Band BIO
The band formed in July 2013. Singer/guitarist Miku Kobato, formerly an employee of a Japanese maid café, envisioned forming a band that juxtaposed the maid image with rock music. Kobato recruited lead guitarist Kanami Tōno after an Internet search. Tōno had performed as a singer-songwriter and suggested her occasional backing drummer Akane Hirose for the new band. Hirose in turn suggested bassist Misa, with whom she had attended music school. On July 24, 2013 they had their first live performance at the PP Audition held at Osaka Deep, as a quartet with Kobato on vocals. The band then decided to recruit an additional lead singer and selected Saiki Atsumi during auditions. Their first performance as a five-piece was at the P Festival at Shibuya-AX on August 22, 2013.
Early in their history, Band-Maid regularly performed live at various venues around the Tokyo area. The group released their debut mini-album Maid in Japan in January 2014, written in collaboration with musicians Masahiko Fukui and Kentaro Akutsu (the latter formerly of the musical group Zero). In August 2014, they released the maxi-single "Ai to Jōnetsu no Matador" (titled "Love, Passion, Matador" internationally). In November 2015 they released their sophomore mini-album New Beginning. The album was their first chart placement, reaching No. 64 on the Japanese Oricon weekly albums chart. The band undertook a tour of Tokyo venues to promote the album through February 2016, culminating in a sold-out concert on February 14.
In March 2016 they had their first overseas performance at Sakura-Con in Seattle, Washington. The group released their third mini-album and major label debut, Brand New Maid, in May 2016 on the Nippon Crown sub-label Crown Stones and JPU Records overseas. That album reached No. 19 on the Japanese Oricon weekly albums chart. In October and November 2016, they went on their first world tour that took them to Mexico, Hong Kong, and six countries in Europe.
In January 2017, Band-Maid released their first full-length album titled Just Bring It. It was preceded by the single "YOLO," released in November 2016. Just Bring It reached No. 16 on the Japanese Oricon weekly albums chart.[26] Band-Maid appeared at the 2017 Golden Melody Awards and festival in Taiwan on June 23-24 The maxi-single "Daydreaming/Choose Me" was released in July 2017. They covered "Honey" for the November 2017 Mucc tribute album Tribute of Mucc -En

The last chorus is so powerful. It feels like an explosion carrying the build up in the previous choruses. Saiki just goes all out. Perfect climax. Followed by an extended melancholic outro. It's like a super awesome firework show. My new anthem.

The thing I see most in their new stuff is Miku's confidence level has gone way up, she is writing in a lot more vocal stuff for herself, she is doing pick slides, playing her own leads, and that also shows Kanami is more confidence in her too. This is giving the band more confidence overall and giving them a fuller sound. This is only going to continue to get better.

@Charles T. Velten Yeah i know what you mean its the Hard Rock Death in 2002. That i moved to Jazz and Jazz Rock after discovering the amazing Frank Zappa in August 2006 I can highly recommend to You the Solo work of Paul Gilbert check his Albums Space Chip One and Burning Organ. You will love them. But also his pure Instrumental Album Get Out of my Yard is amazing. Anyways Yes we are very lucky having Kanami as the Songwriter for Band Maid She s a musical genius and Master of all Genres of Hard Rock and Metal. and that in her late 20 ies.

True, miku is very cheeky, but it seems to me that they all have a little more attitude on this album. More free sounding. More aggression. They are all playing fantastic with a ton of confidence, but to me the vocals sound killer, better than ever. They seem to have found a real "Sweetspot" in using both the vocalists to the best possible sound. The way they produced and mixed this album is way, way better than on Conqueror. So far, Props to the new label Pony Canyon!

I think those that have been following them for a while will recognize the story of their journey and declaration of where they are headed from this point, in both the music and lyrics of the song. There are also many Easter eggs in the lyrics and video itself... older songs, MVs, album covers... In the Limited Pressing edition of the album, this song appears on both the “Roots” and “Progress / Evolution” CDs. Once again reinforcing the music and lyrics of the song. It’s a storytelling and message.

Kanami wasn’t kidding when she spoke about being a “riff machine”. This album is choked full of amazing riffs (H-G-K being my fav) Btw this MV has the potential to really blow up as it has just the right mix of undeniable groove, catchiness, well crafted MV, easy to understand lyrics and all the usual intricacies of the BM sound, without being as complex/aggressive like their core stuff which might be too much for casual mainstream audiences. Kanami’s maturity as a songwriter is evident here. Even the English lyrics though still rough, is comparatively better than all of their previous ones. It feels more aligned, there’s less inconsistencies and the wordplay with their previous releases are a nice touch. Miku did a stellar job here. At their current point, I honestly can’t think of a better way to appeal to the masses, without having to compromise who they are and what their music is about. I truly hope this gets the exposure it deserves. Everything about this is screaming “This is who We are, This is our Best, This is our Rock!” Having known them for a while now, when I watched this for the first time it felt so gratifying that I almost teared up. This is special, not just as an ode to their beginnings but also a declaration of their determination to keep doing what they do best in the years to come.

