The ban on dog and cat meat trade at Indonesia’s notorious Tomohon Extreme Market came as a win for activists but a long road lies ahead, with only 22 out of 514 cities and regencies in Indonesia having issued some form of regulation against the trade.

When the demand drops drastically, the supply will stop too. This is happening in Vietnam. Many shops selling dog/cat meats have closed shop. Majority of Vietnamese now see dogs/cats as pets.

Actually what happen in Indonesia is very localize difference to Vietnam when almost all Vietnamese region have such a cultural meat. In Indonesia is only happen in small town call Tomohon, and it is Christian region. As Indonesia is majority islam so majority people and regions dont have such a cultural. 😅

Well, a majority of Indonesians are Muslims and Islam forbids the consumption of dog meat much like pork. The problem is that people living in North Sulawesi are predominantly non-Muslim, so those restrictions don't apply to them and it is problematic to ban the consumption of dog meat as it would imply "pushing Islamic narrative" to people who don't subscribe to it, a very sensitive issue in Indonesia. So I hope you understand it from this perspective

I heard that those are Christian regions of Indonesia. In India, it is also the same in the North East, where most people are Asian tribals and consume exotic meats. Most of them are also Christians in some of the Northeastern Indian states. I don't want to be racist, but the stereotype is a reality. I don't know probably it was related to ancestral lifestyle or culture of the tribals especially in South East Asia.
