This video looks at Act 2 Scene 1 of Macbeth. It explores the relationship between Macbeth and Banquo and reveals the subtext through analysing language and the use of iambic pentameter. It will guarantee you an A* on any question on this part of the play.

Macbeth and banquo both started of as similar characters, they both died in a similar way too, a tragic way. Banquo also admitted his inability to sleep at night- this could be because of his mind being corrupted with the thoughts of the meeting with the sinister sisters. could this link Banquo to Macbeth? being influenced by the diabolical shadows of evil

Do you have any tips for pushing my work to a grade 9? In my essays, I speak about structure, reader responses, interpretations, form and all the other stuff.

Shakespeare represents Banquo as noble, level headed and sceptical as he was related to James I, so why is Banquo then represented as selfish and a fool due to suppressing the knowledge he gives to others and his subsequent death? Surely James I would not like this? Could it be a subtle criticism of James?

Do you think you could ever be asked on any characters other than macbeth and lady macbeth? Like Banquo, Macduff or the witches???

You could be, but really, the only interesting thing about Banquo and the Witches is in how they interact with Macbeth and Lady Macbeth, so revising them will automatically disaster proof you against a minor character question!

mr Salles, do you think it would be wise of me to go through act by act annotating quotes or just to focus on the main themes and characters?- I also have my novel to do for English lit and don't have enough time

When Banquo says “all’s well”, could this potentially be a subtle religious reference to St Julian of Norwich, as she had “supernatural” visions of Jesus who told her “all shall be well”, this line is followed by banquo saying “I dreamt last night of the three weird sisters” suggesting he could have some sort of connection with the supernatural. Idk, just a thought that occurred whilst watching

I feel like there is no harm in mentioning that if it’s relevant to the essay question, the examiner will probably find it pretty advanced and clever. I would probably mention it as a possible interpretation on top of other less subtle interpretations though, so it doesn’t come across as a misunderstanding of the text. (Something I’ve found happens to me when I mention subtle interpretations without stating the obvious first.) I’m a year 11 so take this with a pinch of salt haha And good luck for Wednesday!!
