I recently made a pilgrimage to the Holy Land for Easter. It was... Bernard of Chartres once said we're dwarves standing on the shoulders of giants. That's what it was like. You could feel everyone who came before from the modern world, to the medieval, to the ancient and classical, and the time of Christ... It was humbling. I've been following y'all channel for a while. Y'all fight the good fight because it's already won. Keep up the great work.

Dang, this kid defeated an experienced commander in battle at the age of 16! While he was fighting a disease at the same time! When I was 16, I was still very much a child in the way I conducted myself. Baldwin IV is right up there with Alexander The Great in terms of skill as a battle field commander and tactician.

People in the Middle Ages had to mature fast, they usually died rather young, they didn't have much time. Although the fact that the medieval world was filled with young people much more than today does explain why some, like Renoud de Châtillon, behaved very immature.

When your life is on the clock like this, every decision and action you make matters. If you are king and people depend on you, you put them ahead of yourself. Like FDR, one of America's greatest presidents, having a life long, severe, progressive disease may help someone care more about the disadvantaged. Jesus, if the Bible has at least some truth to it, also elevated those with leprosy, the poor and downtrodden. Its too bad only a small percentage of modern Christians live by their example of love, acceptance and compassion, or even try to.....

So how did Balwdin contract leprosy? Anybody have any recording how? Imagine being in his shoes, having to rule a kingdom in the middle of the crusades, while being a king stricken with leprosy. No way to have a queen and have kids, knowing youre deteriorating by the day, and knowing your life will end soon... What a stud, to have pulled off what he did during his reign and time on Earth. Gawd I wish I had a time machine. 1

Pretty sure he contracted from the person that he was always with OR the bacteria starts growing inside his body.

Leprosy isn't very contagious, you have to spend a lot of time around Lepers to catch it. He must have been around a Leper a lot. Weird they'd let a prince hang with a Leper.

It is believed he contracted it off of someone who expressed the leprosy in very minor ways or hid it to a good extent.

Leprosy can last a long time before the sores appear. He probably contracted it from someone (like a knight or teacher who took care of him) who had no visible symptoms and spread it to him through touch. That’s my guess.

It’s interesting to consider that he may not have grown up so noble without the leprosy. Many of the great leaders, like Abe Lincoln who grew up working alongside black laborers and slaves as his labor was sold by his father, are instilled with an empathy and purpose through those sufferings. The pretensions and vain excesses lose their appeal, and what truly matters comes into sharper focus. This is frequently the end result when one is forced by tragedy or strife to confront one’s own limitations and mortality that, should they be overcome, will yield them a honed sense of self and purpose which will better steel them against future challenges than any teaching or tangible resources ever could. I don’t think it’s a coincidence that so many of the great leaders of the past struggled through their early life, and so many megalomaniacal disasters had a charmed and easy upbringing.

Fulk V of Anjou (Foulques V d'Anjou) but not Fulk V, king of Jerusalem. He is the first Fulk to govern Jerusalem, but he does not wear the official title of king. He was the husband of Queen Melisende, daughter of the King of Jerusalem, Baldwin II (Baudouin II). Fulk is the son of the Count of Anjou, Fulk IV (Foulques IV d'Anjou). It is not therefore as king, but as Count of Anjou that his name is Fulk V (Foulques V of Anjou). But that does not change your story. Incredible! Your Majesty! ;)
