I know the scene is a little problematic for a few reasons, but I just really like how Ben and Johnny are still close, that they were still happy to see each other. Even to the point of Johnny being a little bit flirty with Ben, there. And Johnny's look of happy delight, seeing that Ben got married, was quite lovely (and a nice pay-off, given the message he sent Ben, all those years ago, telling him to be himself because life's too short otherwise. Ben got the message).

Was nice to see Callum being called Halfway again. It's like at times they retconned that part of him away. Was nice to have it referenced. Glad Johnny has a spine now too. Always thought Ted Reiley was a weak, meek johnny. This one has some presence.

Ted's version of Johnny in fairness was an unsure teenager at the time, lots of lads that age can go through social anxiety or have trouble standing up for themselves. And Strike's predecessing Johnny, while sometimes more cocky or outspoken, was still not exactly a risk-taker or a fighter, and had a blushing shy side. It felt believable enough to me.

It's weird that it seems like no-one's mentioned that to Johnny, and he's just expected to know or intuit it. He's gay and clever, yes, he can't read minds though.

Either Johnny's completely in the dark about the kind of man Ben's become in the last several years and hasn't bothered to get details and ask questions (like a lawyer would), or he's aware and despite how bad it all is he doesn't care because Ben's his old mate & lover and he's missed him so much. The hopeful flirting indicates the second.

Happy for everyone who likes this and finds it a good resolution, but sorry to moan, for me this outcome is massively disappointing. Context: I'm a former viewer from the 2000s-2010s (stopped watching c.2017) who really liked and responded to Ben/Johnny as teens, as I am about their age and gay too. Some silly nostalgic part of me always hoped they'd be eventual endgame, or find their way back together, even platonically. Now, Ben's character has been ruined beyond repair, shot past the moral event horizon, and the interesting potential of him ever reconnecting with Johnny on any intimate meaningful is dead in the water, so this scene and s/l really feels like two fingers up to people like me. EE were on the brink of bringing prodigal fans back into the fold after all these years with a Johnny return and a Ben redraw, but sadly there's no way back from this point now. It's a pity. Plus with respect to Bowden & Clay and all their hard work, personally I didn't ever connect with Ballum after that took off, and just 'got' and preferred Ben 5.0/Harry Reid more, so unless Reid returns and Ben is reset to that there's nothing the writers' room can do to rehab him in my eyes. All the best to the new actors and the departing ones, anyway, no hard feelings toward them whatsoever (it's just a gig and a wage to them, they don't write or plot the nonsense).

It's kind of sad that Ben's leaving for years and Johnny even here shows little interest in him, when they were literally first designed as endgame love interests for each other. I get that Life happens and retcons happen and EE isn't known for neat happy endings, but still it's a pity that this obvious destined couple ended up as...friendly acquaintances and former neighbours who once had a one night stand. I suppose it's realistic in a gritty missed connections kind of way, so there's that.

I would love Callum and Johnny being a couple. A much more realistic and better couple than Bena and Callum.

the first johnny was better than the 2nd one but even his johnny was not that memorable, maybe it just the character is not really a stand out character, I kind think he was the weakest of the carters tbh.

Strike was beautiful, charming, cocky and savvy but with a sweet and sensitive and bookish side, too. He made perfect sense as Danny Dyer's studious but cheeky gay son, and it made sense that he'd be a closet key for someone like Ben. Neither of the other recasts have felt 'right' in those respects, though both lads are capable actors.
