Diving in to from now on by band maid, sing 3 live versions and the official music video, but mainly focusing on the lead work, licks and solo of Kanami Tōno. Lots of techniques, some great tonal shifts between major and minor, chromatic madness, octaves, whammy pedal pitch shifting, tapping, trem picking the open strings, everything and the kitchen sink... as you'd probably expect from these Japanese rockers!

May I just say, you spent the better part of 30+ minutes just on Kanami, and you could spend twice that on the bass, drums and rhythm guitar, not to mention the piano, which I think is very light in the mix the whole way through but peeks out more at the end. A masterpiece in my opinion. I imagine Kanami wrote this at the piano. Another video with a focus on rhythm would be great to see as well.

That was epic Jack. As a "non musician mouth guitarist" I found the minor/major discussion the most interesting. I wondered what created that triumphant/soaring sound. I have noticed that she uses it during some of her outro solos...Sayanokidori being one. It really creates an emotional high. I'm still a little confused on what exactly an open string is. I recently heard one guitar player said that Kanami has made him think a lot more about composition. He said before he would focus on learning new techniques if he saw something cool. He said he can do the techniques Kanami does but it is how she utilizes and combines techniques to create her compositions that he finds fascinating. It may have been mentioned in the 1st video comments but they like opening with this song at festivals because it allows them to establish their musical chops with ppl not familiar with them (plus it has a great melody).
@JbfMusicGuitar
@JbfMusicGuitar Жыл бұрын
Superb, glad that demystified it a little bit! Ah, ok an open string is where you play a string on the guitar and don't hold down any fret. So if you play the E string (without fretting anything) you'd call it the 'open string'. Here she was fretting notes, then playing the string un-fretted (open). Hopefully that make a bit more sense? That's an interesting take, I suppose its about using technique to create expression, rather than technique for the sake of technique? That makes sense, so it's like' yeah we're dressed up, it's a bit of a visual gimmick, but we can actually play' type thing? I imagine it should work out well for them!

There's synth, piano, and strings throughout but they are only noticeable in places. The opening synth (c#' e' d#' b c#' e' d#' f#' ~ ) seems like foreshadowing of what is to come. The strings and piano are present in bass feature, and the piano is really noticeable at the pick-up to the final chorus.

From Japan BAND-MAID released Shibuya Eggman's live just before their US tour on Christmas Day on the 24th. Only fans can watch until January 23rd. It may be the best sound quality and performance ever. A total of 22 songs will be performed. This is a valuable opportunity to experience BAND-MAID's live performance. I'm sure there will be new discoveries.

Not a set closer. They placed this near the middle of the set and accompanied it with a Miku lead song in order to give Saiki an extended rest. In a couple of the US shows they actually paired this with Onset. Those were lucky audiences indeed.

Bravo! 👏👏 You outdid yourself with that one, Jack! I don't see how anyone could not like that presentation. As for my take, "From Now On" seems to be yet another in a growing list of Band-Maid compositions tailor-made for a large symphony orchestra. There are parts in "From Now On" that to me are just calling to be played by a brass section, and other parts that would sound killer played by a section of violins. Curious if you would agree with that take?

That burnout (32:35) was very, very Santana! Reminded me of his song Europa. Amazingly detailed analysis, Jack - hats off to you for all the hard work. Last xmas day we got the 14 song acoustic set from Band-Maid which I'd have to recommend seeing if you get the chance. They mixed up the band so that, apart from all of them playing, there were duets and trios too. Especially impressive was the version of SAYONAKIDORI (which translates to Nightingale in a most beautiful way; SA=small YO= night NAKI= singing DORI= bird) featuring MISA on bass, Akane on drums (using rods instead of sticks) and Miku on acoustic guitar and vocals - kzfaq.info/get/bejne/qa2qdLSazMewYWg.html . Have a happy christmas!

In all of the new Band Maid Prime videos, you can see Kanami's pedal board and she is incorporating an Eventide Harmonizer H9. Can you elaborate the use of the H9? What do I know, I'm a Bass player, Po! Great tutorial, Sir! 🦍🍌
@JbfMusicGuitar
@JbfMusicGuitar Жыл бұрын
I know very little about that specific effect. But from memory (which might be incorrect), it can add a harmony part and layer it with the original sound. Most harmonisers just do one interval, so like RATM's Know Your Enemy Tom Morello's intro and solo have an added 5th above, but I think the Eventide can even keep it in key (provided you set the scale), so you could get those Iron Maiden, Thin Lizzy style harmonies with one player!

Jack are you feeling harassed yet? It seems every time you do a Band Maid video you run out of the little I things in the corner. I think one of these days you need to make just one video explaining all of the various techniques Kanami uses, it would probably be a 90 minute long one :) If not longer.

Jack, thank you for another great analysis. Sometimes my head is swimming to keep up. This is NOT a complaint just saying there is so much there. Jack would it be possible to comment on the overall composition? Just some of your thoughts. Unfortunately, not being a musician you may have commented but I missed it. Anyway, thank you.
