Professional musician reacts to Bandmaid's Kanami Tōno playing another live solo with band-maid. We've got some comparisons to the last solo I looked at ( • BAND MAID Kanami Tono ... ), analysis, lesson, licks and general breakdown. Some open string licks, more bluesy inspired things and a good whack of rock n roll in the mix! What was your favourite part?

Kanami-sama always did these same little Jimi/Jimmy/Carlos riffs before the band played 'Moratorium', though I think it's been a while since she last did it. I love seeing her zoning out in her own space and playing these riffs and the rest of the band seem to like it too. MISA and Miku often give her a pat on the head to bring her back down to Earth. I don't know where Kanami's head is at when she does this but I suspect that it may be an overwhelming feeling of finally doing what she dreamed of when she was playing piano from 3 to 17, before she picked up a guitar - being a fecking Rock star, strutting her stuff out on stage and just letting rip (though to a pattern). She's said herself that she took up guitar to do just that and now she is that Rock goddess she visualised being one day.

Totally, it'll probably be a slight out of body feeling you get from bigger gigs also a bit more nervous because it's more free form than her usual approach I'd imagine?

@@JbfMusicGuitar I imagine it takes a lot of control to create compositions of such high quality and layered complexity so this is her one chance to, as you say, free-form a little. Miku has had the same look on her face recently on their USA tour when she sings and plays guitar on Sayonakidori; the 'oh-god-it's-actually-happening-I'm-actually-fronting-a-superb-Rock-band...just like I always dreamed of!'.

This is on tour in Germany, the Marshal is Miku's rented backline amp, Kanami has a Mesa Boogie (not sure if it is her normal triple rectifier 150W again as not her personal amp) but you can see it briefly at the end of the clip

On their latest stream from Tokyo Garden Theatre on January 9, Kanami, Akane and Misa had an awesome new intro to No God that would give this a run for the money. And it was amazing, but in that Oscar Peterson fashion, it sounds improvised but it was worked out so it was super tight and well rehearsed. I hope that video makes it to their official KZfaq channel.

Great stuff as ever Jack. I was in a lot of suspense finding out whether or not Kanami can play well 😉. In all seriousness, given that I think of her as a songwriter first - and one with extreme attention to detail - it's nice to hear her playing something that's partly improvised.

I know right? I was worried we'd never be able to answer that question! That's also a really good take and also I'd agree that there's something a bit special when folk start to improv a bit more- saying this as someone who generally likes to hear solos live as they are on the record!

They used backline equipment rentals in Europe. Marshall would have been more common in Europe than American made amps. Kanami in full kaiju mode. Awesome

Back when, Kanami used an EVH 5150 and Miku used a Marshall. Then Kanami got picked up by Mesa and Miku inherited the 5150.

Not quite. Kanami started with Marshall (to 2016) then Blackstar (briefly 2016) then Mesa Boogie (2016 to today). Kanami never used EVH. Miku used various amps before her EVH (2019) such as Divided by 13 RSA31 and amps by Musicman. They did use Marshalls in studio settings sometimes. Miku used hired Marshalls when touring abroad which is what you are seeing here (it's Miku's amp, Kanami was playing through her Mesa here).

That Marshal is Miku's I think. She uses them I have seen in the 2018 tour a lot, but seems to be steady with EVH now.. I think? Kanami uses that 5150 when available. I dont think Ive seen her with a Marshal in a very long time if at all. BTW, BIG balls with the thumbnail... can Kanami Tono solo? haha. I had to laugh. Love ya mate. Lick 5 at 11:00 you mentioned Santana. That's right on target. In fact, just in case no one else mentioned to you, that footage is from their Paris show. On that same tour, in Hamburg, during Kanami's solo, in the middle of that "Lick 5", she busted out Santana's "Europa". Here's the clip I queued up for you 40 seconds into the solo: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/aMh6i6l3ptfNlok.html . Watch Akane's shocked reaction. Hilarious. Clearly Kanami improvised that one.

A professional guitarist friend of mine dismissed these solos as Spinal Tap. I think that was extremely cruel. I am a very great fan of Kanami, her compositions and her playing. I thought some time ago that she is a musical savant. It would explain her dippy off stage persona but these days I am more inclined to believe she is highly intelligent and plays with us with her various persona. I don't think she does anything without considerable prior thought and practice. She obviously has a great number of techniques and she gives a great impression of being lost in her music complete with wounded seagull dance moves but I doubt these solos are an expression of a stream of consciousness. I have t say I am greatly impressed with your ability to so quickly duplicate extracts of her solos. Respect.

I mean I unironically love Spinal Tap, like I think their songs are genuinely good (hilarious lyrics aside) so I'd still take that as a compliment, lol! Cheers mate appreciate that, music is really just a sort of language so it's just like picking out things you recognise

They are all highly intelligent and play up their personas on stage and when interviewed. Anyone who ever gets the chance to watch their Line Cube Shibuya World Domination DVD/BluRay; there is a documentary on there showing them rehearsing for the concert. Whilst still clearly having fun with each other, they are a lot more serious there; Kanami takes control of the rehearsals and loses her dreamy 10-year-old in a 30-year-old behaviour and seems a lot less obsessed with Saiki, and Miku forgets to say her "Po"s unless talking directly to the documentary camera crew. But I think we all knew that...
