I remember going into a piano store with a buddy sailor when the two of us were serving in the U.S. Navy and a very nice salesman let us try out, to our hearts' content, the SD-10 Baldwin concert grands that he had in stock in his Washington, D.C. business. The two of us, classically trained pianists, were simply awestruck at the beauty, power, and balance of registers on these gorgeous and wonderful instruments. They ecliopsed the Steinway pianos that the Navy purchased and used (to the point of near-collapse, to be fair) during those years (the early 1960s). These were in the SD line of Baldwin concert grand pianos, SD-10s, I think. The two of us sailors were simply thunderstruck that pianos of such instruments even existed.

Oops, I forgot that I already had written about that experience. It was quite an experience, though.

This is a real gem of a piano! The tone reminds me very much of my 1978 Baldwin SD-10. Robert, your selections and your playing really shows off this ultra world class instrument's beauty of tone.

Good choice of musical selections to highlight the piano's capabilities. The bass end is very clean (doesn't growl).

Beefier and more brilliant than a Steinway Model D ever even thought about being. That fabulous Baldwin tone!!! The Op. 48, No. 1 was a great choice!!! Too bad we didn't get the next section. It's my favorite part! 😃

I've played on a variety of high end pianos, Steinway, Yamaha, and on down the list to that crap Kohlar. My Howard by Baldwin studio, thats my girl. Maybe it's a me thing since she's mine since 1965; I call her "Girl". Was amazes at the sound of a new Yamaha upright about 1980.

Wow! What a fantastic instrument, Robert! Yesterday I watched the Bosendorfer concert grand, and now the Baldwin concert grand. All you need is a Bechstein concert grand (my favorite). :-)

Yes... please do one on the 'Bechstein' concert grand, Robert.

I remember back in 1962 when a piano-playing friend and I, both intense on classical piano performance back then, encountered a new Baldwin SD-10 and a salesman explained what made it so special. We really were swept away by its quality. I still love Baldwin's grands, although its uprights are downright UNlovable!

Personally I always loved baldwins uprights. They weren’t as refined as the grands but always had a rich tone and the actions were decent too. They were great pianos for churches, homes, and schools just because they take such a beating. They weren’t competing with the level of uprights that Schimmel and C. Bechstein could produce.

You are right about the studio and larger uprights. Mostly what I encountered were the Acrosonic console pianos, which were rugged and durable, but rather harsh to the ears.

Truly a rival to a good Steinway!!
@hankaustin70916 жыл бұрын
You are correct! Back in the '60s and '70s, Baldwin was Steinway's biggest competitor here in the USA. Steinway had started to decline and Baldwin picked up the slack and ran with it for several years, producing fantastic sounding concert grands. However, once Steinway saw their profits slipping so badly, they hitched up their drawers and got back to making world-class pianos once again, and have never looked back since.
