Thank you so much for watching this video of the Baofeng BF-F8HP Radio! Here is a link to where you can purchase it from Amazon: amzn.to/2KK3eps This model would work great for a Bug Out Bag or any other emergency kit.

Just watched this on the Amazon site for this radio .. your review is very well done and it helped me immensely. I have the UV-5RA. My father is 95 and has the UV5R. His battery doesn’t hold a charge and we were looking to get him another radio because it has been such a good one for the price. This review has me thinking I should order this one instead. I just subscribed to your KZfaq channel. Thank you so much for a very clear description. I will be looking for your other videos. I am impressed. 👍🏻😀

Wouldn’t buying a new battery for the UV5R be a tad wiser & less expensive than buying a new radio ? 🤷‍♂️😂😂

They are both very sufficient radios to have on hand. I have had mine in my pack and I have to admit I neglected it do to my scanner app and I wanted to make sure that the battery was ok. I took it out of its pouch turned it on, and in a year and a half the UV5R still had a full battery!!!

Just a note, with the PTT button in channel mode. You can program it to transmit to a blank channel, and the radio will just not transmit when you push PTT. I did that for all of the channels I scan.

The PTT button, or Push To Talk, will switch you over to transmitting when held. This is what requires a HAM license in the US so in Jimmy T's case, he programmed it so the PTT didn't do it in his case.

Good review, I have the UV-5R and really enjoy it for the price. When it comes to higher power radios remember, you have to double your watts to increase your antenna's db. Technically speaking although the 8 watt HT does double the UV-5R's power the increase in db at 8 watts is still minimal. The single most important factor in a radios performance is the operator and the operators skill level not the output power. Thanks for the video I might pick one up just for fun

Great review! I've been looking into getting the UV-5R, but now I'm glad I saw this. The new model looks like the way to go. After upgrading the battery and antenna on a UV-5R, I'd be pretty close to the same price. Sadly, I don't know of a good channel or video to recommend. I've seen a few, but none really stand out.

Also remember though, that in a life or death emergency, any of these frequencies can be used for communication without a license. I thought I would mention that since your video is directed towards preppers. Also, the FRS frequencies can be utilized without a license as well at any time.

FRS, GMRS and MURS are all now LICENSED BY RULE. I am pretty sure (with exception; GMRS requires a license, no exam just pay $70'00). Conduct yourselves accordingly. That's that. Do not interrupt others and do not be ignorant/rude/profane, or otherwise negative. The FCC does not have the time, manpower or resources to track down all the people/children/families/hikers/campers/workers using 0.5W, 2W or 5W frequencies...that are provided for public uses anyway! It is ridiculous and it is obvious. Furthermore, these are bands that do not interfere with amateur Ham radio operators anyway, so I really do not understand the technician license holders getting so irate over people showing an interest in the exact same system/hobby that they are interested in! That is also RIDICULOUS! Why would I care if anyone gets a fine? Instead of encouragement and positive support it is "You don't have a license. I do! You aren't allowed to do that. I am!" If that is what amateur radio clubs are all about I'm going to have nothing to do with them, or their shite licenses.

@@imjustmetoo7419 It was ok. I wish I had spent more on a better radio. I wish I had never sold it. I botched the sale pretty badly. Forgot the earpiece and everything. I feel bad about it still. The radio didn't reach very far, even with a Nagoya 20 inch whip antenna. It was a ridiculously big antenna. Still I recieved almost nothing. My advice to anyone who wants a baofeng is to save your money for something more high quality like a Yaesu or an ICom, get a base station if you actually want to communicate with more than static. I'm a ham from canada. Rules to be a ham in canada are kind of strict. That is all a possible explanation for my sour experience with it. But I am not letting it get me down. I am hoping to invest in a new base station soon. Ham radio rulez -CK

I'm hoping that being on a hilltop (843 ft above sea level) will help me receive signals better.

@@imjustmetoo7419 It still picks up the emergency weather stations just fine from almost any front porch, and that could be critical in a disaster situation. I've seen people mod their baofengs on youtube to reach crazy distances. It can be done. I just believe that I am a poor study at ham lol. I threw money at the problem and it got me nowhere. A good ham with some tinfoil and copper cable can do wonders. They're not wrong when they describe the unit as being incredibly versatile. It is a platform you can use to do great things. Again, I regret selling my model. Especially since I live in the countryside. In rural parts. It could be handy in this situation regardless. For the price, you can't go wrong. Good luck with your ham radio journey. It's a wonderful and supportive community!

