I just need to make a comment or two on this radio. I've been a scanner enthusiast for some 45 years and I must say this radio is out performing some of the higher end ht's I've owned. The reception is full quieting, and I'm receiving police and fire signals from areas that I ordinarily would not. When I purchased the radio I primarily wanted it as a scanner and quite frankly for the 30 dollar price tag its sooo worth it in my opinion. 73's

Some radios are equipped with a reverse repeater function that flips in/out frequencies. This would allow you to clone a friend's repeater frequencies and settings on this BF. Other than the harmonics (which is a deal breaker) it's not a useless radio. If they fixed filtering like they seemed to on their other radios, it wouldn't be a bad radio.

The green button isn't meant as a scan feature; it's meant to determine the tones of a radio that is very close to you and not using a repeater. Meant more for people who are using mixed radio brands and no one knows if/how their radio is set up or if they have tones enabled.

I've been licensed now for 48 years so I'm older than young people, but, you know, back in the day, we made low pass filters for our radio's to assure we had awesomeness in our spectral puritans. Now days we have whiners who don't know how to make filters. But, hey, we still love our sad hams crying all day long. :)
@gregm.857
@gregm.857 4 ай бұрын
I've been licensed since 1978. Yes, in theory someone could build a filter and add it. But it would greatly reduce the portability of the HT, and would significantly add to the cost. It would also defeat the convenience of having a dual-band HT since the filter would essentially limit the radio to one band at a time. In spite of the theory, in practice I disagree with your comment. I'm glad this video was posted, the measurements will save me from making a bad purchase. I'll stick with my IC-V82. 73
@BusDriverRFI
@BusDriverRFI 4 ай бұрын
@@gregm.857of course an amateur will need to determine what they want to spend money on and how they would want to work on the device. My FT5DR has very low harmonics. I guarantee that building a chebyshev filter would cost less than $400. I don't know how the radio is made as to whether a VHF chebyshev could be built that would have the uhf section bypassed or whether there could be adjustments to the radio. I actually have a UV5R-EX version with pretty low harmonics for 2m. Why did they get it right there? They look like 50dB down on that thing. If you don't like the radios without support, don't buy them like you say. But for those who would like to experiment, there are options besides whining about items that can be remedied on the bench. I don't have the answers here on the best solution, but I know there are solutions out there besides whinging about ultra cheap radios not performing like multi hundred dollar radios. These guys recommend putting power absorbing 1:1 transmission line transformers and viewers think spending money that doesn't help is a cool thing and it makes sense people would complain about a project that would actually help.

I work in high-rise building and this device works well in 60-70 floors buildings and if a new subcontractors comes to work I am very easily copy the frequency in there device to be in touch. The green button scan tool works okay. It gives you the frequency and it gives you the tone. From there I can find what I need but just about every other radio I have, if I want to do something similar I have to go into menu then manually try every tone option where this one will at least give me the tone they're using. I can easily figure out ohhh it has a +.6 offset or a +5 offset or a ...that's no big deal, learning the tone is the hard part. Saving it as a channel is a cool feature and it should work, I haven't spent any time trying to figure it out myself yet but learning the tone is the hard part and it at least can do that.

The green button = 【One Key Frequency Match】The ham radio has a one-touch frequency matching function, easy pairing and grouping(Copying channel configuration parameters). Convenient for you and your partner to set up quickly. It's not described in the operations manual as a scanner for repeaters. The antenna is just OK. I use the {Authentic Genuine Nagoya NA-320A Triband HT Antenna 2M-1.25M-70CM (144-220-440Mhz)} on my Triband Baofeng radios. The 5rm is advertised as an 8 watt Tx but 7.8 watt is the best I've seen... so close enough. One thing that I don't understand... sometimes when I choose a repeater's frequency it will automatically set the off-set and tone (code) but other repeaters I must lookup and set manually. I'm not going to offer a guess why. I've only had my Technician license for a few weeks (so I'm still learning)

Also, Baofeng doesn't care about spurious emissions because half of their customer base makes fun of people for giving a shit about how their radios splatter across the spectrum. Perpetuated by various assorted yotube superstars, mostly. They won't care if we don't care, they have made that plain as day. Baofeng just wants to sell radios they will make them however people will buy them and if no one cares then they won't either. Personally I am about to send mine back. I bought an unlocked AR5RM and it splatters a half watt into 300MHz that's a lot of battery power going somewhere I do not intend. Most of the other harmonics wouldn't even make it to the end of my coax, so I'm less concerned about those. But that half watt first harmonic is a turd. And I figure if I give them an RMA and tell them exactly why, maybe that'll raise someone's eyebrow over there. I don't NEED a thirty dollar radio. I can buy a fifty dollar radio, put some filters on it.

