Hi Gary. Thanks for the tips with the electric toothbrush and the vaseline. I always used thinner to rub off the enamel colour on my rail tops. This is very time consuming. But smearing a bit of vaseline on before painting it should be much easier to remove. Guido

Iam glad you showed two methods one with and without using a airbrush as many dont have access to or feel confident enough to use one. must say both ways came out looking great mate. i was very impressed with your weathering powders method I've not used them in the pas think Think Iam going need to brush up one my powdering skills got lots of rolling stock to do at some point lol. I used a woodland scenic's paint pen thingy to do my rails then went over it all with a can of Humbrol sleeper grim the only thing with the humbrol spray can is you can not control the direction very well I Dont think it came out to bad in the end. Very interesting on how ballast is applied. I cheated an bought a kit to slide along and feed ballast. Still had to use dry brush to do final trim. Colour ballast was a mixture of dark and light brown. Happy as it was first go. Next step rust treatment, but that's another day. Great video Gary, will keep watching for more ideas.

The vibrating toothbrush is a great idea for settling the stray ballast, thanks. How about painting the sides of the rail with your airbrush before you ballast? It's much faster than hand painting with a brush (you can fly with the airbrush), and you don't run the risk of getting patches of the rail-brown paint on your ballast.

Hi Gary, that was a great how to and it looked fantastic, I don't have a airbrush I have been thinking of getting one but there are things on my list that come first. How ever I have rusted all the sides of my track with a paint brush and done all the sleeper and it does look effective, I have not done any ballasting yet, and after watching you do it with the powders and what a great job you have done I will get some powders and have a go when I do the ballasting, that's what I like about your video's they are always interesting and you always learn something from them. Thanks for a very interesting video, could you just tell me the powder colours again because my earing is not great and I could not catch what colours they were. Thanks again for sharing. I prefer to weather track with diluted brush washes followed by dry brushing. Doesn't look too uniform then as airbrushing often does. I have an air brush but reserve it for locomotives. By the time I set it up then cleaned it after use (full strip - always - no exceptions) I could have finished a section or two with a brush so no point for me! Interesting vid though. Vaseline and vibrating brush was a good couple of nuggets. :)

Garry, thanks for that tutorial, as I’ve said before, I just need to bite the bullet and start experimenting with these powders. When you first applied the red oxide I thought ‘oh no’ but with the additional application of black to blend it in the results are very good. I had it in my head that powders were used dry but with the addition of water it’s really just producing a paint to your own colour palette and is probably much easier to work with. Now, where did I put that test piece of track? Paul

Air brush is the way to go! Thank you Garry. For idiots and heavy handed people like me this how to is very informative. It really does transform the ballast work. Gary do find you get bits of ballast in your teeth when you put the brush back in the bathroom 😉.... just kidding . I use my tooth brush to polish the bike chain 😱..... all joking aside good vid ....regards Fred

Why would you paint the track after ballasting? You should always ballast after weathering the track.
