Ah, lately I'm stuck with Kanami's way of writing the riffs during the chorus by literally "gently hugging Saiki's voice". Is awesome.

The lyrics Miku writes are amazing, even if we lose half of the puns and cross references or cultural aspects of writing in ideographic languages. She is a poetess.

They can make a key change sound natural, that's way it works here. And Kobato is just a big massive brain inside a tiny little cute pigeon. Even her Cluppo project, very Jpop-y, has lyrics that will floor you. The fact the her and Kanami work together is mind melting! By the way, your drawings are cool as hell, brother!

Miku's lyrics are incredible. Saw a Reddit post some time back about how Miku is very unique in sheet lyrics in that she tends to blend and/or truncate words to fit the melody of the song. Apparently something not very common in Japanese music and something that takes a good bit of talent. The other amazing thing about her lyrics, IMO, is that she doesn't write from her personal life (so she claims) but from art, TV, movies, books, manga.... and uses that for inspiration. Her lyrics are very open in a certain sense in that she writes them in a way that each listener can interpret their meaning in each listener's own way. I love the way she writes lyrics. She is one extremely cunning pigeon, po! If you can find it there is a TV poker show she was on a couple times. I'll just say that I love playing poker and I would never want to sit across from her in a game. She's fierce. That whole kawaii and pigeon affectation are merely a distraction from what really lurks underneath that cutesy exterior. Make no mistake, she's smart, driven, cunning, determined, and extremely intelligent. She's really a hawk in pigeon's clothing. :) Between her lyrics and Kanami's composition each song is a story unto itself, a journey in both lyrics and music. I think that's why, especially on Unseen World, the songs FEEL longer than they actually are. You're so engaged by the lyrics and music that you lose track of time for a few minutes. What feels like 7 or 10 minutes is only 4 1/2 minutes in reality. There's few bands in history who could pull something like that off and that list is short.

She sometimes shares movies she's been watching - very broad spectrum of styles, origin and mood. Curiosity killed the cat, but definitly not the pigeon.

@@otobokegaijin6218 I read that Reddit post. Iirc Shiina Ringo (sp?) was a big influence on Miku. I'm still trying to find out if there is a/are Japanese homophone(s) for the "ginger ale" and/or "strawberry milk" line(s) in Peace & Love. The ginger ale in particular seems out of place.

yeah man, Miku writes good shit. She acts cute and dumb, but she is one clever cookie. Not only does her lyrics have nice , and often quite profound meanings...But making Japanese sound "English" is quite a challenge, The vowel sounds are used differently in Japanese, and for her to make the words flow like they do is... Very impressive.

When I heard my first Pink Floyd song I didn't like them. It was so different from what I had been listening to, Black Sabbath, Zeppelin, Mountain. But I decided to give them a fair shake and listen to more of their music. I have been a fan for forty years. When Band Maid came out with Unseen World I knew all I had to do was listen to it a few times, and sure enough they got me. A full album of the greatest music I have ever heard. Don't try to put them in a box. There isn't one big enough.

Great comparison, now if only we could get Kanami to extend a few solos. I messed with my kids once in awhile and would play San Tropez or Seamus etc. and work my way to more popular songs to see if/when they could guess the band. Could probably do the same thing by starting with Smile or Start Over and moving up.

Hey I saw you singing along to the vocals post-bass solo in 'No God'. I really like the beauty of that part vocally as well. The lyrics from their live video is: "I believe the story. I still believe that Adam and Eve surely loved until beyond the end of their days. The world continues. Don't look away, even if it seems foolish. This too is no lie for it is your voice." Miku is an incredible lyricist and she can poetically convey both joy and sadness with beautiful phrasing.

I imagine a lot of people don't think of translating languages as difficult. "Just use the word that means 'chair' if your talking about a chair. Easy" . Now how many words for chair in English? Chair, rocker, recliner, La-Z-boy, lounge, stool, throne, etc. From what I gather, Japanese probably has not only different words for a chair, but different feelings to explain the chair with different inflections sometimes with one word representative of a phrase?? So...a chair isn't just a chair.

