We have had our Bambu Lab X1 Carbon 3D printer for a while now and we have seen some features and hacks online that we were dying to try… so we tested our top five out and in this video we see whether they are worth doing or if they are just a bit of a waste of time!
Bambu Lab have redefined consumer 3D printing, and there is no denying that, even if they do have their critics, and it is the little features like this that are taking the convenience of 3D printing to the next level.
We run through these top features for the Bambu Lab X1:
1. Bambu Lab AMS Filament Backup
2. PLA and PETG Supports - Support Interface Layers
3. Bambu Lab X1 Carbon Drying Filament Function
4. Respool Cardboard Spools
5. Bambu Lab Purge Into Object Function
If you have seen any features that we haven't covered in this video we would love to hear them, and with designing and prototyping we don't get too much time to test everything out to the finest detail, so if you've found some improvements on the features we tested, everyone would love to hear them in the comments!

Hey. I had some PETG filaments from 2016 that I gave up back then due to technical limitations. I got them drying in the X1C as "PLA", no plastic containers, in their cardboard box, and... a pile of 4 rolls, for 12 hours, didn't turn. I just wanted to dry excess moisture. Well, I've printed about 10 objects with them, no failures... compared to the 80% failures from 2016, this is marvelous. Cheers.

For the filament dry feature I actually use it to dry out the reusable silica beads. I put silica holders in all my spools as well as in the AMS and when they get to wet they change color. Then I just pop the holders in the machine set it to 100c for an hour or two with the exhaust fan running. And they are ready to be used again. Also I made all my holders out of PETG, one because its safer to print than PLA and also because PETG is heat resistant enough for the silica to dry as well.

For the failover filament, where the AMS continues to another spool when the first one runs out, you don't *have* to have the same color filaments. You can have white as the "ready to run out" filament and green as the failover filament. You just have to tell the AMS that they're the same. They do have to be the same temp/cooling wise, though (PLA -> PLA, etc). I do this all the time to finish off really low spools that can't really print anything by themselves.

Do you have to set the same color in the AMS though? Regardless of the filament color physically, do you have to set them in the controls to the same? Or will it use any color as long as the material properties match?

Biggest positive on the drying feature is for materials you might not be able to dry in a regular filament dryer. Bambu's PA-CF wants 90c for 12+ hours before you even try to print with it- not viable in most generic Amazon filament dryers. It may not be necessary for PETG/PLA printing, but more exotic materials? Could be a godsend.
@playconveyor
@playconveyor Жыл бұрын
‘Quickly goes outside to check the max temp on my filament dryer’… oh it’s 55c 🤦🏼‍♂️ Luckily we don’t do much with PA-CF but for that the Bambu would definitely be a godsend! Do you print much PA-CF?

@someot
@someot Жыл бұрын
Those $30 filament dryers you speak of typically only go up to 50 or 55C max temp. If you need to dry heavy duty filament, especially the really hygroscopic stuff that requires a really low moisture content (Bambu PAHT-CF comes to mind), you need a dryer capable of up to 90C. Those types of dryers are closer to $200. So yeah, maybe for printing PLA only it's a bit of a gimmick, but if you're printing PLA only you could probably make do with just a P1P anyway. It's still useful too for a novice who just wants to buy one singular "premium product" that does everything they need.
@playconveyor
@playconveyor Жыл бұрын
The Bambu is definitely more suited to drying the heavier duty filament, your right! I guess our issue was the fact we lose our printer for up to 12 hours at a time, which I guess for many people wouldn’t be a viable option. It’s great for a ‘get out of trouble’ feature though!
@someot
@someot Жыл бұрын
@@playconveyor I would still disagree that it's a 'get out of trouble' feature. To me, it's an excellent feature for a hobbyist who has occasional need to print the hefty stuff. Rather than shell out $200+ for a super filament dryer, you just chuck it in the printer. Suddenly, all of those projects that you avoided because they required a Nylon part or similar can be tackled with minimal extra effort.

