I came down with a cold after video, so my voice is scratchy, sorry for poor quality of the audio.

We used to have a hay bailer that had a 8hp engine. It had a big flywheel and a big flat belt that connect to the engine and the flywheel by a spring loaded idler wheel. You pulled up to the shock of hay, took a pitch fork and forked the hay into the press. There was a big iron, rooster head that would come down and push the hay into the press. They pressed hay would be pushed down the back of the bailer. You had to "block it" which means you had to push a wooden square block as the plunger would come up to push the hay down. It took some coordination to get this done. This block would separate the bails of hay. You had to put wires through holes in the bails and hand tie them. It was a lot of hot dusty work. Now we just have someone cut the hay, wind row it and round bail it in 1,200lb bails. I take the tractor with the front and real spear and pick the bails up and store them for the cattle in the winter time.

I have never seen any like it before. Very nice piece of equipment .

Wing, I usually get around 20 bales per acre per cutting. As far as goat feed, we use 1 bale every 3-4 days in the winter when there is no more grazing. Thanks for the questions and glad you liked the video!

Thanks for the video. Can you give some insight as to how many bales per acre and also, how many bales to sustain a couple of goats over the winter. I am at the age of retirement and need to make some plans for a small farm.

These are meant for 1 to 3 acres which aren't practical for a full sized rig.

I just came across your video here and was wondering if you could tell me how much each one of the bales weighs that this fancy little contraption produces. We're looking into buying some property and finding a way to bale hay into small, but manageable bales!
@helmsteadusa462010 жыл бұрын
Glad you liked the video. The bales weigh between 35-40 pounds. They are easy to manage and lift into your truck or trailer.

Is I was to cut the grass with a regular riding mower would I be able to use a hay baler like yours to bale it? Or should I use a special mechine to cut the grass?

That BCS tractor also has a sickle bar attachment that would be perfect for cutting hay without chopping it up like a brush hog or mower would do

We are considering purchase of a BCS tractor with sickle bar mower, rake and baler. We are in TX and as there is nothing like this down here we are wondering about the cost of netting and the size/weight of the bales. We have a small acreage parcel that we could use to feed our horses. Hay hereabouts is cheep but requires a $30K tractor to handle. Then there is square bales which are 3X the cost for lousy hay.
@helmsteadusa46209 жыл бұрын
Grace Wright Thanks for the comment, Grace. The netting cost about $75/roll. The baler has 3 weight settings on how heavy you want the bales to be. Ours is set on the middle setting and the bales are about 40 lbs. If you haven't already, check out the EarthtoolsKy KZfaq channel. Chris has a lot of good videos on BCS attachments. Let me know if you get the rake. I am curious about how you like it.

Is there a machine to make the windrows, or did you have to do it all by hand with a rake?
@helmsteadusa46209 жыл бұрын
I pull a hay rake behind a small tractor for the windrows. BCS does make a hay rake/tedder attachment, but I already had the old John Deere rake I am using.

Red Baron Farm The bales are 21" high and 24" in diameter.

Helmstead USA Nice! That just might work! I'll explain: I use hay mulch for vegetable farming. I found that round bales are a huge time saver in mulching large rows. Just unroll them and you have a 48 inch wide row of instant mulch hundreds of feet long. But not all rows need a full 48 inches. So to compensate I generally make double rows out of them. However, if these unroll in a similar way as the giant round bales, I think they could work where only a 2 foot wide spacing for rows of mulch are needed. Thanks so much. Bookmarking the page for sure. If I manage to get the money to buy the equipment I need, for sure this will be on the list!
