One of the more frustrating things I have been learning while aquascaping is that substrate flattens over time. This is really irritating, but there are a few things that can be done to help minimize and prevent this from happening. Substrate supports are a massive help! In this video, I show you how to support your hardscape and make your own substrate supports to prevent flattening and erosion of your substrate for long term success.

Because I rescape my tanks about every six months, I'm always looking for ways to cut costs. Instead of a media bag, I use a shower pouf. Unravel it and you have a lot cheap netting. I double up the netting and fill it with expanded clay pellets. Secure it shut using zipties. You have to search for the kinds that sink, but in general, they're very cheap. The clay is good for the plants to get their roots in, which helps maintain the fight against creep. Getting the roots locked into something solid is really important. If the plants aren't anchored, as the slope decays, the plants will actually migrate with the soil.

I'm excited to see what you end up doing with this tank. I really love the nano tanks and the nano livestock that you choose to go along with them.

Great video, I never thought to build structural support for my substrate. I haven't kept an aquarium in over 10 years, and am looking to get back into the hobby in the near-ish future. I think I'll have to build a corrugated plastic support system, the wheels are already turning.
