God they were gorgeous. They were humble too. They never acted like they were stuck up stars. They remind me of the members of ABBA & Eddie Van Halen in their humbleness. EVH, once when asked how does it feel being revered like some guitar god & being featured on the covers of all the magazines of the day, said "I don't know about all that. I'm just a punk kid who loves to play guitar I'm not a star nor special I'm just one of the guys" Ummmm, if that's not the understatement of all time I don't know what is. Well, these ladies were like that. They could dance too. Every single one of them. I don't know who I like best because I love them all. Sorry, but if you weren't around when Bananarama was at their peak.................I cannot explain how awesome a time it was to you, and I won't even try.

What I liked about Bananarama is that they never made any false claims .. they never claimed to be good singers or dancers, they were just three ordinary girls who happened to be in the right place at the right time and made the most of it, they never got carried away with their own hype or had any ideas of grandeur ... brilliant stuff

Hearing this brings back for me happy memories of dancing with some friends to this song at a club in West Los Angeles in July 1986. I was in my early 20s, having graduated from college 3 months earlier. It was one of the happiest, most carefree moments of my life, the 8 weeks I spent in Southern California during that glorious summer of 1986.

I used to go to LA on vacation several times a year from my home in Minneapolis. I always went to my favorite West Hollywood club, which I think was called KOX. Perhaps we crossed paths there?

Absolutely love Bananarama. Brilliant. Never took themselves too seriously but their music was fantastic. Nothing really rehearsed (but that was the way it was in the 80s...the IG generation wouldnt understand) but they were always brilliant. Actually seeing them this week (tomorrow) at Chelmsford racecourse

And many US radio stations (especially oldies) back then referred to this as "Venus by Shocking Blue" to avoid confusion with Frankie Avalon's "Venus" he hit with originally in 1958 and with a disco version in 1976.

Fun Fact about Venus by Bananarama. In the US, it spent Labour Day of 1986 at #1. In their UK home? #8. It is not even one of their 5 greatest hits in the UK! In fact, Bananarama has yet to have a #1 (or a #2, for that matter) hit in the UK. It Ain't What You Do, Shy Boy, Robert DeNiro's Waiting, Love In The First Degree, and a cover of The Beatles' Help, all placed at #3 or #4 on the charts.

The dance movies done in the original video, and in this video, were done by none other than Bruno Tonioli, now one of the judges on Dancing with the Stars. In the 1980s he was doing the choreography for many videos, including Elton John and others.

Every era has a bunch of "IT" moments that don't really make sense to other generations, either before or after. Bananarama were just a group of super cute and sexy young women making electronic pop music candy. Their fame was like a warm and sunny summer's afternoon, brief but brilliant, and leaves you wondering if it was a memory or a dream.

I love Bananarama but this is like at a bachelorette party being held in a gay bar and watching some drunk girls storming the stage during a drag show thinking they've got it- yeah baby they've got it

It was actually policy of TOTP requiring all bands not to sing, only lip sync to avoid the ensuing static from the electronic equipment on the stage, which was not set up for live performances since the studio had to accommodate the dancers. At least that is what I heard years later.
