It's February 1945 and a depleted Easy Company is now in Haguenau, France on the Rhine just across from Germany. Pvt. David Webster, who was injured during Operation Market Garden, returns to the Company but finds that his absence from the fighting in Bastogne has alienated the others and he is treated as an outsider. The Company also has a new junior officer, Lt. Henry Jones, a West Point graduate who has yet to get any battlefield experience. The war is clearly coming to an end and the men are starting to think they might just survive the war. When Colonel Cink orders a raid across the river to take prisoners for interrogation, the men are less than keen to take part but follow orders. No one believes it's worth it when one of the men dies from the wounds he receives. When Col. Cink orders another raid the next night, Capt Winters has his own unique way of dealing with the situation.

I think it’s telling that Winters had the new Lt. present for his announcement about not actually going on the mission. In canceling the mission, Winters broke the RULES, but not letting the Lt. be there would signal that what he was doing was MORALLY WRONG. There is a difference. Also, putting the Lt. in a situation where he had to either speak up or be complicit helped to ensure that he wouldn’t say anything. In any case, I think the Lt. understood the situation and felt untroubled at Winters’ decision.

In real life Webster didnt go on the patrol. He manned a machine gun on the balcony totally exposing himself to german fire. There was a couple guys that they switched for the patrol for the series. I guess just for tv since they didnt want to introduce new characters. He also said when Jackson was brought back to the basement he kept screaming for Mercier. "Wheres Mercier, wheres mercier". That being private Ken Mercier. Mercier came up to him and held his hand telling him it would be alright. Webster couldn't take it and had to leave the room. I recommend everyone to read Webster's account of the war called "Parachute Infantry".
@WWIIman1942
@WWIIman1942 5 жыл бұрын
They must've switched Webster and Liebgott's roles in the patrol in the series. In the series, Liebgott got picked to go across the river as a translator while Webster would man the machine gun (like what actually happened). However, because Webster wasn't around for the Bastogne, Liebgott was mad how they both spoke German but he got picked to go over while Webster stayed (basically was on Webster about how he always got out of stuff). Webster took it into his own hands and asked if he and Liebgott could switch roles, because Liebgott needed a break. So in the series, Webster went, while Liebgott was on the MG. They must've needed filler material for this episode. Haha

Webster was a Harvard senior student majoring in Literature when he enlisted. His trained eye and great memory when writing his autobiography means it is one of the most accurate books about his time and experience as an Easy Company soldier. There is another book about the Easy Company by Bill Guanere and Babe Heffron that resolves alot of the inaccurancies of the book and tv series

Not that I would dare to speak for 82 million people, especially when you only single-out 76 of them, but in general: Germany really has no contempt for the Airborne. When we (for example in school) talk about WW2, it is not about "defeat" but "liberation". The downvotes can also be about basically everything. Some people just downvote for the hell of it, others might not like to only have two minute videos and another one may have a problem with the way it is cut, whatever. Not everything is political.

Don’t forget that Nixon wrote the false after action report and submitted it to Col Sink.
@merrid.4550
@merrid.4550 Жыл бұрын
Book version of this scene ⬇️ "Next morning, Winters again stood at the riverbank expectantly watching the house the patrol had hit. Seconds ticked by. Then the planted satchel charge blew, smoke pouring from every window in the structure. Winters never discovered if the outpost had been reoccupied or not before it blew, but he was satisfied. That satisfaction didn’t last long. Later that morning Colonel Sink visited Winters at his HQ, accompanied by Colonel Joseph B. Harper, commander of the 327th Glider Regiment.“That was a fine job your men did last night, Dick,” Sink said. “Good work.”“We lost a man, sir,” Winters said, wanting Sink to know the price paid for two prisoners who had little to offer in the way of vital intelligence. “Private Jackson.”“Regrettable,” Sink replied. Then, “I’d like another patrol tonight. More prisoners.”Winters couldn’t believe his ears. He reddened with anger, but simply uttered a “Yes, sir” and saluted.“He’s showing off for his drinking buddy, Harper,” Winters complained to Nixon when the two were alone. “It seems we were the first regiment to send out a patrol that successfully brought back any POWs, and now he wants to brag and show everyone else how easy it is.”“He knows about Jackson?” Nixon asked.“Yes, he knows. He called it ‘regrettable.’ Jesus, the Germans are going to be on the alert. The chances of losing the entire patrol are a heckuva lot higher than the chances we’ll capture any Krauts.”“So what are you going to do?” Nixon asked.Winters thought, then said, “Find Speirs. Have him assemble the same men in the same place in an hour. I’ll brief them.”The glum faces of the men destined to make yet another patrol told Winters that they, too, were fully aware of their chances against an alerted enemy. Winters and Nixon joined the group.“Men, I want you to know I’m proud of the job you did last night,” he said. “You pulled it off perfectly. The loss of Private Jackson was an unfortunate tragedy. Colonel Sink’s proud, too. So proud he wants another patrol tonight. So here’s the plan. You’ll cross just like you did last night, same place. With that Kraut OP knocked out, you’ll have to move deeper into the town, look for another objective. When you grab the prisoners, pull back just like before and blow the signal whistle. The covering fire will make the Krauts keep their heads down again. Jump-off time will be an hour later than last night.”He paused and took a deep breath before he spoke again.“Now relax; get a good night’s sleep. Sergeant Mercier, when you report to me tomorrow morning, you’ll tell me you entered the town as planned but could get no live prisoners.” All faces turned toward him. “And if anyone asks any of you about the patrol, you’ll tell them just what I told you. The patrol was unsuccessful. Understood?”The men nodded, smiles of relief beginning to crease their faces.Speirs grinned and saluted. “Yes, sir,” he said.Winters knew he’d just risked his entire military career, and a likely court-martial, by intentionally disobeying an order from his commanding officer. But he was damned if he’d risk any more lives on a foolhardy mission that had little chance of success and a very large chance of turning into a disaster. It was a risk he willingly took.“I knew I was getting out as quick as possible after the war was over,” Winters said years later. “I had no fantasies of making the army my life. If I had any idea of making the military a career and be a career soldier, would I have disobeyed an order and not sent those men? If someone is going to make it his career, he’s not going to have it on his efficiency report ‘refused an order.’ What kind of officer is that?”Lieutenant Ralph D. Richey Jr. of F Company, now attached to Winters as S2, said, “That was a classic, sir. You should write that one up for the future.”“No, Lieutenant,” Winters said. “That’s one report that will never be written.”Machine guns and mortars from 2nd Battalion opened fire late that night, sending a stream of tracers dancing through the darkness. Winters stood on the riverbank watching, but no American soldier crossed the Moder. The men the blazing weapons were supposed to be covering were asleep in their billet.“Sink wasn’t being mean when he ordered that second patrol,” Winters said looking back fifty-eight years later. “He was proud of what we had done. But it was a dumb, dumb decision.”Winters filed no after-action report on the patrol that never was, nor did Sink ever request one. Perhaps he knew the second patrol never occurred, perhaps he didn’t. Either way he said nothing."

Christian Torres Winters did received the order for the 2nd raid but losing few of his men he couldn't risk it again. So he ordered his men to lie, that saved their lifes from a pointless operation of capturing more P.O.W.'s when the wars is near it's end

Christian Torres in the end of the episode they only got little intelligence from the P.O.W.'s from the first raid. The Intelligence was little to help the Americans so if the they did the 2nd raid, they could have lost more men since the Germans wouldn't make a 2nd mistake after that first raid
