Avenged Sevenfold... they slightly alter their sound with literally every album and improve greatly while still keeping their heavy metal roots, they've always experimented with their sound, and in 2016 they released their BEST album to date, The Stage, which is definitely progressive metal with traditional heavy metal at heart that still manages to keep a sense of mainstream accessibility, hence why they're still one of the biggest metal bands of this century... in 7 albums A7X went from metalcore, to heavy metal, to a mix of metal, hard rock, country, and some cinematic Tim Burton-esque song, all on their self-titled, to a classic metal sound most reminiscent of black album-era Metallica, to progressive metal... they may not have entirely changed genres and all but they are definitely extremely versatile and obviously talented as hell and I'm honestly anxious to hear what they put out next

I think something that makes BMTH successful is that they are constantly changing their sound. They did after their first album. So when it keeps happening, it’s not such a surprise to fans like it is with other bands. It’s kinda expected at this point.

Avenged Sevenfold is another one. When City of Evil came out a lot of their fans didn't like the lack of screaming/metalcore of the first 2 albums but they ended up getting a lot of fans and recognition from the style change and have changed it further with classic metal and prog metal albums

I think Opeth is a fertile target for this topic. I like they later rock stuff, but daaaaaaamn do some fans hate it.

It would be interesting to see a study on bands who diversify their sound versus ones that don't and how that correlates to popularity. I would agree with your hunch that it probably doesn't work most the time.

I appreciate bands that change their sound, to me it crates a whole new window into the heart and soul of a band or group and that is what music is about! Connecting on different levels adds more solid connection emotionally and times change bands get older and can not necessarily play or sing as heavy as before so you get the mad/angry and the chill/peaceful or vise versa some bands do get better all in all it is really awesome to see unfold for most bands.

one thing why it works for BMTH is because theyre genuine. its clearly the music they want to write and you can tell. for example MMF just seems to be a bad attempt to sell out. also BMTH always have this BMTH twist to things, their imagery, the lyrics, the videos, the overall themes are always BMTH. it all makes sense and I think thats because oli sykes is such a great creative director.

Had to come back here just to comment - I think we need to tread lightly on the Metallica discussion. Obviously Finn - you're the GOAT and did a magnificent job with the video. We've all argued endlessly about Metallica's turn when they went to the Black Album, Load, and ReLoad...and I think collectively now - in 2020 - those albums are regarded and received well by metal and Metallica fans...granted although, hated at the initial time of their release. To this amazing music discussion and very loaded conversation...I'll say this: Finn, how was Metallica supposed to survive if they didn't evolve? The Black Album by far catapulted the band to rich millionaire megastars, and did more for them in the mainstream than Kill Em All, Justice for All, Lightning, or Puppets could have ever dreamed. They needed to follow-up in a way that didn't depart too much from the Black Album with Load and ReLoad. More importantly however - think about the timing. The 90's was full-on Grunge with Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Red Hot Chili Peppers, STP, etc. and pop-punk with Green Day, Offspring, and Blink and eventually Nu Metal...where was the long-hair, black leather jacket, tight jeans, and dark boots look and sound of Thrash Metal supposed to go? It would have been very dated for Metallica to continue being Thrash. Look at Anthrax, Megadeth, and Slayer...they all stayed in their era and lane and non evolved to Metallica's level of megastardom and "Godfathers of Metal" status. Also...at that time, I remember Metallica co-headlining or headlining alongside popular acts dominating the airwaves like Linkin Park, Limp Bizkit, and Slipknot. So in a way...Metallica had to ditch the outdated sound and look in order to survive. True, they turned their back on their original fanbase and Thrash sound...but nowadays, most look back at Black/Load/ReLoad with a positive outlook. If it weren't for those albums...if the Thrash sound just continued through...would Metallica have survived and been crowned the Gods of Metal and granted untouchable immunity? Everything has to evolve to survive...our favorite bands are no different. Metallica still sells out stadiums around the world within minutes...can other bands say the same? All these years later...

Eh when it comes to Metallica I feel like Load/Reload had some decent songs that seem to have gained a bit more respect since time has passed, and even St. Anger had some cool enough ideas that were at least listenable. Their S&M album doesn't seem to be talked about a lot, but I feel like it was pretty fantastic and an interesting take on some of their best songs.

Part 2 pls. A couple of bands I would like to see covered: Parkway Drive: After 4 albums of metalcore, they went in a different direction, with lead vocalist Winston McCall stating that they've "outgrown metalcore". While most of their core fanbase can't stand their last two albums (I think they're decent but not as good as their early material), their new songs are WAY more popular (8 out of their top 10 on Spotify are from the past 2 albums). Avenged Sevenfold: Altho you've done a video on them already, would be interesting to hear abt how their fans reacted to all their changes (personally, I think Nightmare is their best album, with City of Evil being a close 2nd). Paramore: While I don't like anything they've done after Brand New Eyes, their newer songs seem to do rly well. My theory is that they gained more of a mainstream following with their self-titled album which more than makes up for the ppl they might have alienated.

It’s funny that I’ve avoided the ‘still going through puberty’ bands as much as the ‘cookie monster’ bands...but simply by understanding Metallica and Marilyn Manson a bit I can understand this WWE band...that I never heard of till this video. Don't forget about THRICE! They keep getting better with every album and went from skatepunk to hardcore to post hardcore to Radioheadcore

The big one for me is In Flames. They have so far changed their style three times. From 1994 - 2000 they were a pioneering Melodic Death Metal band, then from 2001 - 2010 they played more mainstream alternative metal/metalcore with a mix of screams and clean singing, and finally from 2012 - present they've moved to a more rockier sound with even more clean singing & less harsh screams. There's barely any metal left to their sound outside of a few songs and they're music is a far cry from what it was when they original started playing. I still enjoy all their albums but their 1994 - 2000 output was head and shoulders above anything they've released since.

