reaching the client. There's a whole thing about "continuous improvement process", the "toyota way" etc, but I don't want to go off on that. It focuses on VALUE, but sustained process of delivering VALUE. Now lives are what we're talking about here and I get that healthcare is more critical in this field. But apply that same concept here in gaming, aren't lives also being affected here? You spent X exuberant hours playing a game, and then you complain that a certain game sucks. Now can you get that amount of time back? I think we have to start treating creating videogames with the same amount of dedication and care in making them. We should also start recognizing and putting these developers as the benchmark, who continues to deliver games and treats previous experiences. Putting previous projects in a PDSA cycle and continues to improve year in year out. This is why we keep seeing the same mistakes, the weird "silo'ed" work, as if the other teams within that company has not already resolved the issues that others are facing. Bottomline, we have to care about the process, we have to care about who we support. Do you just buy a product just as a finished product and not care about the process? Global warming, overly processed foods, carcinogens come to mind when we just blindly want a "product" and not care about how it was made.

The difference on the debacle for FF14 is, Yoshi-P came out, was humble and said what the issues were and how they were gonna deal with it to "get where it needed to be". and to add on that, Yoshi-P is very open about the vision and "what were gonna do" otherwise, so FF has gotten a lot of "good will" in the playerbases eyes, did some stuff suck? yes. did some players quit? yes. were some players mad? yes. Yoshi-P still went out, took the blame as the "I am in charge, this is my fault" he may have pointed at different factors, but he still took the blame. I don't see Kotick doing that, Blizzard went and put 3 nervous guys to break the news on the "no PvE" (shut it, I know they released something of the sort, but it wasn't IT). Yoshi-P went out there knowing, this would affect images of him, but did it anyhow, Kotick is sitting and (sorry for the expression) wiping his ass with 100$ bills and couldn't give 2 fucks about whom or what has been affected.

I would rather the companies go back to taking 2-3 years to make a game, make it quality, from developers who LOVE the product they are making and creating a vision they have in their heads, rather than turning out another Call of Doody every year at a higher price tag with less content.

How can you expect to write a good book or compose a good song if you dont enjoy reading or music. i think the best possible situation is a studio like larian. Theyre privately owned so they dont need to bow to the whims of shareholders, but the guy that owns that private company is a huge nerd, especially when it comes to games. Companies are designed by nature to be top down, and if the guys at the very top dont give a shit about games, it becomes very apparent at every single level of development.

The one thing I can't stand about Baldur's Gate 3 is the action bar. Its so messy, all the time. If you switch abilities tied to equipment or spell slots you have to re-order them whenever a change happens unless you can stand the chaos of your melee action being anywhere instead of in one place. The rest of the UI is alright honestly.

Why is BG3 so good? It's simple. NEVER, not ONCE in my 500 hours of Baldurs Gate 3 have I felt like I'm fetching a macguffin. NOT ONCE. Each quest is a story, a real engaging story, with history, relevance, and impact. That's why it's fun to play.

A lot of that relies on it being based off of DnD, but I think a larger part relies on Larian being amazing storytellers that make even the most mundane of quests feel engaging. Not to mention, they know how to subvert expectations properly. Right off the nautiloid you think you're going straight into a town through that big front door you walk up to, but instead, they make you traverse the nearby wreckage and the wilderness in search of a village or town. That alone drew me into the world's exploration.

There's a lot of interesting points here that haven't been get stressed enough. A lot of companies (gaming or otherwise) strive to create an emotional connection with the user, but as a whole, the connection is only one-way. So, whenever a company makes a move toward something more anti-consumer, they have a lot of people quick to defend them. It is very rare to see the emotional tie shared back toward the user, and when it is, it usually seems like it is done to try to repair a trust that was broken so they don't lose all of their customers (e.g. something like No Man's Sky, which has been coming up with constant, substantial free updates since 2016, including stuff like a free VR version, compared to other companies that tack it on and charge full price).

