Reel Around the Fountain: the first Smiths song I heard in where I actually knew I was listening to the Smiths. It absolutely floored me (and still does) as it was like nothing I had ever heard before. The line, "people see no worth in you but I do" is probably one of the most powerful lyrics written in music.
@MattPuxty6 жыл бұрын
It’s a great track but how could you never know you were listening to The Smiths? Morrissey’s voice is too unique to confuse. I think I know what you mean though. Hand That Rocks The Cradle is a bit like that too. A very Smiths sounding song.

Great track, although I agreed with Morrissey when he mentions in his autobiography that a lot of the sound of those tracks on the first album was dimmed down from the way they sounded live. Open Spotify, find Hatful of Hollow, and find I think it’s the John Peel session of Reel Around The Fountain. Sounds excellent.
@paulbrown58392 жыл бұрын
Do you guys realise the 3 songs you mention are all about paedophilia? "Reel around the fountain" - 'you took a child and you made him old', "Hand that rocks the cradle" - 'climb upon my knee sonny boy, although you're only 3 sonny boy...and your mother she must never know' , "Suffer little children"-that does not need to be explained really, does it. Great band, but when you are humming those particular tunes think about the lyrics. Great great band but a few of the topics he includes are too dark, for me anyway.

@@MarcioSilva-ssiillvvaa The Smiths were a post punk band. Punk and post punk bands inspired many of the artists interviewed. Sorry. In a general sense, a punk doesn't like to support mainstream economics or cliched fashion trends...so maybe that's why many of their hairstyles look like crap (or as if their band mates cut their hair.) 1. You have got to be joking if you're wanting to get into a war over music genres. 2. Learn to dissect the meaning behind a lighthearted comment and quit taking yourself so seriously.

"let me get my hands on your mammary glands" is one of the most quintessentially "rock"' lyrics ever, rivaling but not equalling "she'll make a dead man cum" from mick jagger, but for reasons I cannot explain it is "death of a disco dancer" to which I keep returning. The drum and guitar build in the last half of the song capture me. "panic" and "unhappy birthday" along with the aforementioned "handsome devil" also. I dunno, what difference does it make?

If you're a big Johnny Marr fan then I can see why you wouldn't like Frankly Mr Shankly. But, it's some of the best lyrics ever written, 'sometimes I feel more fulfilled making Christmas cards with the mentally ill.' I mean how can you not love that line.
