This has been a national holiday started before Eid al Fitri on 2nd of May 2022. Lots of domestic tourists visit Bali. Those from Java, usually came with their cars. But, the holiday ends tomorrow, 8th of May. Most of them are leaving Bali. You will have less traffic.

This is bit misleading, you are comparing the prices in the peak of pandemic and saying it has increased multiple fold. Did you even check the prices before pandemic, they had to reduce 50-80 percent from their regular price just to keep going. Technically they are just increasing to what they used to charge and you make it sound like Balinese are money grabbing opportunists. They still have to make a decent living you know. Don’t go wanting luxury at the expense of the Balinese people!

Bali has been one of digital nomad writer destination since pre pandemic, if Bali has return to pre pandemic condition the question of whether its still "expat friendly" is absurd. Its obvious we cant expect the pricing and condition would be the same as the pandemic time of course. Maybe a better question would be whether Bali is suitable for those with "pandemic budget"

Honestly glad to hear Bali is getting back to normal. I was there for 4 months this winter and it was devastating to see how westerners lived compared to locals. Hoping their economy recovers soon! I don't see why it wouldn't be expat friendly anymore. What makes a country expat friendly? Countries where the average income is so low compared to your own country, that you can live like a royal? I don't get it..

What I see is more expats moving to specific areas that are open and opening "western" style restaurants and shops and zero account for keeping the islands culture alive. Its just turning into a giant europe where every resto has the same menu and a coffee shop every 20 meters. Its created a huge market bubble in the Canggu area due to other areas having slower movement opening. it will backfire soon. I wish expats would support the local warungs more, Balinese culture is so beautiful.

@matar7717

I agree! I think of this as modern colonialism. Western people come, live in houses, build resorts and the prices rise high. For tourists and outsiders it's still cheaper, but imagine living there every day. People are fighting to get around. Women are begging to give you a "manicure, pedicure, massage" just to let their children go to school. And the amount of people who come back with a Balinese wife disgust me (I love to see a lovely couple, don't get me wrong). It reminds me of the 'Njai', during the colonization a lot of colonists took Balinese women as their concubine and did as they please with them. The amount of women being raped by tourist is insane. Yes prices are high for tourists, but the locals are suffering, sitting in tourist's garbage and getting nothing out of it. All the money goes to resorts exploited by foreigners. If this isn't modern colonialism tell me what it is. It's sad our government need to do something indeed!

@@BusFansWNG2024 Very right indeed! But even tough the government is acting against this phenomenon, it will not be enough. The problem also lies in the glorification and exoticism of the island. I was walking in the bookshop the other day and saw a book from Taschen 'Living in Bali'. The book contained beautiful pictures of villa's. A depiction of a lifestyle no Westerner could refuse. The advertisements next to bus stations with 'jaw dropping prizes' next to a beautiful beach sayin that paradise is just 700 eur away. Even if the government succeeds in regulating tourists, the glorification will still happen (maybe even more). Nothing has changed since 1800, 'Orientalism' then has just evolved to fit our time. It happens everywhere in the world indeed, but it pains my heart to see this in my motherland. Starting to be less dependent of tourism is step one! You are correct, but it can not work, in my opinion, without a change of mentality of the tourist. I'm sorry for my blabing. If I may ask do you live in Indonesia?

I think tourism site like Canggu, Seminyak, Kuta, Sanur is enough... And don't expand Canggu like tourism site in north or west Bali.. let north and west doing another economic activity based one natural resource as like tea or coffe plantation, farming, fishing, permaculture and little bit manufacture. Visiting Bali is always enjoying. But better for me visit north like Ubud, Lovina, karangasem and spending all my money there rather than in Kuta or Canggu. Everything in Europe is much more expensive right now. Groceries for 2 people/week easily cost €100, fuels also expensive, breakfast for 2 cost around €30. So for us, Bali still much cheaper😉 Thank for the update!

Much obliged for these factual comments Jay and Alina. I can't tell whether an increase in road traffic is actually related to a holiday season peak, so I reluctantly agree this perception might be subjective. Whereas it is quite obvious the multiplication of buildings sites you observe is a sign the country is undergoing significant structural changes. I was seeking a place for a peaceful retirement and I must say your comments made me think twice about Bali. Quite a shame, really. But many thanks for being so straightforward and direct. Your comment was incredibly useful for a person in my situation.

Dunno what you mean by us letting it happen? Tickets are more expensive because many airlines have not restarted all connections, they've suffered and continue to suffer losses due to covid. US airlines that dropped mask mandate are now cancelling flights because of staff shortages related to covid. Many people in Bali have lost their businesses, many people around the world have lost their loved ones. You just have to pay more for a ticket...

There are some reasonably priced villas in Bali BUT, There are some agents/owners who are doubling and tripling the Pre-Covid prices. In 2019/20 a 10-15million/ mon villa is now 30+++! The avg tourist stays in bali 2.67 days but those who stay long term will start looking at other places to go Being inexpensive was a big draw for international tourists and they put more money into the pockets of the island and locals for longer period. This does not bode well for Bali getting back to normal It’s sad the short sightedness will do a lot of harm to the 80% of locals that depend on tourism and the 68% of gdp the island depends on from tourism

@@NerisaFinau I totally agree with you! I found Phuket to be a toilet, we have been to bali several times and always loved it ,but for me it started to change about 5 years ago when masses of Japanese and Chinese started coming,they only travel around in coaches not using taxi,scooter etc and the Chinese at buffet breakfast would fill there bags up with food,the local staff detested them and at some of the shopping malls prices reflected what they were prepared to pay ($ 130) for a polo shirt!!!!!! We used to stay at the padma legian, but the basic rooms are above $ 400 AUS pn !!!!

It wont stay busy for long, put your holidays off a few months and you should be getting great deals. The currency will drop to nothing with western rates rising rapidly for the first time in a decade, and as inflation soars, rates rise, and fuel at all time highs many will put off luxury items, its the first thing to go. Travel is luxury. Only thing might save it a bit is the currency being trashed, and whatever you do dont invest there.

It seems to me that a lot of "digital nomads" believe things need to fit to their needs. If there is no demand, the prices will be low. If there is high demand, the prices definitely will go up! During 2 years of lockdowns, that was not the REAL BALI People were living in a fantasy world! You feel rents are too high? Find a cheaper place or build your own house You feel food is too expensive? Change your menu or start farming and harvest your own food. Too much traffic? Dont use car or motorbike and start walking! I am more than happy Bali is back to normal. I was away in Vietnam for 3 years during pandemic and able to visit Bali during Idul Fitri last May. I simply loved it to drive and get stuck in traffic.
