The DeAngelo Williams situation is so awful, the fact that they would not let a player who lost many loved ones wear some simple eye black to commemorate them is baffling. Shame on the league for that.

The NFL let LaDamian Tomlinson wear a tinted face shield for his whole career. For one reason. Going back to his days at TCU he has a sensitivity to glaring light that would cause migraines. That had been documented for three years before he even enter the league so they gave him an exemption.

One of the things my linebacker couch tried to teach us was to read the quarterback's eyes to know where the ball is going. Or as a DB is you can read the receiver's eyes you will know when the ball is in range and time it to make a play. FYI: I was never good enough or quick enough to do either. But we had guys that could.

The banning the overbuilt facemask seemed counterintuitive at the time as it protected against eye injuries and stopped facemask calls. Still clueless to this day why they didn’t go forward with that design and just figure out a way to lighten the build.

Most of these rules are fueled by the NFL's greed, but jewelry ... I've played several different sportsover my lifetime and have never seen a single one that allowed watches, rings, earrings, necklaces, any kind of jewelry at all. Usually because it's a potential injury to themselves or others. Getting scraped by someone's watch or having an earing ripped out ... ouch.

I do believe that a large part of this comes down to limiting player empowerment. By not allowing for individuality in their gear, the players become much less distringuishable from their peers and it become harder for them to stand out, making them seem more interchangeable and less valuable as individual contributors in the scope of team success. This leads to less bargaining power and leverage in contract negotations over time.

@@ICDUMPEPL By the NFL rulebook, hair is considered part of the uniform. Meaning, if I wanted to grab a RB by his dreads and swing him around like a party toy, it is PERFECTLY LEGAL. Now, he and the linemen are going to use you as a hand puppet a few plays later, but it is legal.
@ICDUMPEPL
@ICDUMPEPL 9 ай бұрын
@@drak3y Great story, but you've totally missed the point. Again, the player with the long hair is not only doing something that is stupid in terms of risking his own health, but is also putting all of the other players on the field in danger. If you've ever played football, you are aware how things can get wrapped around the screws that affix one's mask to his helmet. So again, if a large strand of hair or dread gets caught in between another player's mask and helmet, and if it occurs when one or both are moving at high speed, one or both may be subjected to the same type of force that is experienced by people who are being dropped through the floor of a scaffold, with one end of a rope around the neck, and the other end tied to a gallows pole.

I remember way back in the day player use to use double sided sticky tape to tape their jerseys to their pads & lightly spray Pam on their jerseys . See their jerseys are made of polyester which is already slippery it just made it harder to hold on to & the sticky tape would make it so the jersey couldn’t be ripped from the pads making it harder to grab , smart ideal , even their pants are polyester so imagine the possibility at that time .

All these rules are in the contract players sign. They are paid millions. Every single one of these rules, makes perfect sense. Just because you get away with it for a while, doesn’t make it acceptable. Just because your accessory sends a nice message, doesn’t mean it’s not against the rules. The fact there are so many people breaking these rules, intentionally, and for their own momentary gain, tells you exactly why the rules exist. Imagine how out of control this would get if the NFL just allowed players to do what they want? With all these rules and fines, there are athletes constantly trying to get away with breaking them. It would be out of control so fast and the game would quickly turn into players trying to “one-up” each other, or prioritizing “There brand,” whenever possible.

Some of these, like the situation with DeAngelo Williams seem harsh. But most are more than reasonable. Like, oh it's so sad that for a few hours a week, while you're at work, you aren't allowed to totally express yourself. How cruel and terrible! Give me a break. And it's not about self expression. Players do this to make money. NFL games are seen by tens of millions of people, and that can jump into the hundreds of millions for playoff/SB games. You don't think companies would love to have players wearing their products and getting that free marketing in front of those millions of eyes? And you don't think players cash in on that? So to me it's real simple. You're at work. Wear your work clothes. You'll survive. You have plenty of time to express yourself or whatever when you're not working.

I don't care what color cleats a player wears. It doesn't affect my enjoyment of the game. However, think of the word "uniform", and it's definition. Many people must follow rules concerning dress at work. Players are paid a lot of money to play a game. They don't like not being able to do whatever they want. How important is this really? It all seems petty and silly to me.

It is mainly about branding and image, which can be worth a lot of money. Like how top NBA players can earn more money though ads and brands the own/ have a stake in. The NFL doing this rules are half about safety and half making players more dependent on the NFL for income and make them more docile.

Exactly, players want money and attention, but they have to realize they are on The NFLs stage and the players are puppets, and for one they need to be more professional about the term uniform...

Now I think a few of these are silly but personally I do appreciate the uniformity. Like I don't want to see 22 walking bill boards on the field. I think there should be some leeway with shoes and some minor things. But one thing that makes most American Sports so nice is the lack of sponsor ships on the players. Usually it is just the manufacture of the jersey/apparel. And a few of these like OBJ watch are clearly him pushing the boundaries.
