“Dedicated to the indomitable spirit of the *sled dogs* that relayed antitoxin six hundred miles over rough ice, across treacherous waters, through Arctic blizzards from Nenana to the relief of stricken Nome in the Winter of 1925. Endurance · Fidelity · Intelligence”. Thank you Togo for traveling hundreds of miles through dangerous terrains to get that medicine, and thank you Balto for delivering the medicine when Togo was too weak to do it, if not, those kids would’ve been lost without you... and Togo.

Why is no one talking about how all of the sled dogs are idolizing Balto with complete sincerity at the end of this video after he saved the medicine, and how he was so humble about it? I thought that was a great contrast to their "idolization" of Steele and his reaction to it.

"Whether the White Wolf is Balto's father or some kind of ephemeral Spirit of the Wolf is deliberately unstated. The White Wolf Sequence is still my favorite part of the movie, and James Horner's extraordinary score that accompanies it still raises the hairs on the back of my neck. We wanted to keep it mystical and vague - is this a real event or is it some kind of hallucination that Balto is experiencing? All of these were reasons to not have the White Wolf speak or in any way explain himself. Perhaps the Wolf is a manifestation of Balto's inner voice, telling him to take ownership and use that part of him that he has always been ashamed of - certainly that is the message Balto takes from the encounter, real or not (and by the way, if it was really his dad why didn't the old man help him drag the antitoxin up the cliff?" :- Simon Wells (Director of Balto)

@@emilycarrick3570 oh my I also always thought it was Balto's mom even before I watched the sequel
@solirablack59342 жыл бұрын
@@emilycarrick3570 Absolutely agree with you. That is the true canon, the canon of the original film - Balto's father is a wolf, Balto's mom is a husky, which is logical, plausible and perfectly works (and explains, why Balto lives in Nome among humans and dogs and doesn't want to leave it, wants to be a dog and is ashamed of his wolf heritage, and how humans and dogs can know about his mixed lienage), while the White Wolf is a male and the symbol of Balto's wolf half (i.e. Balto's true self) and self-acceptance. That's why the white wolf scene is a masterpiece - it's about inner fight, overcoming inner conflicts, pain and fears, the battle with yourself in your heart AND discovering/realizing the nobility and purity of own soul. That's why this scene is awesome and deep and is much more adult and unique than all those stupid "God/parent helps to believe in yourself again" cliches. Also, I'd recommend you to see the storyboards of the early version of the white wolf scene, created by Harald Siepermann. The early version (as well as the official novelization) had more symbolic elements and more hints that the white wolf is only metaphor, i.e. he's not real. In the final film these hints are more subtle. Plus, all production materials (and the novelization) depict the white wolf as a male too. About Balto-2 and the invention of its crew, how they presented the white wolf. That's from interview with Dev Ross, scriptwriter of Balto-2: "Aniu became the white wolf and is now the Great Mother of all wolves and serves as their guide - if they will listen. She represents the "call of the wild" that exists in us all. Most of us ignore that call, repress it or can't even hear it. But some do. Balto did, but fought it to be like regular dogs. But his daughter could not repress the desire to return to her roots, her true nature. Aniu is part of the Great Spirit. She is the reminder that we all are part of nature and must honor nature as a powerful force. Aniu shows herself to those who will listen. (Trivia: In my mind, her great love for her pups and her wolf pack made her a guardian spirit once she died. And, yes, she joined in with a Greater Force, a Great Guardian Spirit. Unfortunately, I don't know, why and how she died - that was decided before I came on the project.) The white wolf was in the first Balto, but not developed. I loved her and wanted to make more of her in my film, so I made her Balto’s mother. No one gave me any information on her, so I named her Aniu and developed her a bit more. I was hoping to do more with her in another film, but I wasn’t hired to do another. White wolf symbolized being in touch with one's true self, one's true nature. She is an invitation to explore the deepest parts of yourself. She is the Great Mother, the one who loves you absolutely. The one who wants you to self actualize." So... Aniu became white after her death and transforming into guardian spirit/deity/goddess, who is also the part of some Great Spirit (as well as the raven and other totem spirits, I guess). I can say that this Great Spirit was shown in the cave (those drawings-murals), where Muru sang to Aleu. Plus, there was one concept art, in which all wolves come to Aniu just like to the revered deity. Plus, Balto already remembered Aniu as white well before how he accidentally got lost and then was found and adopted by Boris. Plus, wolves refer to her as the Great Aniu and never mentioned that she died or ever existed as a living wolf. Plus, Aniu, the raven, the fox and others are depicted on the humans' totem pole, I think it pretty clearly hints that Aniu and CO are ancient. Ah... Balto the half-spirit, great... And that's also her answer about Balto's husky-father: "Balto’s father was never developed. It’s just a known fact that there are mixed wolf and dog breeds - as can happen in the wild, if a dog is feral or loose. I raised a wolfdog myself. In my own mind, I imagined Balto’s father to be a stray dog, a loner, a survivor. He is like a human father, who begets a child and then never even knows it." And... the sequel (and even the 3rd film, which was created by the scriptwriters, who worked on the original film) actually hinted the fact that there was no love between Aniu and this dog and that Balto never had a father (then why Balto considered himself as a half-breed instead of wolf, if he lived only with mother-wolf in the wild? why he considered his unknown father as a dog? why humans considered Balto as a wolfdog instead of wolf, if Boris found and raised him, not humans? why Balto had this problem "Who am I?", if he would perfectly know that he's the wolf due to those facts and want to be with wolves in a pack, not with humans and dogs who rejected, hated and bullied him all his life? Why he was ashamed of his wolf nature and wanted to be a dog, having the wolf as mother and the sarcastic grumpy goose as a father figure?). In the sequel Balto mentions only his wolf-mom, he describes her as "white as snow and with warm voice, which made Balto feel safe" and that "he accidentally got separated from her, being very young, and 'cause of this he never spent much time with mother". I.e. Balto has fond memories about his wolf-mother and absolutely nothing of his father. About father he barely says only "A husky, who "had pup(s) with" the wolf" (i.e. "mated with", not even "fell in love with" for example). In 3rd film Balto confidently says about Boris "He's the dad I never had". That's the great example, how different crews interpret the film or character(s).

