The way I explain corps work to my students is this: We cannot be the same person, physically. BUT. We can put in the work to convince the AUDIENCE we are the same person. That means that if you have longer legs, what may be a short step for you will be a long step for someone else, and you must take the same step regardless.

A little anecdote from the Royal Danish Ballet: Told by my biology professor. He used to teach at the officers academy of the Danish Army.. An officer has to be capable of representing, and of course he has to be able to dance. Therefore they have dance lessons at the academy. Someone had the idea to invite the ladies from The Royal Dansh Ballet to participate, as there were no female cadets at that time, and it was assumed, that they were very capable of dancing. It all went very well, and the dance lessons were an absolute success. There was however a slight problem: When you combine a lot of elegant and beautiful young ladies with a lot of goodlooking and elegant cadets, the result is of course, that you end up with a lot of them marrying each other. That is not bad at all, but it resulted in a lot of the ladies getting pregnant at the same time, and The Royal Danish Ballet was unable to cast White Acts for quite some time, and had to change the repetoire for a whole year. One can imagine La Bayadere with 5 or 6 shadows. That would not have worked at all..

Two weeks ago I have seen this amaizing ballet, and that entrance of the shadows and the whole white act are just amaizing. My daughter dance that first part at her school festival but she only realised how great that piece is when she saw it as public. Beautiful hard piece of classical ballet.

I feel the theory that the ( gorgeous amazing) Shades are all the multiple 'reflections ' of Nikaya. It does make complete sense as Solor is supposed to be in a drug induced frame of mind. Love the Kingdom of the Shades act. But it is sad that most companies finish the Ballet after Shades and don't perform the last wedding / destruction finale act. Fortunately I have managed to see ( on You Tube only) the full 3 acts of this beautiful Ballet. Would love to see it all on stage

I’m not a ballet nerd. I never did dance. With all that said, this video was awesome for someone as dance-illiterate as me. The harp solo was lovely. The musicians were probably counting rests for the harp solo. I used to play the violin and I was terrible at counting rests. 😅

I was so lucky to see the Kirov (Mariinsky) perform the whole ballet many years ago at the London Coliseum. My mum found the parrots in the wedding scene somewhat amusing, but the Kingdom of the Shades brought tears to my eyes (tbh it always does, that first entrance...sigh....) If you feel so inclined, do look at the Royal Ballet rehearsal of this scene they did for World Ballet Day a few years back, rehearsed by Samantha Raine - "Be proud, ladies" yes, that made me cry too. PS I absolutely love Minkus' music xxxx

Mariinsky's production of La Bayadere is beautiful. Samantha's rehearsal was so lovely, she puts a big emphasis on the mental strength of the dancers in addition to the physical work ❤️

Last year my ballet teacher made us ( amateur advanced adult class !! ) work on this full part at the end of class for 2 MONTHS straight. It was indeed excrutiating but it made us stronger and improved our spacial awareness by at least 300%. Just the entrance by itself is a very good exercise if you need to work on your coordination as a group, which is sometimes hard if you go to adult ballet classes, where you will find people who were never taught spacial awareness, let alone how to position yourself in a ballet class setting.

I’ve done my countless number of Kingdom of the Shades. I started in the middle towards the front and then went to be 1st Shade. It doesn’t matter where you are. What sort of sick sorcery did Petipa come up with? We got the ramp, in many of my cases, arabesques ad infinitum on a raked stage and then a full adagio WITHOUT a partner?!?! There’s a sense of community in collective suffering 😂 I definitely knew my number of arabesques and did them all on the other side. The joy of the run and four count collective exhale… We did it very often in galas and special events so I learned to love it till this day. The arabesques were set by the most flexible girls. I didn’t mind at all. If someone was slacking off - immediately relegated to the back = Siberia ! That’s the Russian way. 14:26

So yes please: more of those videos - i think with our focus on stars we often forget the immense role the corps de ballet plays, and the hard work it takes to produce such dreamlike, beautiful performances! I love La Bayadere, and have seen the ABT production (Makarova's production) maybe 20 times over their seasons. As Solor is in a drug-induced sleep, the shades represent Nikya magnified with each girl in his mind - this is how I learned the interpretation. Also the corps, in their synchronicity, represents the beauty of unity. The Entrance of the Shades scene is so spectacular and the applause is well-deserved.

