If you realy want to know their process of songwriting here an interview with the band. I saw this just posted by Tom Clark From Interview with Miku Kobato and Kanami on Headbang vol. 28 (2020-12-21) - Did you make use of it for your future production activities as well as reviewing your past? Kobato: We made use of it, po, don’t we? Our equipment, right? Kanami: Yes, we bought new equipment on this occasion, such as new audio interfaces and speakers. Mics too. Kobato: Right. In order to make more complete demos at home, we each bought a new computer, and in my case I bought a better mic to record vocal demos, po. - It seems all of you can use DAW. Kanami: In my case, I write songs almost entirely on my computer. After that, I send data to my bandmates to let them arrange it. - You know, there are usually some members who are not good at things like that in a band. Kanami: Sure, there is (laughter). I teach her. Kobato: We taught each other quite a bit during that period, po. Kanami: Such as how to program the drums. Like, “The drums are like this, so it’ll be interesting to write a phrase like this”. I taught her how to program it while sharing the screen. - So Akane-san wasn’t good at it (laughter). You Band-Maid have dense rhythm patterns and quite complicated drums and bass lines. Do you decide phrases and arrangements like that by exchanging data? Kanami: Basically I’m the one who programs the drums, but I decide them only roughly, and it’s up to Akane about habitual movements and details. I’m like “It’s all right to arrange it as you want to hit”. She’s getting better and better at programming these days, so I often receive MIDI data from her. Kobato: After that, we let Saiki, the vocalist, listen to it. She’s often like “Ah-chan (Akane) can do more, no?” or “This part should have more drums” and Akane suffers from that, po (laughter). Kanami: As for the bass, it’s up to her [note: Misa] these days. I program the synth bass, but I let her program the main bass. I exchange data with her and I’m like “Change this part like this” and so on. - Misa-san’s bass really comes to the front. Kobato: Everybody says “She should move bass lines more”, po (laughter). Kanami: However, in this album (Unseen World), we also thought we should calm down the bass a little. Up until then, the bass moved so much some bass phrases interfered vocal melodies too much, so this time she plays it a little more calmly. - You get into the studio after you have completed a song including the arrangement perfectly, don’t you? Kobato: That’s right. We first complete a song by exchanging data. We get into the studio only after we’ve shaped it perfectly, and we check it there, po. - Judging only from your sound, you look like a tough band with grooves and improvisations, but actually you are an intelligent, very modern and high-tech band. Kobato: Ha ha ha (laughter). - I think your way of production is rare for a rock band. Kanami: We are often said it’s rare..

From what I can glean from their interviews Kanami does write the basic song then brings it to the rest to allow them to expand on their own parts. Then Kanami takes it and does the final composition. In one recent interview Misa and Saiki thanked Kanami for helping them to become better song writers. Misa said she most wanted to get good enough that she could write a whole song on her own.

Here's a sentence for you, Champ: The way they always change things up within the song, never repeating verse structure, and use 4 or 5 different riff, break, bridge and run ideas where each one could be the bases for its own song... all wrapped around a memorable chorus and multiple solos by different members while Saiki's vocals focus the experience into a cohesive force with Miku's lyrics and backups, makes Kanami and the gang genius songwriters -- and Kanami maybe even a musical savant.

They are just having so much damn fun! When I watch other bands they are often deadly serious when they are playing and you can't tell if they are happy to be there or if it is just a job to them. With Band Maid, you never have to wonder. Sure, they sometimes look focused, but you see a lot of smiles. Which makes the songs a lot more fun to watch and listen too. Thanks for the reaction, I really enjoy hearing you break the song down. You point out a lot of things I would never have heard or realized what I was hearing.

It's amazing how Miku has grown into a real little rocker - obviously she had a reserve of latent talent and she plays very well now. Kanami has taught her well and clearly keeps pushing her higher. Kanami ia a workaholic if she does indeed produce a new draft song every Monday. and clearly no one is allowed to slack. But what a band and aren't they the happiest group of girls.

