Baling Hay our 3rd Cut of Hay went good for a while...

Today I am baling our third cut of hay. I am baling the hay alone again and everything went good until I ran out of wire in the baler.
Equipment used:
Case 730 tractor
New Holland 78 Square baler - Wire Tie baler
Sears/David Bradley Wagon

In a previous video you talked about the Hood on your Tractor. Try checking out an auto body shop for any of those fasteners that are hard to find. I've been able to find almost anything in their catalogues, it's worth a try.

For this being your first year putting up hay, you are doing a great job. That's a lot of work by yourself running back and forth stacking bales. Great video.

Just an observation Evan, you can probably fill your wagon and drop it, finish baling take the tractor and the baller back to the hewse grab your truck luck up the wagon, and throw the twenty or so. You have left over in the bed.

My dad and his uncle, along with the kids, would bale hay. Using our Oliver 77 and a NH baler, we could put up 1000 bales a day. We used a six or seven person crew of adults and kids. Once the boys were about 12, they would be operating the tractors.

Good job! Try smearing some grease on the slides of the transport/ field position swing. Anyway you put up small bales by yourself is nothing but work! LOL 👍

I found one of my lost hay hooks with a tractor tire. Also found deer 🦌 antler sheds with a tractor tire ☹️ Keep up the good work 👍😊

After bale slide is polished up you might want to get some liqiud spray wax and give it a coat will prevent some oxidation over winter storage

Oh Evan,, We used to Bale small Bale hay many years ago,, 80's 90's don't miss it one bit,, we had one field which on average produce 10,000 bales,, All stacked by hand,, We now big Bale silage+hay all done by machine, never have to get off tractor.... Bliss... Great Great video... 👌👍

You do need a stacker for the hay and if I was closer I would come help you, but the baler is working really well with all the work you have done on it!

Keep up the good work, Evan. Can't wait for part II of this. If you haven't come across him already, check out Pete with "Just a Few Acres Farm." He uses older equipment on a small farmstead in New York and also has a "vintage" New Holland square baler that he covered in a recent video. His uses twine instead of wire, but still great info about how they work.

Normally I HATE travelogs, but looking over your place is a joy... and watching you jump.up and down off that trailer and stack those bales like a teenager.... well..... if you weren't in pretty good shape when.you started this adventure you are NOW !!! : ))

Instead of spreading the broken bale out and driving really slow you can throw the hay into the baler. It can go on top of the metal bars that push the hay down.

Evan my man, next time you bale build a fence along the left side of the trailer to keep the bales from falling off, you wouldn't have to get off the tractor as much. Take a 2x12 add legs and there you have the simple fence.

I used to bale kind of like you except mine went on the ground and take a truck with granny low and pick them up by my self.

You are in very good shape to be doing that one-man baling routine. I get tired just watching you work! LOL. That ol' baler seemed to perform pretty reliably this time, as you've got it down to a system and have made all the necessary adjustments and maintenance.

My hay wagons are 8 by 16. I never put over 125 on them but a lot rosier to stack and 5 across. I’ve done some baking by myself but it’s not fun.

Evan take the rake and roll that wet hay out into the sun and bale the other hay first and then bale that last.Just a suggestion I’ve learned my lesson about wet hay,you can also salt that like I think I saw you do before,anyway Good baling and God bless

I know it would cost a few bucks, but a used accumulator and a hay grapple would save you a lot of work.

I have an idea, make bail ramp long enough to reach rear of bail trailer, make it out of sections. As the back of trailer gets full, remove last section. Continue until full. I know turning corners will still be an issue as it is now anyway. Well, never mind, after watching you, you did a good job.

Your wire should be left in the box and fed through the hole in the donut of the box. Never remove your wire from the box. Also, the other reason your wire won't feed on one side is because you put the wire spool in backwards. You are most likely feeding from the wrong end of the spool.

Wait till the second part, you'll see how I screw it up. But the box doesn't fit in my baler, were the wire goes is round at the bottom, so a square box doesn't fit in there. Believe me I wish it did.

@@CountryViewAcres I ran a 216 and 224 JD baler plus an International baler that was a (POS) This was many years ago. I never even considered taking wire out of the boxes. That baler must be older than the ones I ran in the 1970s and 80s. If I were faced with running wire from an open box, I would adapt the baler to accommodate the boxes. Also, my old balers had room for 4 boxes so you could tie the wire between the boxes and if you were lucky, never miss a bale when the front boxes ran out of wire. I probably put 100,000 bales through my 224. If you could find one, it would be a good investment but for heaven's sake, stay away from the older Internationals. In my experience, it was impossible to keep them operational.

We all used bailing twhine instead of wire so cut with knife or bust open over your knee when feeding your live stock cheaper too .

When I was a kid, we used to spread rock salt between every layer of bales when stacking it in the barn. It was to prevent mold, and spontaneous combustion. Do farmers still do that?

Makes sense the rock salt will absorb moisture and lower the moisture content of the hay, the salt residue will make the cows or sheep happy and healthy.

If I lived closer I would come ride on the wagon and stack your hay but I don’t. And instead of blocking the tire pull the pin and turn left of the baler really sharp and it should swing out. Good video though

cant help you on the square baler wire problem we havent got ours out of the shed for 6 or 7 years bale everything with the round baler as Curtis said oil or grease the hitch will probably help to swing it. you might be able to add a foot or so to the hitch and then some to the ramp to raise it to get above the 1st level so you dont have to lift so high just a thought for next year ( or just find a NH stack wagon) the small ones run around 3k but my dad put up thousands of bales with his NH1030 , one man 2 bales wide 3 deep and 7 high i think back up to a set of highline poles and raise it up put up the brace poles and your stack is done till the next load

Nice video.....but please use a tad bit of oil on things.... Should be able to swing that baler over by hand ( on the level ) Can here it squawk from being rusty ! Oil the pin too ! Makes life must easier !

How many bails do you get on stacking ? We put 106 on . put one down the middle long ways , then put two long ways out from the middle . Second tyr put one long ways on out side ( pick one ) then two long ways to other side then stack the other way ( long bail opposite side ) keep going up six stacks , moving forward . that shouldd be 100 7th you can put 6 down the middle .

my wagon is only 7' x 14' and my bank barn roof is low, so only 4 bales high can fit into the barn. I wish my wagon was 8' wide. Longer would also help. This was the first year, I had ever baled Hay. So I could have stacked it better.

Why dont you use a sled behind the baler then you wouldn't have to stop every 3 or 4 bales and you'd have 6 to 8 bales together, then go round with a trailer, would make it easier when on your own

you really need to grease the swing? of the baler where it slides on the hitch part. it takes way to much effort to swing the baler to work position and back. on level ground by hand. pardon my english.. :-)

Agree. Also if you pull with the tractor headed to the left so you are just pulling the hitch around and not the baler forward helps too. Get your tractor positioned first.

1970 an old man paid me $.10 a bail to move the hay from the field to the barn.😃 it was good money 350 bales on a Saturday and he fed me lunch at his house! Good times but hard work 😓

Holy crap, I was getting paid 15 cents a bale to stack hay deliveries in 2010. That was good money then, like 30 dollars for an hour, hour and a half of hard work, can't imagine how good it was in 1970..

I noticed you were getting off tractor with PTO still running, just to be safe, I would disengage, too many horror stories with people getting tangled up with the drive shaft.

As long as the shields are in place, and you use caution, it can be safely left on. I grew up on a farm, and we never had a PTO incident.
