I love Talad Noi area and have walked around there often. You didn’t visit the old Chinese house with a pool in front, the pool is used by the owner to teach diving. He and my mom were trained by US army diving instructors in the 1970’s and now its part of his business. The post office was also the location of the telephone company, and I remember as a youth in the 1960’s going there with my parents to call the USA from a wooden telephone booth, this was how you made international calls in the day…The Post office was also how you received mail by having a postal box, it wasn’t delivered to your home. So residents in Bangkok had GPO box addresses and as a little kid I was always one to retrieve the mail….fond memories of old BKK

There are many Thai desserts that have been influenced by Portugal. by Thao Thong Kip Ma (Marie Kirma) such as Thong Yod, Thong Yib, Foi Thong, Thong Plu, Thong Prong, Khanom Ping, Luk Chub, custard, Mo Kaeng, Ba Bin, Khanom Khai

Another line of historians believe that Portuguese confectionery came before Thao Tongki. But Thao Thongkima was the one who made delicious desserts and served as the wife of Chao Phraya Wichaiyen, who had a great position in the Ayutthaya period. and is half-Portuguese-Japanese who fled from the Japanese authorities for not supporting Christianity in the country. and immigrated with the Japanese community or Japanese village as a result of trade and religious persecution in Japan. for fear of expanding the Church's influence on the Japanese government.

Lert Samantao is the origin of the word Lert Samantan. means very beautiful and very nice, It was an old word in those days.

The mansion of the French embassy still exist, it's behind the modern building, facing the Chao Praya in fact which was the main entrance back in the days.

One of my favorite areas too. Thanks to your Shangri-La video a few years back I took advantage of the special they had going on and spent 4 wonderful days exploring that area. I had always wanted to stay at the Shangli-la for more than 32 years. Finally was able to afford it at that time. I think it was my best time ever in BKK over the years. Thanks for all your content.

Great tip about the duck restaurant Chris, I had no idea it was there. If there's one rule about restaurants in Thailand, if there's an old lady out the front calling the shots you know the food's good!

This is the neighborhood that I know the best. It sure has changed from 30 years ago. New Road had great antique shops by the Grand Post Office. Most are gone. I used to stay at the Trocadero which was the first high-rise hotel the the 1930s. It had a fun disco in the lobby for a couple years. The vdo starts near the bronze statuary store where I had several large pieces shipped home. Going down New Road the other direction across from Robertsons Department store are many vegetarian restaurants. And there are 2 piers to get onto a river ferry, one close to where the vdo starts and one by the Oriental Hotel. Thank you for your wonderful videos!

Some background on the Rue de Brest (Charoenkrung 36): On 18 June, 1686, a vessel carrying King Narai the Great's ambassadors to Louis XIV arrived off the French port of Brest. They departed for Siam/Thailand from the same port in the spring of 1687. In the interval, their embassy created a sensation that was talked about in Europe for decades. In Brest today, there is a Rue de Siam that jointly commemorates the embassy of 1686/87 with the Rue de Brest shown here.

2:30 And to think that the "Som Tum Malako" (ส้มตำมะละกอ) or Green Papaya Salad has most of its ingredients introduced to Thailand by those early farang: Chilis, tomatoes, papaya all originated in South America and it was those early farang (Portuguese) that brought them to Thailand probably because they also had a connection to South America.

One definitely takes a step back in time when walking along Charoen Krung Road. So many old buildings and the architecture is fantastic. Of course, given the amount of development that has taken place throughout the city, there aren't too many areas like this. One definitely gets a feel for what old Bangkok used to be like and one can try to imagine the amount of commerce that would have taken in that area parallel to the river. There is so much to explore in the back streets of Talad Noi. When we were there in November, we stumbled across this antique map and print shop (wish I could remember the name) right on Charoen Krung, run by this older lady who spoke good English. Definitely worth a visit. One could spend days in this area and still not see everything. Thanks to Chris for highlighting this historical area of a truly amazing city.