@@dicodec This definitely has Badass written all over it. I think this vibe stems more from their confidence now, not just in Kanami’s songwriting but also Saiki & Miku’s vocals. WD was their most solid hard hitting album but it was also a wall, and Conqueror felt like their attempt at going past that, redefining themselves, trying new things. The vibe it gave me was a fresh, experimental one. But on Unseen World, they just went all in. I don’t have a musical background but its still obvious to me how confident Kanami in particular has grown with the many choices she made throughout this album. Its not the same on-your-face rock energy anymore. There are moments where she pulls back and lets it simmer like the bridge section of manners and then there’s places like in H-G-K and Black hole where she just let everyone go ballistic coz they know they can handle it now. This maturity is most apparent in this album and I feel its a huge step forward for her as a songwriter. Miku is the other one who impressed me the most. Her role felt like it switched from just the backup singer/rhythm guitarist to a separate instrument handling all their sound effects 😅 she is all over the place and added so much to the rich dynamics esp. in the vocal sections. This album, in all sense the word, felt like the culmination of everything they explored in Conqueror. Truly their latest, and firmly their Finest. With a capital freaking F!

The Dragon Cries has nothing on this... they’ve taken part of that song and took it to another dimension. It's a famous story that Kanami was stunned when Saiki and Miku went to NEW YORK and heard the completed "dragon cries". The melody has changed a lot, but the backtrack remains the same, so Kanami would have thought it was messed up. Certainly, this song has a monotonous impression for a BAND-MAID song with many gimmicks. I would like to hear "dragon cries" which is returned to Kanami's melody.

Finally! somebody actually points out how awesome Miku's first wail is. So far I've only seen it elicit a smile or a widening of the eyes. The lick Kanami uses to transition out of it is super-sweet too. In that pause around 2:20 after Saiki's "Courage!", if you listen carefully on headphones you can hear, back in the distance, a sequence of a synth or wah/reverb "tick", then an incredibly fat fuzzed-out note with a grace note (either low on a guitar or high on the bass) setting off a tom fill to slam into the chorus drop. Band-Maid doing Band-Maid things, so subtly I'm surprised I noticed it after only twenty or thirty listens. Love the frame-stabilization headbanging, btw (careful not to overuse it though.) EDIT: On another listen, that fuzzed-out note sounds like it might even be the noise you get when you plug into an amp or touch the instrument end of a plugged-in cable to something. Wild.

I think this has topped my number 1 favorite BAND-MAID song which was Wonderland. Theres just so many little things with this song. Mikus screaming is amazing! You can see she was bending some strings too! Hitting slides throughout the song! Shes growing up as a guitarist! This song is just the grooviest song that you can just blast for hours. This song is my favourite song period. Ranks up there with Hotel California, The Trooper. It's so anthemic. I don't know half the time what Akane is doing, the drumming is so arhythmical compared to a typical hard rock song. And Miku just brings it with her screaming. Just harsh enough to take her seriously. Of course everyone gets to shine on this one. And the outro is just so perfect. The song is like getting beat up and at the end, the perp gives you a light touch. It just has me saying "Again"

The Pidgeon really gets to fly freely in this song, and everyone goes with her! It's fantastic, so see how they (especially Miku) have grown as musicians I was also floored by the Jameraquai "Virtual Insanity"-esque outro. The 12 songs released so far are amazing. Enjoy! This song is great but not my favourite. I have a request... please do Sayonakidori (Nightingale). It’s a Miku song so there is low chance of it having an MV... so no need to wait! Miku’s backing vocals are amazing on the whole album and Sayonakidori is like the cherry on the cake - Miku solo! Kanami seems to want to kill Miku with a really high pitched refrain part and apparently wrote a solo part for Miku to play live as well.

To be fair, the guitar part at 4:31 wasn't Miku playing. It's in the right channel in my headphones, so it's definitely Kanami. It just looks like Miku is playing it in the video because her hand is moving across her guitar. Miku is doing the bends between 4:12 and 4:16 though (left channel).

@@dicodec If you go back and watch their older pro-shot live videos, you'll hear the guitars clearly split between left (Miku) and right (Kanami) channels. I mean you can take the right side completely away from your head and just listen to Miku's parts with no bleed from Kanami, and vice versa. I think they merge the two a little more in studio recordings, but even in this video you can take away the left side, and you won't hear Miku's bends in the right ear, because that's Kanami's "side" :-)