I love ballet but am more of a musician, the shades have always been one of my favorite orchestral excerpts to play on both of my instruments, including as a final flute exam years ago, as hard as it it for dancers, it's surprisingly hard for the musicians as well ^^ this is basically a beautiful torture for everyone involved^^

So glad I found this channel! I thought I was the only nerd loving the repetitive nature of this particular piece. Well, I found my crowd! This was my night routine here in my kitchen, socks and all ( no tutu and pointe shoes), just going around my large table, during the first year of covid-19 pandemic. I rehearsed it with the Royal Ballet video on YT. Strenuous but so soul lifting.

Omg Shades terrify me so much. Their entrance alone is just so mesmerizing yet physically demanding at the same time. Also I feel like it's one of the white acts that sometimes gets missed when people mention white acts. They usually go towards Swan Lake or Giselle or even sometimes Snow from Nutcracker but they never mention Shades.

Russian ballet at the finest. I love Bournonville, but Pepita has his moments too, and this is EXCUISITE :) As expected from Mariinsky and also from Bolshoi. They have a tradition to live up to - and they do!

I am very glad you explained it so well, and in pitiless detail, because it has given me even more appreciation for how difficult this art form is! Your similar outfits look like they go well together. Thank you for featuring this! I share your nostalgia too - I performed in this for the showcase at the end of my first summer intensive and it was glorious but also the most challenging thing I had done as a ballet dancer to date (and probably ever, actually). The part I dreaded the most though was actually the moment where we get into the tendu croisé before the line-by-line bourrées to the back. If you’re in the front row and you have to hold that tendu plié position for three bars before you can actually join the rest of the corps in the bourée, those twelve counts are an eternity! The entrance is hard but you can get your mind into a flow state when you’re moving with the music and the other dancers. The stillness in a held position after all that exertion though is KIlLER. All the cramps start to flood in (and my feet cramped like crazy from trying to point them so hard in every arabesque) but you can’t budge an inch. My favorite part was the melty plié into the bourées after that - then I knew the finish line was in sight. And going back en pointe after all of the work standing with legs en l’air feels so good because you can kind of subtly sink into your shoe and the bourées shake your feet out a little. Heavenly.

My ballet teacher danced as one of the shades in this act and on top of everything her costume was just a bit too small and it almost slipped (it would have revealed her chest completely). Happily that didn't happen!

I agree the Willis. I always think The Shades and the Willis pair as the most ballet of ballet pieces. Tutus, ballerinas, arabesques and flower coronets! They are the epitome of the dreams of what we think ballet dancing is as we solemnly practised our early steps. So lovely to hear this professional viewpoint. ❤

The Nutcracker at the Marrinsky Theater in 2016. It was one the most magical nights of my life. The theatre itself is breathtaking and then to watch such beautiful dancers. I cried my eyes out, particularly during the pas de deux. It was sublime.

When the Paris Opera Ballet performed Swan Lake in the square court of Le Louvre in July 1976 (Bourmeister choreography, the best ever), there were 32 swans on stage + 4 little swans + 3 senior swans + Odette, that made 40 swans, it was gorgeous !!!

Many many years ago I got to see Paris Opera Ballet perform the Kingdom of the Shades Act. I was up a level from the orchestra seats which was the perfect vantage point to see the perfect formations. And the music is so beautiful. The experience was sublime. 🥰🥰🥰

I'm dancing a Willi in Giselle right now, which is incredibly grueling in and of itself. But, I could not imagine how much more difficult this piece is! Giselle takes so much out of me, I could never.

This is my just personal taste in music and performing arts in general, but the highlight for me is never the amazing solo but the mesmerizing and glorious harmonies and synchronization. So give me choral and orchestral music over sonatas, give me corps work over variations. Like I skip the Odile solo in swan lake and rose adagio in sleeping beauty lol.

2 weeks ago, we performed a part of raymonda and a part of la bayadere, in the same show. We did the entrance of shades at the very end of the show, it's so so tiring because normally, you would have different steps during a piece where you would be able to kind of rest but with shades, it's impossible. For more than 5 minutes you keep doing the same thing over and over again. I don't even want to remember. Edit: I want to add, we are not professional dancers nor pre-pros, all of us are hobby dancers and I started ballet just last year.

