They don't work without either of them. If there is something well known about them, it is that they are all special and difficult to replace. It goes beyond music or skill. It is their charisma.

The thing about Miku is that everyone sees her as the goofball, dominating interviews and being the main speaker for the band. It's all got to do with personality. Miku is an extrovert extraordinaire and just has that knack for putting people at ease and putting them under her spells, lol. If you look at the rest of the band, I would say that they are all introverted to varying degrees, though the minute Kanami gets on the stage, it's like another personality takes over. But as they have been together and gotten more exposure to their fans, especially outside of Japan, they have become much more confident in their live performances and it really shows. I think Saiki has progressed the most in being more comfortable in her frontwoman persona. But in the end, it all comes down to Miku. She is a born showman and has had the drive and intelligence to take her dream and make it a reality. Look at the work she has put in learning to play the guitar at a very proficient level. It also helped hugely to have Kanami as her sensei. But the most serendipitous part is that each member of the band is almost like part of a hive mind, where they all know what each of them can and will do. This is very rare in the music world given the generally volatile nature of artists. In a way they remind me of SCANDAL, where Haruna, Tomo, Mami and Rina have been together for 17 years, since high school, and are still putting their best forward. Stereopony was very similar that way in how close the band members were, right up until the end. I believe that this is where we will see Band-Maid in the future and have that same kind of lengthy career. The two key points for success are Kanami's musical genius in composition and Miku's genius in the social end of the spectrum. At first it was just Miku and Omajinai Time, then came Saiki and Kanami's Japanese Lesson and asking questions of the crowd. Then we have Misa's Opening Ceremony and Akane's Gorilla and banana peel fame. It all came together as they grew into their roles in a way that has permanently endeared them to their fans. Sorry for being so wordy, I kind of got carried away.

Each and every one of these nutty, beautiful women are beyond tallented. More charisma than any other band I have seen in my 60 years of listening to music. But to me, Pigeon seems to be the gel binding them together. Love her so much.

Any picture of Miku--in "battle dress"---immediately evokes images from paintings of the French Revolution !-----with her typical red rosette motif on her head-dress, Miku is the perfect image of the wild and determined revolutionary----ushering in a new age of freedom for France ! ....(and of course it applies for anything, too !)

They are all so talented, so cute and entertaining. And they perform so well together.. it really is a special collaboration.

It's nice to know they can all sing if called upon, but, all five, instrumentaly all connect together. Saikis instrument is her wonderful voice!

For me it's that Miku playing give the freedom for Kanami to play what Kanami does. Without Miku, Kanami would have to play in a different style. Yes you could get someone else, but Muki has been taught to play by Kanami, so the 2 jell together so well.

well without miku, band maid will be just a generic rock band... There are many other female rock band with higher skill than band maid, but their "maid" theme is what made it viral IMHO