I really liked your analysis on this one, you helped solidify something I'd been thinking about for a while, and that is how no one is replaceable in this band. Everyone's contribution is so unique, it has their signature on it, if you will that having someone else play it would just sound weird. Take away any one member and it's not Band Maid anymore, you know? I think what you said about the whole band working together to write the songs explains this, at least in part. Things I noticed in the performance: The tiny pauses from the whole band just before going into the chorus. The second half of the second verse want to 3/4 time, and I thought the pauses at the end of each riff gave it kind of a waltz feel. Misa playing the vocal melody along with Saiki during that quiet part. How that intro riff sounded a bit like circus music. Thanks again for another great reaction!

I love "Screaming" Its been one of the fastest Band-Maid songs for a while... When "Different" came up I though "Ooooh another Screaming-like song..." , but I didn't knew at the time that "Different" was already started being written 2 years previous to it's release, so I would say that "Different" may have started even before "Screaming" or just about the same time... Now, every time some few Band-Maid songs(7 in total) appear on your channel, I always feel like you should have like a "Part 2" where you go and compare the original with the Band-Maiko version... You could have 7 episodes called "The Champ Of MAIKO" or "The MAIKO Champ Of Medium" or something... You did "Secret My Lips" with "Secret MAIKO Lips"... that would actually be episode 1. And "Screaming" would be Episode 6. You should listen to the MAIKO version as well... it's freaking crazy frenzy with the extra backing vocals... it's crazy, really crazy... OH and you can REALLY hear Kanami... (This whole concert I felt like Kanami was way way in the back... even "Dice" felt a little off-powered because of it...)

Almost all of Band-Maid's pro shot live concerts have been expertly mixed and mastered, which makes the near disappearance of Kanami's guitar in the mix from Line Cube Shibuya inexplicable. I have no idea what happened or why it was done that way. None of the earlier shows were mixed like that and none of the later (online) shows have been mixed like that. It's a shame. Rock always used to have catchy choruses. The dominance (and subsequent) dislike of pop in the charts I think caused bands to steer away from 'catchy' because bands wanted to be the opposite of the stuff in the charts. It's a shame, because it makes bands just go for heavy and extreme, because there's nowhere for them to go in terms of melody. Well, that's my opinion anyway.

Didnt mean to offend anyone.. But its funny to me because a lot of fans went crazy when they released the single start over and said that the band was finished, even though the b-side of the single start over was this song. But they judged them with just one song. A similar case with "conqueror" when not a few fans were disappointed with the album, but once again in the last track they kicked their ass with "reincarnation". 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 Just sit down and enjoy their great music. Let band-maid do the band-maid's things. 😁😁😁

Yeah, and it happened again with Unseen World. I saw a bunch of people decrying that we'd never get another Daydreaming. And then About Us happened. A great song that was maybe a few years ahead of its time. Stylistically, I think it actually fits well with the songs on 'Unseen World'. Near the end you said "familiar." Of course, that can mean similar, but still unique. There's only one other band I can think of that matches that description and they made a super career out of it. They call themselves AC/DC. That "familiar" sound, or attribute, of Band-Maid's always makes me think that AC/DC is the best comparison to make of them (if any comparison is fair.) Also, I would love to hear you react to "Oiran" by Nemophila.

Miku uses Zemaitis guitars and recently released her signature model with the company called the A24MF-FP “Flappy Pigeon”, which has a ton of pigeon related easter eggs in the design. For this song I'm fairly sure she is using either the MFG24 BK Gloss Black, or the CS24MF FR4C Black but it's hard to tell.

I like the song. I want to love it. And IMHO This version is better than the studio single. - BUT: The screechy guitar opening is just right for the subject of the song, but just a little too scratchy for my ears. Apart from those few opening bars, nothing wrong with it. -I'd almost forgotten how good the rest was. Enjoyable little rocker. interesting sections, catchy chorus - just enough anguish in the lyrics, and Saiki wrings out the pain well. Good job as always. BM is my #1 band, but this doesn't quite break new gate for me.