Why every reviewer likes Code Orange - Underneath: The record has range. Band is drawing influences from Merzbow, Skinny puppy, Converge, All out war, and grunge? Those are like, snobby underground tastemakers favorite things. Code orange definitely brings their take on all of those influences together, and has made something wholly unique, but the sound is still an amalgamation of things that heavy/dark music reviewers hold in very high regard, that the general public might not necessarily be aware of.

I'm early af and you're probably going to say this, but I'm walking the dog so...I feel like the bands that are successful in changing their sound is because they're truly committed to the change and often are playing with their sound, whereas changing style specifically to be radio friendly...idk, you can hear the difference.

Load and Reload and great albums with great songs. Metallica makes good songs, it doesn’t matter if is different. It doesn’t have to be trash to be good. Hard Rock and Rock are just as good.

One of the things that bring me the horizon did was gradually change their style as opposed to just going from count your blessings to amo and I think that made the eventual release of amo way more digestible. Great video fin, I think a band that changed their style and pissed off a few fans but took them to that Headliner status was Parkway Drive.

Would love a part 2! I hate when bands blindside me with a change in sound and I hate it at first, but then realize I was being close minded and end up loving it.

Definitely do a part 2 and definitely include Opeth. After many albums of very much their own unique sound, they made a drastic change for their album Heritage. They explained why they did it and basically said: We're not going to do the old stuff anymore. We're not turning out backs on it, we'll play it live but any new album is not going to sound like that old style anymore. Like it or don't, whatever.

I feel like for a band to succeed in changing their sound it has to actually be something they want to do because they actually want to change their sound and not because they feel like it will reach a wider audience but I don’t have much knowledge on the music industry so I might be 100% wrong but it’s just how I believe it works

the way Arctic Monkeys changed their sound over the years is interesting. i personally like it a lot, but the majority of their fans rather listen to the old british indie stuff.

I'd say with Code Orange, as a fan, they have evolved as musicians. Once they changed to just Code Orange the industrial/edm chopping of their music really set them off. I think they were very influential and not very many bands sound like them, and due to the hip hop influence of their music they stand out from the hardcore scene more than most bands. Plus they're great at promoting the band. They had the deal with WWE, they done the first live stream concert to an empty venue. In my eyes they are pioneers, and will only continue to get bigger at this point.

Great video as always Finn. Love your channel. And as much as it pains me to say it I agree with your assessment of TDWP. I happen to have loved most of their changes through 818 to Transit Blues, but I'll admit The Act took me quite a while to come around to. Now I appreciate and love the album for what it is, but it's completely fair to say they chnag d their sound quite a bit. Then again I'll also admit I'm one of those ride or die fans with my favourite bands and TDWP are far from the only one to change their sound over the years. Hell Thrice has played soo many different genres it makes my head spin and I still love em. Same with the wonder years growing out of sad boy pop punk.

What you said about Miley Cyrus reminded me about a metal band I was in back in '09. We covered her song "Start All Over." We did it to get people riled up, but we ended up getting asked to play that song a lot at shows. Sometimes doing the unsafe thing is the best thing.

I feel like I'm the only person who doesn't see why everyone hated the black album so much. It's not as thrashy as their previous stuff but there's still some great songs with bangin riffs on it. However load and reload do suck with the exception of a few songs

I really liked this video, especially the part when you mention TDWP which is one of my fav metalcore bands ever. I have mixed feelings regarding their last album because I love all their previous work except The Act. BTW, Finn thanks for creating excellent content in your channel.

You did not mention my favorite band Celtic Frost! They were originally the earliest form of Black Metal as the band Hellhammer, similar to Venom with lyrics about Satan, but then changed their sound to be more early atmospheric or avant-garde black metal with occult references and adding more ethereal vocals and focusing on nature leading to them changing their name to Celtic Frost! Now Celt Frost for the most part had that early Thrash sound like Venom, but had ethereal vocals being a little bit more like Bathory, but on the late 80 s, ; my favorite band Celtic Frost released Cold Lake, which pretty much was a great glam metal album. Thomas Gabriel Fisher/ Warrior looked like a Viking in spandex for the music video to Theo single Cherry Orchards and got on Headbanger’s Ball! The fans hated the album , and Celtic Frost hated the album, but the critics and the record label loved the album. I personally love the album, but I love actual glam metal, but can’t stand glam pop rock. Thankfully, Martin Eric Ain. , who sadly already died , hated the album so much that the next album was a return to their early avant-garde black metal or early atmospheric black metal sound, and everyone loved them again except all of the new critics that loved them and the record label and Headbanger’s Ball until 2006 when they released Monotheist, which to me sounds like a precursor to what some of these newer mor atmospheric black metal bands are doing now. I remember watching them on Headbangers Bsll 2! I missed them for Headbangers Ball in 88, but I did watch them on VH1classic Metal Maniacs, and Dying God Coming internet o Human Flesh on Fuse’s Uranium and MTV’s Headbanger’s Ball.

Another solid video. Would love to see something about AFI. Long career with a history of not only switching their sound but being trend setters. Would be a really cool video.

Code Orange is just good, man. Their music consistently gets better, heavier, and more diverse. They never get boring.

One band that seemed to survive a major transition thing well is Thrice. They had a major shift with the fourth record (Vhiessu) that had a huge back lash, but over time seems to now be regarded as their best work. Its weird for me, because I used to book local hardcore bands in 2005 and most of them were in love with the 2nd album illusion of safety (metal meets which skate punk) and hated that 4th album. They seemed to also have benefited from taking a 5 year break, where a lot of their older fans now accepting the post-vhiessu thrice sound.
