Flash works with any ETB/LTB effect, while Hulk is the primary combo,there is definitely plenty of other cards to take it's spot (Just less of an instant win). Reanimator with blue makes it so that you can empty bombs that you draw into (So like an Entomb from hand) while still getting all the value at end of the opponent's turn. You could run stuff like Atraxa to draw a bunch or even something like Woodfall Primus to landlock your opponent (And get a body to the board).

Fixing Hulk instead of Flash is a weird impulse. If Flash were legal, you would need to police all ETB and death effects you print to anticipate them happening on the first upkeep. Mana cost is one of the central "knobs" they need to be able to turn during card design. The existence of cards like flash make that knob useless, because it wouldn't matter if hulk cost 7 or 8 or 20. It makes a lot more sense to therefore ban OP mana-cheating spells like Flash, and to get your design & development space back. Protean Hulk is fine at 7 mana. A 7 mana creature should be able to do almost anything. Banning it on the basis of what you can do with a card like Flash is just giving up on the idea of having mana costs matter, at which point the game falls apart. Really the main problem with Flash is obsolete design philosophy. In Mirage and prior there were barely any creatures with beneficial ETB/Death effects, so the way they worded it was just a cleaner version of how you WOULD design such a card for its intended effect these days, which would be like.. "Reveal a creature card in your hand. You may pay its mana cost reduced by up to 2. If you do, put it onto the battlefield".

Flash is doing the rounds again in Vintage by allowing to cheat Atraxa, Grand Unifier and drawing a whole bunch of cards.

The new Tyvar landscaper also breaks Hermit Druid by both allowing to activate it as it has haste, and being able to bring it back from the graveyard with its -2 ability.

The explanation of the Flash-Hulk combo line doesn't actually work, misunderstanding the stack at various points. If you target Guide with Kiki-Jiki, and then sacrifice Guide, the ability won't resolve because it lost its only target. But if you wait until the ability resolves, it also won't work because the copy will ETB before Guide is in the graveyard, and there won't be time to sacrifice it (or Kiki-Jiki) before you are forced to choose targets. What you actually have to do is sacrifice Kiki-Jiki in response, which will still allow the copy ability to resolve, copying Guide only after Kiki-Jiki is in the graveyard, which then lets you bring back it, untapped once more to start the loop over again (now up a token copy of Guide with haste). Of course, that's mostly irrelevant, since nowadays there's the much more efficient Thassa's Orcale kill, where a single Hulk pile can bring out the full Cephalid Breakfast combo with only 3 mv worth of creatures, to mill out your entire library, and still have 2 mv left to also bring out Oracle itself and instantly win. And unlike clunky five drops like Kiki-Jiki/Karmic Guide, you can also just naturally draw your tutor targets and cast them to win without Flash.

As multiple people have said, Flash is the really broken card, as opposed to hulk which is still broken, but only after you jump through multiple hoops and include several bricks in your deck. (Hoops which flash conveniently jumps through). There are several other hulk combos in Legacy, which are all fine to bad without flash. Also, MTG bans tend to go after enablers rather than payoffs. The real fix for flash is to only put the card in after you pay for it. It'd be unplayable after that though, so a slight rework might be in order. Flash #2 (U) The next creature spell you cast this turn can be cast as though it had flash. That spell can't be countered. Draw a card.

Flash needs to remain banned not just because its a powerful combo piece, but also that it allows for extremely unfair value beyond that. Imagine casting flash, dropping Ashen Rider where you get both its exile target permanent ETB and Death triggers all for 2 mana at instant speed. The card just doesnt work because it will only get better with power creep.

You gain infinite life thanks to the Bishop and you have -) Maskwood Nexus + Bishop of Wings + Goblin Bombardment + another creature : infinite ping, ETB and dying / Leave the Field. -) Throne of Geth + Su-Chi Cave Guard + Scarecrone + 2x Dross Scorpion: infinite colorless mana, ETB, Dying and proliferation. Also, stuff like Mizzium Transreliquat, the Mishra from Time Spiral or Drafna can help with the 2 copies of Dross Scorpion. -) Sliver Queen + Basal Sliver + either a Heartstone or any sliver giving haste + any sliver giving a TAP ability: infinite ETB, dying, maybe mana or any other TAP related ability, like Psionic Sliver. -) Bloodchief Ascension with 3 counters on it and Mindcrank: infinite drain and mill. -) Elite Arcanisth with Dramatic Reversal "imprinted" on it + enough mana rock / dork. It's not a winning (or infinite) combo, but it DOES feels like.

