How random, was just looking this up and figured I wouldn't really be able to find much info... then I clicked on this and was pleasantly surprised. Thanks, cheers 🍻

I was researching bushing recently, and from your video I learned that there are different types of bushing. Not many people are talking about it so thanks for the valuable video and your thoughts

Awesome video. Somehow this video didn’t pop up the first time I searched about bushings. I too thought the bushing rotating around the pivots before this. Thank you

Nice explanation. You got everything right, and I like how you covered the super basic stuff like what the outer diameter means. A lot of technical people struggle to connect that stuff because they forget its not common knowledge. Satisfying sound is determined by how well handles and blade transmit sound between each other. Most important tolerance for that is the diameter of the hole in the blade to the OD of the bushing, and then next is the tune on the bushing. Zen pin material & fit is also very important , but that's mostly on the makers and usually not an issue.

Ooooh never thought about the contact between the od of the bushing and the blade hole affecting the sound. Thx for all the comments!

Glad you liked it! It’s not super complex, but after hearing too many ppl say they’re for “dissipating friction” I had clear it up lol

14:43 That sound is caused by vibration. Metal is an element that’s quite easy to get in vibration because of there structure. All metals have a different frequency depending on there density, the mass and form of that object. There usually two kinds of sounds produced by the vibration for once the air that get moved from the vibration alone and second the sound that comes from metal touching and rubbing against each other because of the vibration. Cutouts effect that sound because the change the overall mass of that object and also direct how the air that carries the sound waves can move. Tolerances in the pivot effect that sound as well because they control how much space is to vibrate. High tolerances should cause an shorter and deeper sound while tight tolerances case an higher and longer ring. Just a guess but that’s probably why it is called tuning to size the bushings and remove play like instruments or tuning forks get tuned.

Interesting point about the oil in a floating washer system. I think the main advantage of a floating washer system is that you can sand down the washers if you accidentally undersize the bushing. So you can’t mess up when you’re tuning a bushing. However, I’ve had real problems tuning floating washer systems. I always get one handle that ends up stuttering. I think it’s because the shitty clone washers have a burr on one side (or bent washers). Because, with a floating washer system, you have friction on both sides of the washer.
@alecgross12
@alecgross12 4 ай бұрын
Yeah that’s another possible advantage… but you could start to run into an issue where the bushing isn’t the same size as the zen pins, in which case the handles won’t be parallel and they’ll push against the washers. That might be what’s happening with your “stuttering”

@@alecgross12 right! The only Balis I have owned with floating washers were pinsless though (TheOne G10 Orca and TheOne Nami). However, I was still worried that I went too small with the bushings. The handle flanges may not have been parallel enough when the screws were tightened. Idk though, TheOne G10 Orca was stuttery out of the box! So I think it was shitty washers. Plus, a G10 handle moving against a bronze washer seems like a terrible design. So I sold that one. Moral of the story is that floating washers are a bitch to tune lol. I tried reaching out to a few professional modders about tuning my TheOne Nami. They said they can’t guarantee a great tune even if I give them extra hardware. So I’ve been trying to live with a bali that has a small amount of tap :(

What is the difference between bushings pivot system and regular washer pivot system?? 🤔
@alecgross12
@alecgross12 Ай бұрын
@@-p0op0o regular washer pivot system has no bushing, so the washers are right up against the blade. If you tighten the handles down they don’t swing. They have to be loose and held in place with thread lock or teflon tape

10:22 You are saying that the washers are getting thinner in two ways, one is by getting compressed this one is clear, but then you say that the second reason is that the washer is getting shaved off because of the friction with the blade, but we know even you said it earlier that they dont contact because the bushing is holding it away from the blade. So am I right and the second statement is not correct or I just dont get something?
@alecgross12
@alecgross12 Жыл бұрын
Hmmm… good question. My understanding is that the bushing separates the washers from each other, but not from the blade. The blade actually slides up and down the bushing and is usually making contact with one or the other of the washers. The washers are actually what prevents the blade from hitting the inside of the handles, right? So the bushing holds the washers at a fixed distance very close to the blade, but the bushing itself doesn’t prevent blade play - the washers do. Does that kinda make sense?
@alecgross12
@alecgross12 Жыл бұрын
In other words, if the washers are too loose (far from the blade, oversized bushings), the blade can wiggle back and forth and hit the insides of the handles. If the washers are too tight (rubbing hard against the blade, undersized bushings) they prevent swing. So the bushing holds the washers in the sweet spot where there’s not too much friction between the washers and the blade to prevent swing - but there’s still enough friction to prevent play.

I think the sound has a lot to do with cutouts in handes and how tight/loose the zen pins are. I think the cutouts determine the ring of a knife and then zens determine the bounce, but I’m also no expert lmao

So does that mean if my Balisong was perfectly tuned when it arrived and gets play and tap after flipping it for a while, if I can’t get it back to no tap and no play, I just need to replace the washers?