@@RyanMear Very well explained. And if you listen to how Saiki sings Miku's lyrics, a lot sound like they have a rhyming verse structure flow even tho most sentences don't rhyme at all. So if you took most of B-M's songs & sung them in English you'd have a terrible time trying to fit them to music. That's what makes B-M geniuses at what they do :)

"After Life" is still my favorite song of "Unseen World". BAND-MAID played it for the first time in their December 2020 livestream and all that the fans have been waiting for is them to play "Different", their newest single at the time. Near the end of the show, they started to play "After Life" and I was asking myself "do I know this song?". Where do I start. Miku, she has a quality about her that I have never seen in the music scene. She has brought together 5 amazing women, not only with different personalities, but a diverse range of musical talent. Then she has the foresight to know she hasn't the voice type to be the lead singer and finds a young woman who's voice blends perfectly with the style they want to produce. She then learns the guitar to add to the band's dynamics and not only just to play, but to play along side Kanami. In the early years she takes whatever song is written for them, studies and learns how to become a lyricist, her inspiration comes from the music and then she goes away and researches till she finds the right lyrics. The fact that the other girls have so much faith in her ability is a true testament to this amazing woman. She defends her band with a passion ....... once told by a journalist, you could sell more albums if your songs were in English her reply was .... (something in Japanese) English, F**K OFF. This may seem to be a rant, but Miku isn't even my favorite in the band, pretty close though.

Yeah. When you listen to a Kapanese person speaking it often seems like words are reused often and it should be easy to understand. But words in Japanese are context sensitive and modifications of ‘pitch accent’ changes words meaning drastically. This and more makes Japanese to English translation very difficult unless you are completely fluent in both languages.

Great review and equally great artwork! The lyrics are an often overlooked element of this band. In particular the content of their lyrics. It's understandable that it can be lost in translation but I urge one to take a closer look you may find them impactful with real substance. Side Note: You mention Mike Patton as a favorite of yours which has triggered my curiosity if you were a fan of Mr. Bungle in particular their debut self-titled album? The reason I ask is Unseen World gives off a bit of a similar chaotic texture of that Mr. Bungle debut album. The feeling of being on a wild carnival ride with an accompanying soundtrack to match all the unexpected twists and turns which compels you to get back inline and have another go at it.

The interesting thing is that you start drawing at first the eyes. If I draw a character, I start with the outline of the face. The eyes are probably the most difficult to express, because they reflect the character of the person being drawn. Therefore, if someone draws well, it is possible to recognize the drawn person by the eyes (/*eye), and this is also the case with your drawing.
@RyanMear
@RyanMear 3 жыл бұрын
Thank you. I guess I start with the eye because it is difficult. It's also one of my favorite things to draw, I'm always doodling eyes lol, PLUS I've drawn a few portraits that I'd start with the outside of the face or ear etc., then get the eye done and realize that it was too low or off to one side, but perfect. Instead of redoing the eye, I'd redo the rest of the face! So I start with the eye now...

No God... I think it's about a girl who's had a hard breakup and hasn't fully overcome the emotional trauma, meeting a guy. Though initially uncertain whether she should go for him or not she decides to give it a go. She thinks she's learnt something from previous experiences (pains) and in one step back and two steps forward way she goes further. But the the painful memory from the past still comes back to haunt her at times. She doesn't even know henr own feelings, she wants to believe and still believe in the eternal love like Adam and Eve. No matter how foolish it may be, that's how she feels. She tries to find out the guys feelings and goes through trust issues yet again, questions such as why me, what are the chances of this relationship working out, etc mess up her mind. It's better be happy go lucky, you can go anywhere you want if you wish. Don't just pray to God and hope it will work itself out, you have to push the limit and overcome all obstacles on your own if you wanna get him.