The extra watts with a good Nagoya or Diamond antenna and you have a very good emergency radio. The great thing about the uv5r is the price. I recommend getting the originals, they are about 22 dollars on Amazon and make excellent backups for your faraday cage. I have a couple BFF8HP's with NA-771's and they pick up damn near everything in my AO with excellent clarity. They also have CTCSS and DCS scan capabilities. Highly recommend this model as your backbone, its not that expensive, and once you learn to program it manually you won't find a better radio in the price range.

Communications plays a role in almost any disaster or emergency situation. Your ability to reach out, and get the help you need, is not only about your radio gear, but also your ability to use the gear and radio spectrum effectively. The radio by itself is useless. Think of training for survival and emergency communications like a First aid course, or some other course which gives you a specialised skill and you will inevitably find yourself asking whether or not you should get an amateur radio license. The answer short and simple is YES! This way you can add a skill to your Survival skillset, and be able to make the best of the tools on your communications toolbox. Finally, amateur radio is a utility. The training and practice we do in amateur radio are no different than my own tactical training, self-defense training, first aid, or hiking trips in the back country. Take it seriously, because it can safe your life, or help you save a life. This video is awesome :) Thanks again TUP

Thank you TheUrbanPrepper. There was so much information here I'm going to have to watch this again. The 100% backward compatibility approach with this radio and the standard UV-5R is an excellent feature by Baofeng and quite rightly that significance shouldn't be underestimated. In an emergency situation, having commonality with your equipment, especially items such as batteries and chargers is exceptionally useful and allows their sharing between devices and people if necessary, especially useful if yours are unavailable or inaccessible, to get comms up and running again and more importantly to keep them there. In this scenario it's also great that people will be able to use another's radio with little or no additional training, as they'll hopefully be well used to using their own. I wish this type of interoperability would be more widely adopted in all walks of life. Shared 73 M6GPY

I've had all different variations on the signal meter, it goes by strength only and not clarity, if the static is strong enough it will max it out, if quiet it'll be one bar, I heard someone talking the other day and had two bars on them, one test you can do prepper is press the monitor button when no one is talking and you can see a reading less than max if the static is just normal, I never found a follow up video did you make one yet?

I also have a BAOFENG BF-F8HP radio, and when you pointed out the type error "Protable" vs "Portable" it made me take a closer look at my label, and believe it or not it is actually spelled correctly on my BF-F8HP, which I thought was odd. Perhaps you have an earlier run of the same model and they corrected the mistake by the time mine was in production. Either way I thought you would find that interesting.

Ik it's unlikely that i will get a response... but what license is recommended to have to use this radio? I mostly intend on using GMRS channels 15-22 (around 462MHz) due to compatibility with more basic 2way radios but I would like to be able to operate on the other frequencies of the radio. Also, what would be a recommended frequency for recreational communication between a few individuals?

What voltage does the charger want? It would be nice if it needs 11-14 volts then can charge from car, 12 volt battery or solar panels.

If your team already has a file version of CHIP with all the repeaters & frequencies CERT uses in our area programmed in for the UV-5R, can you use the same file for this radio (BF-F8HP)? Or is it a whole separate program?

I'm in the process of putting a tiger tail together and waiting on a 1/2 wave telescopic antenna! Next is buying a roll up slim jim/j pole. Best ways to beef up the radio apparently. Check em out.

What is the avg battery life? I understand that the more power you use the shorter the battery liff, if all your doing is listening, then you have longer battery life. If using the FSR freqs, is it ok to xmit?

Does the charging cradle for the F8HP still blink annoyingly when nothing is in it? I cannot figure out why you would ever want that. I have to unplug the cradle when I don't have the UV-5R in mine.

Ha! I actually watched the whole commercial before start because it was on how to get your Ham Radio License! While it doesn’t pertain to me because I have one, I was glad to see the programmers at google getting smarter with their ad match ups, & because I realize a lot of your viewers might not have a license yet.
