In 2013, International Judo Federation (IJF) made a controversial decision to ban all leg grabbing throws in their competitions. It is believed that the main reason was that they wanted to make Judo a more dynamic and spectator-friendly sport. A lot of people like this decision and a lot of people hate it. It doesn't matter what side you are on, you can't deny that competitive Judo lost some impressive throws. So here is a compilation with some amazing throws that involve leg grabbing.

None of Teddy Rinner's losses in senior competition have been due to a leg grabbing tehcnique... Look at Teddy Riner's losses during the 2007~2010 period, none of them were due to leg grabs. What the IJF should have done to address the issues of the 2008 Olympics: only allow one hand below the belt. That would mean we'd still have huge throws like Kata Guruma, Te Guruma, and hand assisted Sode Tsuri Komi Goshi- while removing the type of Judo that led up to the rule changes. Think about it, most of the throws in this video are done with only one hand below the belt.

In February of 2013 wrestling was voted out of the Olympics. This is well documented. The reason for the rule change was the IOC wanted stronger differentiation between the sports of Judo and Wrestling. The IOC came to both sports with a list of changes that were to be implemented. Judo said ok. Wrestling said "get bent" and wrestling was axed from the Olympics. When wrestling came crawling back willing to implement the changes the IOC required; they were reinstated. This is all well known and we'll documented.

I was a Judo athlete for more than 10 years, these rules only hinder the beauty of the sport, if they forgot that Judo is a FIGHT modality, there will always be traumatic blows or that can cause some injury! Techniques like Kata Guruma, Morote Gari, and Kibisu Gaeshi can now no longer be used. Soon it will only be allowed to hold the gi, and the opponent to win will have to ask the opponent to please throw himself on the ground, as no throws will be allowed!

It is the fireman’s throw from wrestling. Kano was making Judo into the MMA of its time in the 1800s. Now judo is just an Olympic game, a shadow of its former self.

My favourite throw was T Guruma shame they have banned them can,t understand why.

They would have done sports, competition and fairness a bigger favor by allowing another "drop" to point once you loaded up the opponent instead of a drop on the back. Those flips with the opponent on your shoulders look spectacular, but my guess was always that they fear that someone lands on the neck or otherwise badly and cause major injuries. Single and double leg shooting is an easy, fast and in now many sports used takedown - to ban that is hilarious.

All the stupid rule changes are the reason I gave up judo many years ago as a 2nd dan. It's now no longer so exciting and to me, is quite boring to watch nowadays.

In theory these techniques are still useful and perfectly legal in BJJ. The problem is BJJ practitioners’ underdeveloped standing game as a result of the pointing system which rewards takedowns poorly and strongly groundwork-oriented mentality.

I only recently got aware of the tournament aspects and its rules of judo. I simply never cared about it, assuming it would be something realistic. Then, a few days back I watched a judo tournament for the first time and I could not follow any decisions made. I did not get why someone got penalties, I did not get why someone scored... How can this be more spectator friendly? There was also nearly no ground fighting. Which - contrary to some BJJ fanboys - is a big part of judo as a sport. So maybe - to make it truly spectator friendly they should drop all that point awarding nonsense and have submission matches instead. My humble opinion on the matter.

Someone told me a joke long time ago, the martial art will be more powerful after it becomes a "sport". I think Judo probably initiated this joke and added a good punch line to finish this joke

As adicional context (and so wrestling braindeads can know about It), wrestling was being dropped as a PERMANENT sport in the olympic games. The discusión was made around the same time the leg grabs were banned. That being said, its possible that we dont see wrestling in the 2028 olympics. Amplíe time to adapt was given until the new generation continued their olympic career.

The olympics need judo not the other way around... You cant adapt the whole sport only to stay in the olympics - at some point its not the same sport anymore 🤷

The only thing that improved is that you don't see people bulldoze each other from the mats anymore trying to go for a leg takedown. Otherwise I just don't see it.

That's why they should have made it that you can only have one hand below the belt. You'd have awesome throws like Kata Guruma and Te Guruma, and get rid of the mindless rugby tackles.

As most agree Judo got ruined by these cowardly and/or greedy for cash (entertainment over practicality) ideas and the martial arts cut from judo was so useful it became one of the most successful martial arts in the modern era Brazilian Jiu Jitsu… it seems bjj will eventually go full circle combing wrestling judo Sambo and ne waza to become good judo again ( that’s at least in adcc where takedowns matter more)

I believe it was to screw us up Cubans. The Cuban judo school took a lot from wrestling. They trained in contiguous areas in Cerro Pelado.
