I don't think Banner was simply trying to gain the 'hidden strength' he didn't have but lost in grief and a suicidal mindset. He didn't CARE if he'd gone into the danger level because IN HIS mind, he IS responsible. What he NEVER expected was, the overdose, causing a mutation in his very DNA and tied directly into his emotions and personal traumas. The Hulk is his anger, guilt, self loathing and inability to act... as a fully realised being in it's own right. The victim isn't going to BE the victim anymore. The Hulk is, his entire conscious or sub conscious, being STRIKING BACK!

Truly the best Hulk out. Bill Bixby really was amazing. In the rain when you see those eyes turn white you could see a dark force was about to take over David and he didn't even realized it. Lou Ferringo was amazong.

Beautiful but you GOTTA repost with higher brightness as this is arguably THE landmark scene in the entire history of the live-action comic book genre Gotta do this justice

I am glad that they threw in the fact that the gamma ray unit had not been fully calibrated before he bombards himself with what he thought was only an amount of 300,000 units. You needed that accidental overdose, otherwise it's not the Hulk. That's also why the Nicholas Hammond Spider-Man series fell flat because you didn't have that lesson in great responsibility in Peter Parker's journey. He just suited up and started fighting crime without any error in judgment that cost him the death of his uncle. You take the heart out of the story and you're left with nothing. Although this was a departure from saving a boy from being killed by a gamma bomb explosion and being hit with the blast himself, it is still self-inflicted and still accidental. And it's being done with Banner himself as opposed to him selecting a volunteer. He's willing to put himself at risk to prove his theory instead of subjecting a test subject and things going wrong. And it's also Bruce the victim of his own hubris and human error. What also works was the fact that the Hulk effect could be achieved if you had a certain kind of DNA. Making him unique allow the possibility for this side effect to happen. It's a shame that the narration in the intro didn't keep that part of the backstory. The follow up to our movie said the gamma radiation interacted with "his unique bodychemistry." They just took out the "unique".
