Bale unrollers galore at Green Pastures Farm, great pasture fertilizer tool. When you have to feed a bale of hay, make it pay! By unrolling your hay across your pasture, this process spreads carbon, seed, manure and urine over a large area. This allows you to grow more grass the coming growing season without spreading chemical fertilizers. You can use this process to always keep your animals moving onto clean pasture through the dormant season if you run out of grass to graze. No pasture ruts, no tractors needed, just an ATV.

I just received my Greg Judy bale unroller December 2, 2023. I purchased my unroller from Roots Cause in northeast TN and couldn't be happier with the service. Great people, great support. I have used this bale unroller twice so far. I currently feed one bale every two days. I am giving myself a solid B grade and am sure I will get better with each use. I have been able to use this machine completely by myself. Having a second person if only to eyeball the initial hook up would be greatly appreciated. I am looking forward to Spring when I am hoping to see the improved growth. Last year I got stuck in the deep mud around one of my three bale rings. You don't get hurt falling in mud but it is not easy to extract yourself from the mud hands. Thank you Greg for your videos and this machine.

Can you rig up a mirror on your buggy to aid in lining up correctly? Or set out lines or cones from your bale to guide you?
@gregjudyregenerativerancher

Yes you could do that. The more you use it, the better you get at backing it up.

The mirrors came in the mail yesterday. I agree with you. It's going to be my first tool to help. Drew suggested backing up the buggy by itself to the proper position on the bale. I can try that but my strength is limited to then lift the tongue and place it on the ball. I also bought the two tennis balls on magnetic sticks to help. I might prop the tongue on a cinder block, attach the magnet on the tongue and the RTV ball and see how close I could get@@user-kv2pt4lu9y

Using this do you use more hay than using a hay ring. I ask because I want to know if I need to get more round bales to cover my self.

I'm not sure. Jim Gerrish says we are soil/microbe farmers not cattle farmers. The benefits might be a year away, not immediate. I currently have 51 animals. I am planning on selling as many as possible as soon as I can get some help loading them in the trailer. I think it would be wise to sell additional cattle now while the prices are still good than pay for hay bought in the middle of winter. I'm hoping my cows can make more beautiful heifers next year if I have to sell most of this year's heifer crop. Tough choices. Next year I want to have more grass than I have hungry mouths to feed. There is no sweeter sound than cows enjoying a grass feast. My thought is feed the soil and reap the rewards! My friends question my sanity. An important benefit is not taking a 65HP tractor compacting my soil and instead driving my RTV@@mikecrouch949

Got mine from Drew Wilson at Roots Cause LLC in Greenville TN. Excellent to work with. We traveled 2 1/2 hrs on the interstate at 70 mph, no problems. One of the best things about the unroller for me is that I can feed as much or as little of the bale as I need. Most days I only put out a 1/2 roll. Great tool.

Greg I would love to see you guys make a detailed video on using your bale unroller. Every from A to Z. I'd like to see how you handle lopsided bales etc. This is my second year using this fantastic tool but I'm sure there are subtle ways of improving the user experience. I hate to admit that I have been struck twice by the winch handle when it slipped out of my cold wet gloves. Now I have a personal rule to always use two hands on the handle when lowering a load. Well duh but I would have rather learned that lesson from your video. 😄 I see you have beefed up the end of the spikes since I purchased mine. Great improvement! The cattle I bought from you are doing well and in fact I just made my very first sale of half a dozen head. Very pleased about that. Keep up the excellent work! Many blessings, Doc

I built one for the cost of the welding rods and a few grinding disc'smaybe 80 bucks? Used parts from an old baler and header transport etc. I pull mine with my tractor but instead of a winch, I put on a hydraulic cylinder off an old front end loader. My next step is I plan to also make the bale spikes which I made from an old seeder, also hydraulic. Back up, poke the spikes, pick up and go. Just sharing for the fabricators. Real easy to make, and cheap if you have any kind of old machinery kicking around.

Thanks for the video! I was wondering about if it would fit in my truck and yes it would. My truck bed is 98” without using the tailgate. I been looking up how much fertilizer is in a round bale and it’s around $70-80 worth of fertilizer.

Greg, is your bale roller patented? It's a genius invention, and you deserve to derive all the benefits from it.

Imagine if one planted Ray's crazy mix into that field? You wouldn't even be able to see the cattle. 7 foot tall grass.

Greg bought a sawmill and makes lumber. I bought a 300-amp welder so I can build me a hay unroller (and a couple hundred other things). Have scrap, will fabricate! I hope y'all sell a bunch because I know it's the best way to feed hay. Have timber too, maybe I'll make a band mill from a golf cart. Going to sell most of the lumber-what isn't used for building and mushrooms. The main thing is WE ALL GET to unroll some hay! Spread it around. It's a crying shame how many bales rot down to nothing on the edges of the fields they were taken from. The fields suffer. The fencerows and brush get thicker--great for wildlife I suppose, nothing for grazers.

Greg, could you please give an update on your Kansas Rock Salt use experiment? Did it work or was it not worth the time or cost? Thanks!

Great video. New to this. Is there one type of hay better than another when looking to feed and seed? Thanks Parrottsville, TN

I have a question along these lines - does it matter if the hay is sprayed with herbicides? Will that prevent microbial growth in your field and thus stunt the overall growth?

Second the sediment, unroll your hay, sure allows the whole bunch to eat. I run my sheep and cows together, even have my chickens scratching through the little bit left on the ground. Oh and don’t forget the underground livestock, feed ‘‘em all without any fighting. You can’t do that with ANY type of manger. Called my neighbor back this morning… said he had my cows in him yesterday, I have my flerd strip grazing through my middle pastures, all were accounted for last night, including bulls. He said well maybe they just snuck over there to get some crystal licks and got back in😳.

how far do you normally pull your bales on the bale unroller to the area you'll feed it? do you stage them in certain paddocks before winter or pull them straight from the bale yard out over the pasture?

Our bales are strategically placed around our farm in the summer time and placed on logs to prevent the bottom of them from rotting.
