As a retired high school band director and former member of the Marching 100, I feel compelled to give a little history lesson that may be necessary for @kbthabandhead and other new age millennials and Gen Zers. I am very old school, a boomer in fact. In 1946 Dr. William P. Foster, the Godfather of the modern HCBU band and master musician and educator, became band director at what was then Florida A&M College. During his tenure there, he wrote a book called "Band Pageantry", which became the blueprint used by all HBCU bands. It included the high knee lift, 8 to 5 marching, instrument swing and other fundamentals which are still in use today. Many of those techniques came from bands of the Big 10 colleges and universities where he studied. Dr. Foster became the President of the American Band Masters Assoc. The first and only person of Color to do so. While at FAMC and later FAMU he made quite a few innovations to the band program, including the quick step, which he called the 'Rattler". And he also developed the art of actually "dancing' on the field. He demanded a high degree of musicality, unheard of within the Black college band realm, to play the music in his repertoire. Everyone who heard the band could hear the difference in sound quality. He had the highest standards for auditioning to participate in his program. In the 1950s and 60s, bands across the nation, both black and White, marveled at the sound produced by his band, playing any and all musical types and genres. In 1950, he acquired 100 members in the band. At the time very few bands in the nation and none in Florida had 100 members. Hence the name, THE MARCHING 100. In 1978, The Florida A&M Univ. Marching 100, won the prestigious Sudler Trophy. The award given annually by the ABA (American Bandmasters Assoc.) for having the best band in the nation, the first and only predominately Black band to win the award. No HBCU has won it since. Many other bands have tried to imitate or emulate the FAMU band, the quick step, 8 to 5s, dancing on the field and Patterns in Motion (Step 2 Drills) were all innovations popularized by the 'FAMU Marching 100', hence the phase, 'most imitated band in America'. The FAMU band prides itself on never imitating any other band. If they don't do it first, they don't do it. Horns on the ground, dancing girls, etc. will never be done at FAMU. The band still continues to make musical history. In 2019, the FAMU Symphonic Wind Ensemble became the first HBCU to headline a concert at Carnegie Hall in New York. In 2022 the band performed in Paris, France for Louis Vuitton and their spring fashion introduction and recorded a TV commercial for European audiences, and many other performances. The Marching 100 also annually attains more corporate sponsorships than certainly any HBCU band in America. KB, I appreciate your band commentary, however, like beauty is in the eye of the beholder, music is in the ear of the listener. I can ascertain and realize by your comments that you are making them from your perspective. As you know, people will have varying opinions on music depending on the individual taste, however, I hope this gives you and other "Band Heads" a new or different perspective when you hear the FAMU Marching 100.

From what I have seen famu has never had to over blow. Classic balance versus power. I have never heard there low brass sound so good. Former trombone player. Non bias went to aamu. The fast cadence/March was born in Tallahassee under Dr. Foster in the ‘50s, check out the videos. FAMU were the innovators that all bands imitate, all HBCU bands especially. The 100 is the real orchestra that also March, a class of their own.

Man, it's always hard watching SWAC band heads critique the Marching 100 (or even BCU), because you guys are always expecting the 100 the mimic and do things how traditional SWAC bands (+TnSU) do things, and it's just not gonna happen. The 100 has its lane and is pretty solid at what they do. It's unfortunate 'cause halftime shows have been devalued over the past decade...and halftime shows are what put the Marching 100 on the map as one of the premiere bands in the nation. Also, it should absolutely be no surprise that 100 sounds great on the field...they've always had one of the best sounds during field shows. I don't even think your most ardent SWAC band heads can deny that. But I do understand there's a generation of kids and young adults who don't remember that FAMU consistently up against traditional SWAC schools consistently prior to 2000.

Thank you for watching the content but most of what you a saying sounds like an excuse to me. FAMU stand performance was trash to me because I expected FAMU to do FAMU but it sounds like they were trying to do something that wasn't in their lane. It sounds like an internal identity crisis to me tbh. As far as the field show, they did what FAMU does on the field.