When I was doing my most recent half marathon race in September 2020, this is how I was feeling. Half Marathon = 13.1 miles. Think Kirk Gibson 1988 World Series. Like Kirk Gibson. Already 11 miles in this half marathon race, still at PR pace. Then comes the bad news, both my legs locked, I had two bad legs, I had 2 miles left to finish this race, even though I lost my PR record pace after 11 miles in, I was hurting, I was feeling cramps in both legs, I felt like giving up after now being lapped by the Marathon leader half a mile later. He said after passing me, 'you got this man!' I told him 'Finish the job and celebrate'. He did win and was the only Marathon runner to lap me as Half Marathon runner. Thank God. Now I'm at the mile 12 mile mark. The huge pedestrian bridge is the final mile (majority of it). I am now past that, one of the cyclists (Bike Crew for the race) saw me struggling. I told him 'stay with me and help me out but don't touch me. If you do I am disqualified.' In USATF rules Any person who physically helps someone finish, no matter who it is gets disqualified. He did help but he used the bike with the speed I left running (slowing down and going continuously), and he stayed with me until I got to his bike crew zone lines. He did say, 'I gotta stick to my zone due to my bike crew official job. I will watch you the rest of the way.' I told that guy (Matt) 'Thanks Matt! I hope to God I finish.' 'You will Alex. Trust me.' Now at mile 13, just .1 miles left. The finish line is now in sight. I literally am holding on. I'm just thinking run the rest, despite the pain I'm in with my two cramps. I'm now 100m away, everyone who is still there is clapping, the spectators are clapping for me, I didn't see my mother who was watching but I think I heard her voice. I'm now seeing it. And 20 seconds later. HE IS DONE!!! *crowd cheers and roars* The Rocky Celebration When I finished. Even though I didn't finish with a PR, it wasn't my worst time. I'm more shocked on that than getting lapped by a marathon runner. That was my 8th half marathon finish. 'Out of everything crazy that has been going on all this year in 2020, THE IMPOSSIBLE HAS HAPPENED!' I got my finisher medal as well. No finish. No medal. Celebration Drink happened 3 hours later! Jameson and Coke! Like Balto and like Kirk Gibson, I was struggling, but in the end, all 3 of us are victorious. Determination!!!