Hermit Druid should probably just be unbanned. We have cards nowadays like Balustrade Spy that can achieve the same mill effect immediately on an ETB trigger, and alternatives like Undercity Informer who can be activated right away if mana is available. These two cards have only gotten better, in fact, since flip land cards were printed as well, meaning mana fixing for manaless dredge or all spells decks are already perfectly well equipped. I don't think Hermit Druid would be fast enough to compete with these options, so unbanning it likely wouldn't change any current deck strategies or make them less balanced since those kinds of decks aim to kill as early as turn 0 or 1.

Hermit Druid would have been a yes before Tyvar was released which would let you activate it immediately and also reanimate it. With Tyvar I reckon druid could be a problem.

Flash is such a classic

May I suggest that you do a variant of this series, in both Magic and Yugioh, with errata'd cards (of course, the "can it be unbanned" would be replaced with "can the errata be undone")

It's not just hulk that breaks flash. Even flashing in something like academy rector can be just broken, you can't ban the payoff over the enabler because flash is the enabler. It's why cards like survival of the fittest got banned, you can either ban survival or you can ban every card that has ever been good with survival. It's a card that only gets better with time; when it was banned, it had just tyrannized an entire grand prix that was nicknamed GP Flash. Leyline of the void was legal at the time of it's ban and is a great way to stop flash death triggers, but no one cared because 1U: win the game is just far too effective. Also of note, the pact cards from future sight weren't legal at the time of flash getting banned with two just helping the deck immensely in pact of negation as free protection and summoner's pact to grab the hulk. Hermit druid is a one card combo too. Could it be unbanned? Yes, in theory. Does it improve the environment? Not really, it just makes it so decks need to be able to answer hermit druid or risk dying on turn 2 or something if people find good ways to give the druid haste. Frantic search we've been asking for an unban for years, high tide decks have been bad for years. The problem with keeping it banned is that it is fundamentally a turn 3 combo win card at best unless you try weird things like summer bloom with it. Lion's eye diamond based combo has a fundamental turn of winning on turn 3 or sooner, like if you average out all the average wins it hangs around winning turn 2.5 with LED based combo.

Flash absolutely cannot be unbanned because you'd need to ban not just hulk, but every single creature with a strong ETB or dies trigger in the game, like Worldspine wurm, Arena Rector, *ether* Emrakul, Karmic Guide, the Titans, the Primordials, Gary, Acidic Slime, Thragtusk, Hornet Queen, Terastodon, woodfall Primus, Agent of treachery, Hallowed spiritkeeper, Vindictive Lich, Yosei, Kitchen Finks, Murderous Redcap, Mikaeus, and more all would need to be accounted for and possibly banned or had the decks they support nerfed in order to enable this ***One*** card to be played, as well as restricting future designs in the same vien. AND it does all of this while *not* requiring you to play the colors of mana for those creatures, just Blue. So now reanimation is just available to you as a mono blue deck. Flash is immensely broken because the card *actually* has text "1U, Discard a creature: Activate that creature's ETB or Dies trigger." And when ETBs and dies triggers include shit like "take another turn", "create 3 5/5 wurms", "Opponent discards 2 cards", "Destroy three permanents", "Return target creature from any graveyard to the battlefield under your control", and "mindslaver your opponent", it's kinda impossible to make that "balanced" with those existing. So it's either ban like 20 fun, fair cards, or ban a single card everyone hates anyways.

Flash for many years going back almost to it's printing actually stated that the creature did not even enter the battlefield unless you paid it's casting cost minus 2 generic mana. If they returned the card to it's original pre-2007 errata, the card would be mostly worthless outside of being able cast creatures at instant speed that would be very helpful to cast at instant speed that doesn't already have flash. I remember making a HUGE rant about this card's changed erata texted back in 2007 soon after this card's errata as this card's errata changed COMPLETLEY changed both Legacy and Vintage in a ton of ways. Sadly, I was so bothered by the card and my post, I never went back to read my rant and it's most likely lost to time.

Gush is one of those cards that when it came out, my friends and I looked at it, thought "might be good, seems a bit steep". Then we played it and pretty much immediately realized how busted it was. Compare Legacy Doomsday vs Vintage Doomsday. Vintage Doomsday's most common kill is WAY faster than the legacy version... pretty much just because you get to play your single copy of Gush. Edit: I disagree about unbanning Hermit Druid. It's literally a better wincon than Stoneforge Mystic in hammertime. Also the vintage vs legacy doomsday comparison here was weird because literally Doomsday is fine in Legacy BECAUSE it doesn't have access to better, faster win conditions that require Gush. You know all those cards that hammertime uses to protect its creatures? Yeah, those would slot in fine with hermit druid.

