Banks own many of Dallas' low-income, high-crime apartments - and they're rewarded for it

Banks are required to lend to low-income borrowers. But, instead of loans, regulators incentivize banks to invest in housing built in areas of crime and blight.

The City officials are the ones who approve and sign off on the properties. Why not interview them about this?

Because it's not the banks fault that crime follows a certain demographic.

I do not understand the point of this story. Don’t build housing around other low income housing? Or low income housing should be owned by smaller investment firms?
@pst6441
@pst6441 Ай бұрын
The point is to build low income housing where families can have access to resources like good schools, community centers, or job opportunities. Or invest in the areas where there are lots of low income housing by providing mortgages or loans for people to purchase homes and improve the neighborhoods through home ownership, home improvements, and property taxes. They’re profiting off investing in low income housing but not improving the neighborhood leaving low income families with not much opportunity to grow and thrive. Basically, it’s very one-sided and leaning more in favor of the banks not the community.

What should the banks really do? If low income people can't buy houses they have to oxide some how.

What they should do? Did You not listen to the report? They're not building as they should be to begin with. You might be a bot though. I see You have multiple comments, hour after hour.

@@Eusantdac they can't build in an area thats expensive when they have low rent. It wouldn't make sense. Because your taxes would be paying for their taxes in a wealthy area. Instead of making a big deal about all this. Make a big deal about helping low income people.

I have no idea what You are trying to say. Look at these scenarios though: a teacher who works in a poor area and then goes home in the suburbs, or a police officer who works in a poor neighborhood and takes all his money from a well paying job to the suburbs? Poor areas always lose that way because the decent jobs there mainly go to people from somewhere else. So mixing income levels wouldn't be bad from that perspective.

I'm saying if banks buy outside the poor areas. Its too expensive. So the government is paying for higher rents for the low i come people and your taxes are going to be used for that. Do you really think the city wants crime in the better areas.

Why would you loan money to people who will most likely not pay it back? Makes no sense. Banks, like any business, want to make money not lose it.

Agree. I don't get why people in the video tried to blame the bank for the death of the kid. It's the criminal's fault.

This may be 8 months late,... just saw this story,... but you're exactly right. So the banks at the government's urging and at tax payer expense invest millions to build nice apartment buildings in poor neighborhoods and these people are complaining about it? I guess tax payers should stop being forced to build nice apartments in low income hoods. I guess that'll make eveyone happy. It'll make this tax payer happy.

Lessee if we have this straight,... the banks provide subsidized housing for the poor (no not at the expense of the poor as the pastor said, at the expense of the tax payer) and these people are complaining about it as if the banks have at the expense of the tax payer have done something bad?????? Do we have this about right??? How about the people representing them and the poor complaining about brand new subsisized housing stop destroying their own neighborhoods with crime and lack of care for their own nieghborhoods? How about straightening up your own back yard before demanding these people who have shown not to care about their own neighborhoods be injected and dragging crime with them into neighborhoods that do care?