Nice reaction, bad mix tho imo. This looks like the recording from their performance at Shibuya, which was stellar; but the mix is frankly almost unlistenable to me, as it had Kanami sounding like she was playing offstage. I'm honestly surprised by how often this has happened in their recent lives since Zepp. Go back and listen to About Us for example: Misa's bass booms, and Kanami's guitar riffs sound like birds chirping from outside the window (then go listen to Studio Coast or Zepp). It's been a bummer for me because I encountered the band's early music first, and it was Kanami's creative guitarwork and the variety of tones that she played with that attracted me to (and seemed to dominate) those songs. I hope the band gets this sorted out (it hasn't been Shibuya bad recently, but it hasn't been Studio Coast good either - you'd think someone over there is paying attention). Kanami, pls turn up your amp! :)

Spoke my mind! Her guitar work was what initially hooked me to BM (sounded amazing in the zepp & studio coast lives). And my appreciation for her grew further after I found out she was the songwriter and arranger. So the recent concerts have been rather disappointing in regards to the mix. The shibuya one is imo their best overall concert but had the worst mix till date as well. Fortunately though, it’s getting better in their latest online ones esp. the feb one. Let’s hope their sound engineers understand that the right ear of every BM fan is reserved solely for Kanami 🤣 For the amount of dedication and work she puts in, it’d be nothing less than a public execution for anyone that takes that away from her.

It's a mistery to me in why the hell the band (or their management idk) don't upload more footage from Zepp and Studio Coast in their YT channel, especially since they are almost impossible to acquire (out of print). Hell, they should upload the entire 2 hour concerts. There's some some legendary performances there like Don't You Tell Me, Puzzle, Take Me Higher, Turn Me On, Moratorium etc etc etc and the best thing is, they have that "viral appeal" as in "what the hell am I seeing? This is amazing! I should send this video to a friend". The worse thing is, every time someone upload a video from these concerts they got copyright strike to hell. I know B-M probably wants to promote their newer stuff, but I wonder if they realize that they are "sitting on a pile of treasure" like Smaug and his gold, and keeping people away from their awesomeness. It would elevate their status even more IMO.

Well their Live @ Zepp version is really good if not better. You can here everything so much better. Actually the Live @ Zepp concert is their best work so far. The audio engineers @ Zepp there seem to make some really seriously good concerts. You might want to check that one out. This concert your watching everyone seems to like it, but it seems like the lighting overall isn dark and their instruments sound low as hell. Even Saiki sounds like she's singing from far away. The whole damn concert sounds like they're singing from inside paper bags and I am watching it with sunglasses.

To be fair, even when you say Mustaine is megadeth, but mustaine is wise enough to get a lot of talented individuals as additional flavors to his own. Imagine Rust in Peace songs without Marty's solo and Menza's drums, Imagine Peace sells without Poland's solos and Gar's Drums. But I get your point man, I just don't think megadeth is the best examples. But it's true that a lot of 80's bands were like that though especially because it was the era of virtuoso guitarists. Nice video though. Keep it up man!!!

I think the technicians who mix Band-Maid lives have too much weight in how sound their concerts. I've noticed in Kanami's sound because she is the leader guitar in a Hard Rock (_ish) band where the riffs and the (somewhat short) solos are very important and in several official videos in past years (some of them take down from YT when the band change publishers, but some still in the platform) Kanami's guitar was way too low in the mix. I'm always disappointed when Kanami step for the solo and sounds lower than the accompanying instruments.

The variation on the intro riff was almost in the classical vein where you’ll identify the main theme in so many situations throughout the symphony. This is not in my top of BM tunes - it’s a shade too prog in my opinion - but then i have no BM songs, and i’ve heard them all, that comes close to dislike. I love em all.