I really loved how you explained the story of Giselle, and the breakdown of the Swan Lake pdd made me notice so many new details I had never thought about. I was bopping with you with the video about classical music bops; I am now obviously a subscriber for life :) Little constructive criticism nobody asked me for: A couple of videos had the volume levels a bit lower than others, I had to keep adjusting the volume on my TV during my binge. Kingdom of the shades is one of the best parts of La Bayadere. I like the last act of the ballet very much. I like all Minkus's ballet very much too. The music is so nice (the story very sad). Why are the saddest parts of ballets always so beautiful (last act of La Bayadere, 2. act of Giselle). Always after death of main character. I don't like sad stories in general, but those two ballets I could watch non stop?

Mariinsky girls are changing the arabesque leg when the direction changes(for the left to right direction the left leg arabesque is facing the audience and for the right to left direction, the right leg is facing the audience) ...in Paris each dancer execute all 39 arabesques with the same leg, but the girls alternate the leg, one girl left arabesque, followed by the next one right arabesque

This one, from Marinsky, is the bet I have ever seen. I do love Sarafanov, he’s brilliant. But, enormous credit must be given to the Corps de Ballet. They are superb. A good corps de ballet is the backbone of any good ballet company and these do Marinsky proud. It is just superb 🩰🩰🩰🩰🙏🙏👵🇦🇺

But it does change sides on the arabesque depending on which direction you're going. When going stage left, it's the right arabesque. Go stage right and it's left arabesque.

That film of the Mariinsky was as close to perfect as I've seen. I've always thought it was unfair that the audience gets a minute to applaud but the poor Shades don't get to take a bow for all that beautiful hard work! Since Jordan has danced it, can I ask this? I swear as I've watched different companies rehearse or perform this, the Shades get little tweaks depending on the company. Like, the Royal looked like they were always using the upstage leg as their standing leg. And I think I've seen ABT alternate so every other Shade was doing 1st vs 2nd arabesque. The Mariinsky Shades here look like they're stepping onto the upstage leg till they get off the ramp, then get to alternate 1st/2nd, and I think the individual dancers get to alternate 1st/2nd {I hope that made sense}. I remember reading the book Dance as Life many years ago and when ABT was just staging the Shades scene, the critics calling it "Makarova's Miracle" because she finally got ABT's Corps to work together. The author quoted her as calling one of the Corps dancers for "wubbling" in arabesque! Really enjoyed this video. So simple yet so gorgeous when done well!

Good question. Each production does it a little differently. For the most part, the first shade does all the arabesques on the right leg, the second does all of them on the left leg, the third uses the right leg, etc etc. Sometimes they all step on the downstage leg while descending the ramp and then switch to the alternating “right/left” dancers on the floor, some begin that way from the start. Either way, more often than not, each individual will be doing a majority of the arabesques on same leg, whether it be right or left... but it depends 😅😅 School productions will sometimes add an extra step before the arabesque so that each dancer performs equal arabesques on both legs so that they’re more even, so that’s another option lol Hope that helps and makes sense 😂😂

@@balletreign I was trying to remember about the right/left balance of arabesques from when I did this corps de ballet part (plus the next sections on the sides with the solos and interludes) at the a ballet summer program performance many years ago. We did the ABT version because our teacher had danced there. I think we alternated legs for the procession which was helpful for the back. I loved the whole adagio section in the six lines (we had 24 dancers). I was in the front on stage right, especially the first développé, the bourreés back, even just standing doing the port de bras.

In addition to the abovementioned choreographic variety in alternating vs unison penchés, variety also abounds in how many ramps are used (Bolshoi performs with FOUR ramps -- just imagine the added complication of all those 45 degree angle turns at the start of each ramp! - whilst Paris uses only one ramp). Likewise, some companies enter the ramp sequence in high fifth arms, and others start their ballerinas in high fourth, or even just uncomplicated first position. For the resultant visual effect on the audience, we find that 39 repetitions of the same step-sequence can drift dangerously close to monotony (albeit that a sense of opium-induced hallucination and its accompanied stretch of time-perception is the whole point of the Kingdom of the Shades), so we welcome any chance to add variety to the choreography. Thus, we find that the Bolshoi version is just so thrilling to watch, but must be a battle of the nerves to dance! As you two so rightly state, The Kingdom of the Shades is one of the highlights in all of Petipa's output -- and the full-length ballet into which it is set is also a very great creation. watching stuff like this makes me wonder a little bit why people always want to be promoted. I know that may sound weird. But the lack of cohesiveness and teamwork as a soloist or principal literally seems less rewarding. Even Megan Fairchild at NYCB said this. The level of concentration is at the top level. It's so astounding to achieve something like this, knowing you literally can't be the one person who misses a step or you break the forth wall almost.