I don't care about either of those systems. Amazingly, I'm very happy with the UV-5R now that I can program it with Chirp and do what I enjoy the most. And, at under $30, who cares if it gets lost or stolen? Another $30 and a quick repeater/simplex restore from Chirp and I'm back in bidness! -KK5DON

Agree. CHIRP is a game changer with the UV-5R series.

Right after posted the above message, I found where a UV-5R is selling for $18! Complete with an earpiece with a PTT button! I think it was on Amazon. How could I not get a couple of them? I call them my 'throw-down' HT's!

The best thing about this radio is how much it makes you sound like a hyena with a thorn up it's rear. Im goingbto buy a bunch for the elementary kids and tell them to only use the ham bands cause they'll hear a bunch of squealing.

I just got mine and used it on the local repeater for 45 minutes with no issues. I really like it, for the price I think it's pretty good. Only issue is when transmitting, be careful to not touch the battery contacts or tu pull get an RF burn. But that's common with these cheap radios.

I have one. It's great! I paired it up with a better antenna, and it's fantastic. The only downside so far is that I haven't been able to get odmaster to work with it, so I've been stuck with CHIRP.

You're right. One thing you didn't say up front is the thing's a brick, and all to support the stupid color display. Yes, color displays are nice, but they get old fast. If you just want to use it and you don't care about color, get another radio.

I thoght the same with the little green button, to scan for open frequencies (new at this, gimme a break). Found that swirching to Frequency Mode (not Channel Mode), you can yhen search for used open frequencies by holding down #. Now, how to save them, heh.

That is why I do not buy a new radio when first come out. look how bad the first gen of talk pod A 36 was. then you get a clean one. mine is not as clean but is a pass on VHF because 2nd and 3 rd. harmonic is quite low. to bad you did not test right away you could have sent it back. I was going to do that with the talk pod. I almost did but girlfriend wanted green radio and it did pass the harmonic test . the talk pod does that close capture read out . had to re program a button . that radio is sold under a few different types. wounder if they going to fix it. Baofeng has fixed some . Nagoya has a tri band antenna. sucks you have to spend more money on a band pass filter than the cost of the radio just to use 2 meters. thank you for testing this one. 73's

hi, with respect to your opinion i reject the conclusion from my point of view. i bought the identical twin of yours, the uv-5rh v.1, which operates very fine on almost every frequency even with a home made flower pot antenna...i can copy any frequency and tone from nearby devices, i can rx the aviation, 2500mah battery is more than ok, it feels fine in hand, well made in many ways. the power in high mode is around 8 watts. what else to expect? the only thing i may complain is the red color fonts in the menu. a bit hard to read in broad day light. in comparison to my other radios, i may call it my new favorite budget radio. it deserves every dollar spent. may yours be a counterfeit unit? a fake one? or mine is a lucky seed?

Looks like an issue with the screen backlighting, not covering the full screen area towards the bottom. I must have been lucky. The BF-5RH/UV-5RH has a Black Background with White digits, very easy to read. perhaps there is some variance between models as to which type/colour of screen one gets.

Interesting but another Tuber tested the 5Rm against a Vx-76 and the Yaesu was dirtier. I have the 5RM for a month know, tested and clean and all of the functions perform as advertised. Please do a follow up video testing your Yaesu against that terrible Baofeng.

Sad Ham doesn't understand clone....It isn't to scan, it is to clone a close by HT's settings for when you meet up with others. The 5RM receives better then any other $30 HT, and punches above it's price point. This isn't an HT for a radio nerd (people who pcare about spurious emissions) , it is an HT for someone who doesn't wanna spend $300, but wants a decent, easy to use radio.

Drama. Many will be happy with twice the power, and some new features at a great price. I notice you didn't check the UHF spurious - which is fine. I mainly use UHF for my local ham scene and repeaters. I think it's a good option for me. Can't wait to try the Air Band as some added value. W6LG looked into the FCC documents and it's legit. He has a much bigger dummy and his testing was line-ball with the FCC paperwork. Was he just lucky to get a good one? Maybe, but he rates it a bargain.
