There is a "gap" in the look and the sound. The cute maid outfits completely belie the fact that Band-Maid can melt your face. Seriously!

Danyn got the message. Band founder Miku, rhythm guitar, started the band with the idea of cute maids playing hard rock. She wanted that disconnect between the visual and the aural.

The best Japan rock band 🤘

They celebrated ten years as a band with a tour of the US and Japan. This three and a half hour concert. Yes three and a half hours at Yokohama Arena was a brilliant culmination of that celebration year. So many great bands in Japan but Band Maid are easily my favourite for their many styles of Rock.

I like to think the maid outfits are an ironic punk rock middle finger to the expectations of the role of women in Japan.

When Band-Maid started their outfits were very similar, but the change was started by singer Saiki ripping off the apron because she hated it. They've changed their style every year or two, getting more distinctive each time. In truth, only one is obviously recognisable as a maid these days. And yes, playing in a style that contrasts to their look is the whole point.

*"Hate?"* (from this same concert) for the vocals. Not metal screaming or anything ... the actual lyrics are brutal as hell. Plus more bass and guitar goodness.

Danyn referred to the lead vocalist (Saiki) as a "Goth queen," but I would have to disagree on the technical point of the fact that Band-Maid doesn't fit into the Goth-rock style.
