Bridging the Gap: Classical Art Designed for Photographers | Adam Marelli

Bridging the gap of classical art and street photography, Henri Cartier-Bresson combined the two practices and set the world of photography on a new course. We look at how he and his followers at Magnum, converted the lessons from classical artists into the photojournalism, street photography, and portraiture. We will introduce the visual language, examining its basic grammar and the ways in which photographers can build up each element in their own work. They will be given specific examples from master painters who were proto-street photographers.
Viewers will walk away with a completely new way of viewing the design accomplishments of classical art. Museums and galleries will breathe with new life as the geometry of art and design is decoded specifically for photographers. You will be given a list of "common compositional mistakes" that many photographers make because the they are only taught to artists. We will also reveal where the "Rule of Thirds" comes from and look at additional techniques to use with a 35mm format.

As someone educated as a mathematician, I see the shapes and lines intuitively. Being good in mathematics is helpful to see a scene.

What a dead crowd for such an inspiring teacher! 16 minutes in and I've barely heard a chuckle for his wit and cleverness on top of the quality of his instruction! I seriously hope it was just the noise cancelling mics doing too good a job at blocking out the laughter and appreciation. I'd pay for lessons with this man.

Adam Marelli is absolutely amazing. This is the last of all his presentations that I could find. Thank you B&H for bringing us this Master of the craft and providing a truly powerful class to the world. This is sooooo much higher quality and richer content than most of the influencer-type videos on KZfaq today. It seems like people want to isolate photography from the broader world of Art, and thus harp on elements like depth of field, leading lines, rule of thirds, and other compositional shortcuts. But the most powerful images are true works of Art in a very intentional manner, and this video is one of the FEW videos that have ever even suggested using formal art elements in photography.

The Event Space videos are normally very good and entertaining and informative; this challenged my way of looking at the image and exposed some real weakensses in my understanding of composition. One of the best I've seen. I often see an image and 'know' that its a bit special, but cant quite put my finger on why... this has helped me understand some basic concepts to explain this, which I hope will help me really improve.
