@DrumLuv23 I respectfully disagree with parts of your analysis. You are spot on when you said hampton has improved and are headed in the right direction. And I agree that Norfolk's Pedigree is unmatched. However your scoring is a bit off. Hamptons material was more difficult than you give them credit for. To chop like that with intricate sticking and not once drop a stick or miss a part, they have to be given more credit for that. Furthermore, Norfolk cymbal line, as nice as they play they never flash. Norfolk is the only hbcu cymbal line, that I know of, that doesn't do any flashing. I know the differences are minor but every detail counts. Respectfully. Ijs

@@matthewaddie-steele524 Definitely fair enough. However, like I shared, my grading is subjective from battle to battle. I'm always evolving ny grading system but currently I evaluate some things based on the specific line. Here's what I mean: If a specific section displays all of the elements that make a solid line on the college level (level drums, proper hand skeleton, everyone knows the parts and plays them together, stoic faces, proper intervals, etc ) then that earns them an 8 every time. From then on the grading gets tougher based on creativity, delivery, musicality, etc. Other things such as difficulty of material are more nuanced. Is it easy to put together a show the way Sticky did? No. Was the difficulty of their material and display of it properly performed the same category of difficulty and display of MDFS? No. And therein lies the gap. I wanted to give something like a 6 but I also didn't want to disrespect the efforts of Sticky. It's in no way meant to disrespect the line but show, in my opinion, the current discrepancy in material played. Because a line can be an 8 in presentation but play a 4 in material. I believe that's fair in considering the differences in a line and determining an overall winner. Last night I also used it in my evaluation of the Howard/Hampton battle and it ultimately ended up being to the advantage of Sticky. My evaluation system is ever evolving so it's not my aim to offend or diminish a line's efforts. But I do want to use it to explain why I believe a specific line is the victor. Last night I evaluated lines that are more established than sticky that played, quite frankly, more difficult material. If I were to give them an 8 based on what I look for then I think it'd be accurate for me to give a notch lower to a line that's good and evolving. Example: Last night i actually gave Alcorn a 7 in difficulty of material. Their line was decent but when I paid attention to what they were playing and how it was performed it wasn't on Lane College's degree of difficulty and I gave them an 8.8. If s Lane freshman were to go to Alcorn would they struggle? If an Alcorn freshman were to go to Lane would they struggle? These are the nuanced questions to ask once the basics are down. @@matthewaddie-steele524 Here's the reason why I gave Norfolk's line a 10 despite the lack of flash: 1.) How well do they do their job? (Keeping time while other sections are doing their thing) 2. How well did they play their solo parts? 3. How together were they with their presentation and movement? 4. How well and clean did their parts fit with the overall ensemble's music? 5. What was the clean/dirt ratio? This again is what I mean. As a judge I have to take away personal bias (not saying that you are being biased). The main thing to consider in a battle is the music and presentstion. Some lines have different styles that you simply can't compare and this can't hurt their score. Just like you see Norfolk doesn't have tenors. This can't hurt their score or Sticky's because it's nothing they can really "control" so the fairest thing to do is give percentage after scoring. So if a specific line doesn't traditionally flash in one of their sections, it can't be a mark of penalizing. The marks have to be on "How well do they do what they do?" If flashing, how well do they flash as a part of their presentation? If dancing, how well do they dance as part of their presentation? I'm looking back at Sticky's cymbals and I'm seeing things that don't stack up with other stronger cymbal lines: looking around, movement not crisp, parts that are primarily time keeping and when they get intricate they're off and don't keep the pocket. I'd like to think that these are areas of improvement so that the line can continue to grow. I know they're working hard and I look forward to seeing more growth this season! 👍🏾