One way i have seen others test how moisure is lost is to weigh the filement ibefore and after it's dryed. It should weigh a bit less after drying, maybe a few grans, especially if its got a lot of moisture in there as water is heavy so should shave a bit off the weight after its veen dryed. If not, then there probably wasnt enough moisture for it to he dryed. As others have nentioned PETG or any CF mix would be easier to test and more of a real life scenerio. PLA was made specifically for 3D printing which is why it's the easiest to print with. It might if been engineered to reduce absorbing water but thats just me soeculating. PLA ccan sit around for years and still print fine. I'm not sure about soaking it un water though. :)

One use of the filament dryer is just having another place to dry filament. If I'm doing anything with nylon it's basically mandatory it goes into the dryer box for 12 hours and stays in there for whenever I print, the dryer on the Bambu just gives me another place if I want to dry something else that can stay out with printing and get it ready for the next day. With a Bambu X1, machine downtime is the least of my concerns.

Most of these features require an AMS, or have to do with an AMS. An AMS is optional. You only get one with the X1C if you buy the combo, not if you buy the normal X1C. It would've been nice to see a video of things you can do with an X1C (like the title says), not things you can do with an AMS. Two dedicated videos might be nice, one for things you can do with an X1C, and one for things you can do if you also have an AMS.
@playconveyor

You’re right about the AMS, but as a stand alone printer the Bambu, whilst being fantastic, doesn’t have many more bells and whistles than other printers - but the features the Combo provides are very very good so we thought lumping them together would be best.

Might want to use a filament that is more hydrophonic like nylon. PLA won’t suck much moisture in. An expensive spool of nylon will get ruined after 20 minutes out in the open. Would be endive prints if you bought a new one after each print. Same with tpu, you want to dry even the new spools.

@@playconveyor I have been thinking about this. It might be worth creating a reference sheet with height and weight of 'purge' items. You can then match a purge item with a printed one and hopefully it will then create less poop as they match in height. If you have a model that is 150mm and produces 100g of poop then find items that are same height and multiply number until weight uses up as much poop as possible.. Hope this makes sense!

filament like nylon CF is where the drying feature comes in handy because nylon is the most prone absorb moisture fast compared to other filaments and the small CF tubes in the filament absorb moisture rapidly because of the capillary effect. Ur test was a little flawed because while PLA is nice to keep dry, iv printed with 2 year old filament with no problem. but the CF Nylon filament was useless within a week if kept outside. so for the people who moslty print with PLA can use the printer to dry there engineering grade filament when the need arise instead of keeping a special equipment to dry that's sitting idle most of the time .

Yeah great summary at the end, we haven’t used Nylon for quite a while now so it will save us buying a £200+ heater for it (it’s been sat in the workshop for a long old time). Follow up because for some reason it won’t let me add this into the original comment. There is something you can use purged filament for! The artme 3D is a kit you can purchase for around 630-700 USD. It’s truly a helpful machine. (Disclaimer: You have to 3D print some parts yourself I believe and you need a lot of purged filament for it to be worth it. You do need to shred the filament to be in smaller bits. You can shred failed and old prints to put inside of it. Make sure you keep materials with materials. You can’t combine something like PLA with lets say ABS. Plastic types should not mix.)

Nice clip, I have wondered about infill used for other parts. Drying filament if it is too damp for basic heat box, is in the range of cheap food dehydrator for single spools. For a few spools, your electric oven, gas oven I'm not sure of, naked flame and all that stuff could be too near to a whoosh bang, ooh nasty moment. Before you get carried away it is a good idea to check your oven thermostat is not telling you porkies and if you clean the oven after use, it will reduce any danger from contamination from plastic fumes but mainly gaining appreciation from her indoors removing the need to sleep with your eyes open.

I hard disagree with you on the stance of the heated bed not being practical. Sure you COULD go and jus tbuy a new role on amazon... and then wait 2-4 days for it to show up. If you're in a place where you have 6 hour shipping, then you are in a. nuanced position. And if you're not, then you're still waiting the time for the new fillament. What if taht was your last role? What if the work check didn't come yet and you're down to your last role of wet fillament? What if youre someone who just doesn't want to waste? It's a totally practical feature that uses pre-existing infrastructure to allow for the accomplishment of yet another task. How in any way is that not the defenition of practical? It has muti use application. I feel like you tossed that one in there just to throw a a dissaproval in, or you did not think about the stances and inccidents where that would be a wished for and very useful tool.