Ever since mists of pandaria launched/ended i've been wondering if i outgrew video games. I'm glad BG3 proved me wrong in that regard. I'm not too old for video games, and i also haven't seen all there is meaning that anything newly released just feels bland and dull. Developers just suck lately. I call bullshit on them working on it for that long. I mean look at manor lords. Saying your game has been in development for that long just creates a hype. A great take. I'm a huge fan of CD Projekt Red, they earned enough "currency" from me on the Witcher 3 that when Cyber Punk came out I was like: Yeah okay this is not good. It has potential but its current state to me is not worth what i Pre Ordered for. But I trust their intentions and their competency to eventually get it right and the game is a lot better today than it is at launch. Will I pre order from them again? Probably not, they lost some currency on the state of CP 2077 at launch vs what they advertised. If Witcher 4 isn't good they'll lose even more or if its good they'll earn some back. The Currency analogy is just spot on. The other thing that irks me is they act like Gamers are completely ignorant of how games are made. If that was the case you wouldn't hear the phrase "and can you believe this was made by X (a small) number of people? That statement right there says: " My value proposition was met so well that I can't believe this didn't cost more to make, or wasn't expecting it for some other reason". It means the game had features, style, or some other factor that was done to the complete satisfaction of the user. If you know Lean Six Sigma (a project management and efficiency course I imagine many project managers at game companies have taken) they call those "delighters" or: A "delighter is a feature, also called latent requirements, that is not basic and expected but desirable and unexpected". It's not our job as the consumer to know this stuff but my point is that these big companies have people who's job it is to know and understand these concepts. If you don't scale well from the small company that delighted us and end up being the multi million/billion dollar company that dissatisfies us, that's not our failure as the consumer. Instead of trying to denigrate Larian you should be celebrating their success and taking inspiration. I heard the (former) CEO of the company I work for say something to the extent of we should celebrate the success of our competition because it should inspire us and drive us to do better. i think the main reason for having ingame currencies isn't to obfuscate how much money is spent (though that is probably a reason). i think the main reason is so that they can do the thing where a skin or something costs 500 of that currency and you can only buy it in incements of 200, 400, 1100 and so on and make each individual point cheaper if you buy them in bulk. that way you'd have to buy at least 600 and the last 200 are more expensive per point compared to the last 100 you'd have missing if a 500 option existed. additionally, now that you had to buy 600, you'll have 100 left sitting around and since people see that as wasted they are more inclined to buy something else with those points, even if they have to spend extra money to do so.

Sounds like you would like to work at an indie/small company - you have to wear more hats as a result, and do less of your "actual role", but you get massive creative freedom.

I think everyone can concur that when 30 layers of middle and upper level management who spend most of their time having unproductive, marathon long meetings are involved, nothing gets done.

My three favorite games were made with crazy time and/or budget issues. Pathologic (og and 2), Fallout New Vegas, and BG3. Budget and time are used as a scapegoat, when priorities are the real problem. A playthrough of Pathologic is only about 25 hours and the animation is pretty ugly, but the storytelling is phenomenal. Smaller games with a tight story and clear focus are loved for years and years. Gamers aren't stupid. We know laziness and greed when we play it.

I've only played like 4 hours of BG3 so far, but it's been great 👍. The voice acting is just right, like they really actually care about the situation. The characters are interesting enough that it made me want to talk to just about everyone (unlike Starfield, which fails to captivate interest 99% of the time). Even the combat is cool. The UI is mostly intuitive, so it's easy to figure it out and fun to explore. The almost runescape-esque backpack system brings back a welcome bit of nostalgia and works well enough. The story is interesting, and there's a lot of funny things that happen. While it's a turn-by-turn combat game, it still feels like there's always something to do and think about. There's a real challenge to the fights, and sometimes you're going to want to save/reload failed rolls or fights. The great thing is, you're not blocked from doing it. You can save at just about any point in time, so if you're worried about f*ing something up, just save right there and then. The artistic style is very cool, and the graphics are pretty good 👍, which is a cherry on top.

Quick update: I'm already at over 75 hrs into the game with multiple characters in multiplayer and single player. Still loving it.
