Australia had own the toss & elected to bat first and a total of 249 for five seemed more than adequate when Bangladesh were only 81 for three after 25 overs.
Mohammad Ashraful striking 11 fours in a dazzling, run-a-ball innings. He kissed the pitch after reaching a maiden one-day hundred with a single off McGrath.
No Welsh try at the nearby Millennium Stadium was ever greeted with a louder roar, and the collapse almost everyone expected never came. "This is probably one of the biggest upsets in the history of cricket, and my worst defeat as captain," said Ponting.
The coup de grace, however, was delivered by Aftab Ahmed. With seven needed for victory, it had all come down to the final over, delivered by Jason Gillespie. One blow put the contest beyond doubt - a mighty smear sailed clean over midwicket for six, to cue the most crazy scenes of jubilation ever witnessed at Sophia Gardens. Bangladesh had earned the respect of the cricketing world, and Australia's aura of invincibility was shattered.

When Ashraful was celebrating his century, Gilchrist was seen in background applauding. This is an wonderful lesson for us. No doubt Gilchrist is among the great players of modern chricket. And all these great players have one common attitude. They are highly competitive. yet they never hesitate to approciate a good performance whether it is from their team mates or from the opponents. This attitude made them not only good players but also great sportsman and role model for the youngstars. We all loved tendulkar, rahul dravid, shoaib akhter, shangakara, ricky pointing, vaughan and all the other greats irrespective of country. In today's cricket, we have so many dashing stylist highly skilled players, but none of them are great sportsman. In the name of rivalry, media and fans all are making the game toxic. Even it feels like sometimes the players are ready to break stamps on each other's head if ICC allowed it.😅

I was in Australia when that match was played in Cardiff. I still can remember the headline of one Australian daily the next morning... "The most humiliating defeat in our sport history" coz in those days, Australian team was almost invincible. But, who knows, that defeat to Bangladesh was a bad omen for Australia, coz just after that natwest odi series, Australia lost the Ashes series to England after so many yrs. Great memories..