Flash is honestly the more busted part of the Flash Hulk combo. Yeah, Protean Hulk is a busted card that can do some messed up things, but it's a 6 mana card that needs to die to function. Without Flash, there's a lot of hoops Protean Hulk needs to jump through to go off, since if you're cheating it out with a reanimator strategy, you also need to find a way to kill it, and potentially open yourself up to exile or bounce interaction. Sneak Attack is an all in one, but it's also 4 mana to cast plus an additional mana to activate, which makes it a lot easier to play around. Additionally, Sneak sacrifices it at the end of turn, meaning you need to go for a Protean Hulk line that doesn't win through combat damage, which is more specific and easier to interact with. Meanwhile, Protean Hulk isn't even the only Flash combo piece that wins on the spot. Academy Rector can also win on the spot, though the lines to make that work are a bit more finicky. Though really anything with a powerful ETB or death trigger is pretty abusable with Flash. If it were unbanned, and Hulk was banned instead, people would just find new ways to abuse it. Also, there are fixed versions of Flash, such as Savage Summoning, which lets you cast your next creature spell as though it had flash, rather than putting the creature into play, and then sacrificing it unless you pay its cost. Also, Hermit Druid just got a big boost in power if it were unbanned. The new Tyvar both allows creatures to activate abilities as though they had haste and can reanimate 2mv or less creatures from the graveyard. While I don't think this changes the speed of the deck at all, as it's a 3 mana planeswalker, it makes the combo a lot harder to interact with. If the opponent doesn't have instant speed interaction, you can combo off on the spot, and even if they do have the removal, non-exile isn't enough. Same goes for Thoracle, Cephalid Illusionist and Nomads en-Kor.

What silly format vintage is, turn three is to slow to win? That’s crazy! How is it even fun to basically either win on turn one or lose on turn two. Like I’m so glad I just spent $20000 to be able to play one turn in this format.

yeah i agree that flash could be traded out with hulk and would probably be mostly fine? but i heavily disagree with being able to unban hermit druid... the difference between being a 1 card combo and a 2 card combo is just absolutely huge and there is a million ways to make it work on the same turn you play it... it is still far far too good for most formats and wouldnt do anything to add to them... and i also disagree on the assessment about frantic search... i dont believe that card is able to see unban in any way due to the fact that yes it is too slow in all in combo decks it would push a deck like doomsday over the edge by being able to draw 3 cards then be able to immediately put a thassa's oracle on the stack (which would ultimately take away from the difficulty of the deck because it would be just put 2 free counter spells on top of deck then thassa's oracle and another thassa's oracle and maybe a land?) idk but seems like either way it would push decks that are willing to be patient and wait for the ability to go off on turn 2 with protection a little too over the top

Hermit Druid I feel is iffy to unban. While yes, it would share the same combo finish as Oops All Spells and Cephalid Breakfast, it does so with a very bare minimum of deck slots required to do so. The fact that your one card combo is a green creature you can find with GSZ is very powerful. You could probably get away with only running a couple Hermit Druid, a couple Narcomoeba, a Dread Return, and an Oracle to consistently win with the combo. That means you could pretty easily shoehorn this combo into some other competitive shell, which is where I think it might prove to be too powerful.

Flash was banned because it was restricted in Vintage. Flash and Brainstorm were restricted on the same day, thus banned in Legacy. Flash fit into many shells and Brainstorm pushed it over the edge. Protean Hulk isn't the problem card, replace with Academy Rector!

you aren't actually doing what hermit druid tells you to do. Druid tells you to "put that card in your hand AND all other cards in the graveyard." If I were a judge and you came with a deck with no basic land cards, I would say that the move is illegal since you can't actually pull off the cards effect which tells you to do BOTH(the word used is AND not OR) thus the ability gets automatically countered.

Gush would be ok to be unbanned honestly, especially in a format like legacy where fow just makes gush's caster wasteland twice themselves , that alone makes having gush in your deck just not worth it.

Considering how powerful Omniscience was when DTT was legal… nah. I know the meta has shifted since then, but Omniscience was way too good at what it did woth DTT in tow.

Disagree with Dig Through Time being unbanned. Doesn't matter that it has 2 blue in the cost, it's instant speed and the dig 7 helps with combo decks.