But it's cool, keep your eyes focused on Hook-Boogie WACK programs, the P-Valley girls, and Beastie Boys, Fat Boys, and Mary Jane Girls. @@KBThaBandhead Its "giving" Swac bands can only play loud standing still so when they move around on the field you get a different sound. With the hundred the sound don't change. You get quality all the time. And you get the same sound when they dance and play. So the excuse for the swac is now lets battle in the stands so we just play loud. And get on the field with gimics and horns on the ground to dance. Call it PWI vibes but swac bands still doing pinwheels and emphasis drilling even the way they tune they drums are closer to DCI that the hundred. But PWI bands cant dance. And Swac bands cant hang with the hundred in that category which is BLACK culture. So its funny yal say the hundred is PWI and DCI and SWAC bands on the field have more characteristics outside of the things that they use that the hundred innovated. Then you said you like dance routines because everybody doing the the dance routine even the Tubas (nobody tubas dance in the SWAC hell nobody dance while playing like the hundred) but it was mid. You were grooving to the baseline and they were loud clear and dancing like every one else. They do it so easy you don't even appreciate the complexity of it all. ` The hundreds percussion is suppose to be felt over being heard by design by the mistro himself William P Foster. The Hundred don't have dancers because the hundred is the show.

Thank you for this, I'm glad there are people willing to provide the history. FAMU has long had the reputation for breeding musicians, particularly professional musicians/band directors/staff/arrangers etc. My high school director was a FAMU grad as well as two former band directors at Tuskegee. It was embedded in us coming up in high school that if you wanted to go into teaching music, that FAMU was the choice. Here in Houston We Loved our Ocean of Soul. TSU band WAS! The high tide of the SWAC. Back in the 70's! Not sure of it's decline, but a simple guess would be? "petty theft!" Ok.....* it seems like notable Alumni are pushing progress? Goes to show how important Networking and Sponsorship is to the Legacy of our institutions of higher learning! Cause when those ole soldiers were put out to pasture the game changed. Meaning, the recipe is hard to follow! Dr. Foster brought the fast march from Big 10 bands to Tallahassee in the 40s. Added an African tribal flare to make it Black and called it the Rattler in tribute to the mascot. The "death march" is in the formation of a snake stalking its prey and the Rattler cadence is the attack. You're welcome.

When you say the dance routine was “mid”, your bias shows. Southern and SWAC bands put their instruments in the grass to dance and look like the keystone cops when they “fast” or “double time” March, yet you call the 💯‘s dance routine “mid”. @KBThaBandhead thank you for responding. Let me first say that I appreciate your channel and perspective. My disagreement with your assessment has nothing to do with my support of your channel. I love the way the next generation is using social media platforms to bring attention to HBCU band culture and HBCUs in general. FAMU will always be slightly condescending to the loud/battle tradition of the SWAC because its history and tradition is longer and more respected in spaces within and outside the HBCU band culture; even globally (Sudler, Paris, Dr Foster). Now, I personally feel some of your opinions are reasonable, and I agree. I would love to see FAMU get a dance squad and focus more on marching cleaner and return to the intensity and snap and drive in the " fast march/rattler" that made them famous and brought such excellence and attention to ALL HBCU bands. I remember those days with such pride in the early 70s into the 80s. I will add that nobody still performs with such symphonic precision and quality of sound during the concert selection as does the 💯 ..thank you for your contribution to the culture. Bro you gotta go back and FAMU archives before the incident that got they program shut down FAMU marching 100 was THEE BAND!!! marching over 400 members and 40 to 50 tubas it was the prime of FAMU with some of the best shows ever that 06-2011 era imma Spartan and I’m giving props…this new 100 under Chip is not as swaggy as Dr White version of the 100 but we can say that about all bands tbh.

They're building their own legacy and doing a great job separating themselves from pre-2011. They are also MUCH better musicians. Confidence will come with more time. Regardless, no one is touching them with the exception of Southern.

I don’t think it’s Chip. Although Dr. white was the head during that 400 piece, 50 tuba era, chip was the main one working us out on the field and in the band room. I think the the restrictions that are still placed on the band to this day as a result of the incident a decade ago are what’s keeping the 100 from being exactly where they were pre 2011. But even with that wing said, they are still doing great imo. Going off of the last cpl years.
