Conclusion: Josephine is too busy admiring feet to catch mistakes. No but really, most of these dancer just know how to cover up well or the slip up was just not that bad

Years ago, I was a performer at a "Victorian banquet" dinner theatre, in the basement of an old building with stone floors. One summer night, the humidity was so bad that it caused condensation on the floor. During my big number, I did a high-kick, and felt my supporting leg slide out from under me. The audience gasped, as down I went, landing in a perfect jazz-split, with my arms raised in triumph. Adrenaline!!!

LOL reminds me of that time I slipped on the wet hallway way back in middle school (it was snowing outside and everyone was just getting to school) and a teacher standing in her doorway gasped as down i went, landing in the splits. Thank goodness for stretch fabric! Also, yes it did hurt (not warmed up and nothing like slamming your crotch on a tile floor first thing in the morning 💀). But I just said "i'm fine, I meant to do that." got up and walked to my locker 😂

I remember showing this one to my daughter about how to just make a mistake on stage, proceed with confidence, and it's OK. She's a singer not a dancer but realistically if it doesn't show on your face very few people will really be sure you messed up and even fewer will remember if you nail the ending.

Honestly, one of the things I've loved about watching professional dance but ballet especially is how well they tie in mistakes/falls into the choreography. It's like nothing happened and one of my favorite shows was when a dancer did slip (she was fine!) because she made it look so seamless and beautiful, it's something I've never forgotten. Very inspiring stuff here!

Gotta admit, I just about had a heart attack at the same time Josephine almost fell out of her chair when Giselle is dancing among the Wilis in Act II. That fall was surprising. 3:12

Someone once told me about a dancer whose costume accessory started falling off during a performance. She tossed it around like a ribbon prop for the rest of the performance and wrapped it around her head at the finale of her dance. The only audience members who noticed it as improv, knew it wasn't a part of her routine. Nobody else knew.

Agree with Josephine that almost all of these were too smooth for anyone but a professional to really catch (we had the useful red circle being the video callout LOL). Non sequitur: I'd love to see Josephine do a fitting for Precious Adams!

I’ve done both dance and theatre. Although I don’t remember making a big mistake in dance I did in theatre. For a scene I had to run around someone, hiding that I was there while something was in my pocket. One time the object fell out. So I ran back to get it. Okay not bad. Then I slipped out of one of my shoes since I was wearing tights. Okay you can still recover. But then I slipped out my other shoe. I just grabbed the object and my shoes and tried to continue going with the scene. But then I slipped while trying to walk because of the tights on the floor. I just acted like it didn’t happen and continue on with my scene trying to put my shoes on. Dance DEFINITELY prepared me for that situation.

A couple years ago when i was 11, I was performing as clara in the nutcracker. We had one scene where we were supposed to run through a bunch of children dancing around. I completely spaced and started running 30 seconds too soon and the nutcracker (who was like 16 and 2 ft taller) just picked me up and set me back down next to her with a little head shake. smooth recovery

One time when i started ballet ( so when I was 4 or so) we had a show and we were little sheeps. But nobody told us where we should go after the performance 😂 so imagine 10 little kids walking through the audience in sheep costumes and some adult running later after us bringing us behind the stage😂

we NEED these fail videos for every dancer who just fell and is standing backstage with tears in their eyes. you gotta grab them, give them your best everybody falls, in the tune of everybody hurts and give them a hug afterwards.

I plan contingency into my recital pieces. If you all get overly excited wind up at the end too early, keep doing (insert step). We also practice falling and recovery and I teach them this is totally normal to make mistakes so we learn how to mess up gracefully.

I love your reactions and videos, in large part because of your open heart, genuine responses, and level headed solutions, and I love THIS reaction because of how well it focuses on how none of us are (or can be) perfect, and how what matters is not the small mistakes we'll (all) make, but how we manage them, how we recover from them, AND how we relate to errors in both ourselves and others. Kindness, positive view, and realistic expectations. Yes, please!

Those are definitely how-to react when there’s a mistake. Not a dancer, but an Lyra aerialist for a small, local cirque troop. We were doing a show and part of my routine involved balancing on my toes on the bottom of the hoop while in a transition from the a top of the hoop movie. I somehow managed to miss the bar, and was essentially free-falling, grabbed the span set that the hoop is attached to, swung my legs back around and rolled back into the hoop. Finished the routine, but my heart was pounding. The only way to know that it was a completely screw up was the gasp my safety spotter let out. She said the audience had no clue that that wasn’t supposed to happen and could have broke my back or neck that day.

a couple years ago was watching the SF Ballet Nutcracker and the Sugar Plum Fairy straight up fell on her bum at the end of her number just before she left the stage. on her next dance the entire audience clapped... it was so cute, the whole theatre was like, "no worries girl we've got you" that's what it felt like anyway.

i kinda love when things go wrong in professional theatre, i love seeing how the pros deal with unexpected situations mid performance. of course not when someone gets hurt or indecently exposed because their clothes broke. but situations where a prop doesn't get cleared away in time or a minor wardrobe mishap like someones fly being open or someone loosing a ribbon or a shoe or something

If I may say, remember that most of the audience are total amateurs (like me) who simply enjoy watching ballet for the beauty, not the skill. I do appreciate the skill, but understand there’s no such thing as perfection. I also appreciate a good blooper. So, if someone slips, then I’ve seen another wonderful person and performance!! 😊

I once saw Carlos Acosta (I think in Don Quixote) doing barrel turns right around the stage and the final leap was the worst mess! He came perilously close to the front of the stage so maybe he did one too many and tried to stop himself, but his momentum was too much and he landed like a sack of spuds. The collective gasp from the audience was such that I'm surprised the Opera House auditorium didn't implode. Fortunately, being Carlos, he bounced straight up and carried on with a huge grin as the audience switched from dread to rapturous applause.

And it was in a real auditorium with a real stage so there are about 10 photos of me walking, squatting like I am going to jump, and then a teenager who used to babysit me at the edge of the stage trying to convince me to go back to the line of little girls, and me trying to get her to pick me up. All while in a white sequined, fringed costume with the fake gloves (no hands but a loop to go around the finger), and a feather in my hair.
