Here are the five current balisongs in my collection, along with how they work, a bit of history, and how each of these three manufacturers approaches the design. If you don't own a bali, get a trainer and learn. You may want to put all of your current "fidget toys" aside!
Enjoy, Like & Subscribe! Thanks!

I recently ordered a Lucha as a first Balisong. I always grew up recognizing the name Kershaw with quality, and it’s so fucking cool that the same company that made my first pocket knife as a kid made my first Balisong at 28 y/o.

Good morning, Sir. This is a great collection. I’ve only ever had one balisong, a Spyderco Spyderfly. Someone offered me a ridiculous sum for it so it went home with them. I enjoy watching others flip them around but I got tired of bleeding so I’ve not purchased another. 😶‍🌫️

Get a trainer, or simply tape over the edge with electrical tape, leaving a bubble on the edge as a bumper. Done this many times over the years with success. When you think about it, The balisong has the strongest lockup of any folding knife! 🗡️👍😁

I've never really been interested in balisongs, but being a huge Maxace fan, I've kinda been looking at them a little closer the last year or so. I imagine I'll have a handful of them this time next year, I've just accepted that's how this hobby plays out. Another great video! Unrelated to the video, but because youve featured a quite a few Maxace models, have you seen the Stedemon Frida? It has a few issues, but it has probably the best grind of any production knife I've ever handled. Ive had 2 of them, and one was .011" behind the edge, and the other is .008". It basically feels like a deep hollow zero grind. Stedemon is the parent company of Maxace and NOC and probably quite a few others, in case anyone reading this is wondering how Stedemon is realated to Maxace. Again, great video!

Many thanks for watching, and your comments! Yes, I'm aware of the Maxace-Stedemon-Noc connection and have knives from each. I'd like to check out the Frida, but it's been elusive, being out of stock at WMK. Check this channel for reviews on Noc and Stedemon. As for the balisong, definitely check out the Boker large (link in description) 🗡️👍😁

@ninja I have both the trainer and the live blade in the Lucha. In measuring the blade stock they are both 4 mm at the tang. However, as you indicate, the blade thins out more on the live blade where the edge is ground than on the trainer, which is thicker with no edge or point for safety. By dropping the trainer the number of times you mention it's likely that the blade may have become bent or misaligned, thus the scraping you encountered against the handle. The handle slot width is 4.8 mm on both the trainer and the live blade, so no difference there. Actually the trainer probably saved you damage that would have occurred on the live blade, possibly to the point and the edge, so you could say the trainer is a good option. Depending upon the surface you dropped it on, the bearings that it pivots on may not have been designed for that kind of abuse. Washers can take more abuse. Of course I have no way of telling what actually happened to cause your problem. Best thing would be to get in touch with Kershaw and see what they can do for you. 🗡️👍🗡️

@OGBladeReviews
@OGBladeReviews 2 жыл бұрын
Personally in use I like the Boker for it's fast action and maneuvering. Just seems that I can manipulate it with great ease, even with it's washer based pivot. The Lucha is a great balisong, on bearings, but a bit large for really doing a lot of different techniques for me. Also the handles are a bit more squared off than the Boker. Hope this helps. Thanks for watching! 👍🗡️😁

I’m torn between the Lucha and the Bradley. Which one would you think is more durable.
@OGBladeReviews
@OGBladeReviews 2 жыл бұрын
The Bradley's going to feel heavier, Even though it's shorter. If you don't mind a longer knife that's not as quick to manipulate, the Lucha is the way to go. The way it's constructed, and on bearings, I feel it will be easier to maintain in the long run. Right now my favorite of this bunch is the Boker. This has been my experience, anyway. 🗡️👍

@alanshaw6161

So with the Lucha is it possible to convert it to the Manila style by taking out the pivot bolts and just flipping the blade the opposite way so when you reinstall it the safe handle becomes the one with the latch? I didn’t know there were two styles and I guess I always ran into the Manila style.
@OGBladeReviews
@OGBladeReviews Жыл бұрын
Good question! The latch is pinned to one handle of the knife with drift pins and these holes are not on the other handle. However, It would be easy to detach the handles from the blade and simply spin the blade around so it faces the other way. 👍🗡️👊

I have a Kershaw Moonsault that I juat received and would like getting another Balisong. I'm not a flipper, I use primarily for PPC (personal protection carry). So which of these would you recommend for that specific carry. My openings remain basic, like one flip or rollovers, weight isn’t really a concern as my Moonsault doesn't bother me.
@OGBladeReviews
@OGBladeReviews 7 ай бұрын
Probably the Kershaw, particularly since you don't flip it alot. It's larger and heavier intends to bang up your hand a lot if you flip it heavily, but as a defense knife it has the reach and piercing ability that you would look for in such a knife...
@Prizrak-hv6qk
@Prizrak-hv6qk 13 күн бұрын
The Kershaw Moonsault is a mean blade and built like a tank, and is a good defensive carry bali. However, you really need to know a good deal of moves when it comes to wielding them and have these move ingrained in your muscle memory, so that you can do these moves without even thinking about it. Otherwise, you'll just end up hurting yourself if (god forbid) you'll ever have to use the knife for personal defense. I've been learning and training with balis for six months now, focusing on practical moves only, but am only now beginning to consider carrying one as a weak hand backup "tool". BTW, I'd never trust my Boker bali (too many issues) and that Bradley has some spotty reviews too.

@@AbuFareedAliSabir I see. I think that if I carried a knife as my primary means of self defense, I'd go with a fixed blade. If you're still looking on recommendations for balisongs, check out MaxAce's models. That Chinese company makes some really nice quality bushing pivoting, spring loaded latch balisongs for very reasonable prices. My first decent balisong was a MaxAce Hellcat and I still really like it. It pisses me off that my premium (20CV/CF) version of Kershaw Lucha doesn't have a decent latch like the MaxAce knives do. Lucha's latch just flops around, damages the titanium liner and even gets in the way of some openings.

Interesting stuff...👍 "Another claim is that balisong were originally an adaptation of a French measuring tool called the pied du roi ("foot of the king"), invented between the 1500s to the late 1700s. ... In contrast, the French pied du roi was primarily a folding ruler, with the knife only included in some specimens as a novelty." en.m.wikipedia.org › wiki

Sorry, but I have used and practiced w/ Balisongs for years and this is a beautiful knife but after just a couple of days of manipulating it it wouldn't stay closed and the scales loosened up and it got sloppy. My Benchmade is still tight after years of use. Don't get me wrong, I own several Bokers and I love them and I was initially impressed by this knife but I should be able to manipulate/open/close/flip it without it going gunny-bag in a couple of days. Maybe they need to publish directions for maintenance? I am going to modify it with larger hinge screws and reduce the spring rate of the latch and increase/grind the indentation for the latch area so it will once again lock closed. I am very disappointed in this knife. Flipped it for a couple of days and it shit-the-bed on me. It didn't hold up as long as a cheap Chinese import.
