How good is this low-cost radio? Today we will take a brief look at the Baofeng UV-5R, It's construction and performance.
The UV-5R is a low cost handheld F.M. transceiver with a very wide range of operating frequencies in the 2 Meter and 70 Centimeter bands. It can transmit at a max output power of five watts. The radio has all the features that you would need to interface with repeaters or other radios, such as frequency offsets and DTMF tones. It even has nice features - like a dual watch. You can expects a usable range of a couple miles with stock antennas.
The physical construction of the radio is very solid - the antenna defiantly leaves a lot of room for improvement thought! The battery last for more then 24 hours of standby. Unfortunately its not waterproof. Other then that, the China's really outdid themselves this time!

Excellent video! ..You're succinct which really helps in any video. And showing the receive at specific distances was ideal.. Seeing the signal getting weaker as you got farther away, I was thinking how the signal would be stronger overall on two-meter, because the band just talks further. Plus the longer wave cuts thru the leaves better if you're in the woods. Two-meter wavelength at about 38" -vs- 70cm at 12". Again - Great Job!

I like your range test. I cant believe some people in the comments threatening to "take the video to the FCC " or demanding that you give your call sign. I didn't know it was a law to prove your call sign on a youtube video to appease other people. Ill give the benefit of the doubt and say you definitely could have used your call sign at yhe beggining and just edited it out. People demanding your call sign is ridiculous, petty, and the equivalent of seeing someone park and get our of their car at Walmart and running up to then and saying "do you even have a drivers license ? Show me or i wont believe you and ill report you!"

An FCC license is required for operation, or a licensed operator needs to be present, and all regulations need to be adhered to. A technician's license is not difficult to obtain. It requires a bit of studying, but it is not rocket surgery. :)

@RyanGr33n
@RyanGr33n 2 жыл бұрын
According to “the books”, you can’t use these for anything other than HAM frequencies with a HAM lic. Even if you have a HAM lic, you can’t legally use these one the FRS/GMRS freq either due to the wattage and the fact that the FCC hasn’t approved these for that purpose. Even a GMRS lic won’t allow you to use these. There is literally no legal use for these outside of HAM. However, the FCC doesn’t really give a crap, and neither does anyone else except grumpy, single, keyboard-warrior HAM operators. Don’t do stupid things with them (like Interfere with EMS or police) and nobody will care. We use these on fishing trips on GMRS freqs just to keep in touch across the lake or up/down stream. Nobody is even within range, much less on our freq to give a crap about who’s going back to camp to make lunch. I promise nothing you’re doing is interesting enough for anyone to care, much less report, investigate and write you a ticket. Side note: the FCC has literally never given anyone a ticket or even a warning regarding Baofeng radios. Ever.

I will say this.... if you want to prolong the life of you re-chargable battery, you must give it a good 6 to 8 hours (overnight) charge before the first use. It builds up a memory inside the battery and you should allow the battery to become dead once a week and then fully charge it again. I noticed you said to put it together and you are ready to go. No.......There is no telling how long those batteries sat in that box before it arrived at your house. Allow a full hot charge before first use.

So do you have your license yet? I have mine. Just the first one the technician class, but I am legal when it comes to operating said Baofeng. As for that stock antenna, its junk. I suggest the ABBREE 18.8 inch antenna. The program you use to set up frequencies and repeaters is called CHIRP and you will need a programming cable. But at least you showed the range, with the stock antenna. A good after market antenna will stretch your range out too 3 to 3.5 miles.

Question about this radio, can you monitor police frequencies while communicating on channels without transmitting to police or can you only do one or the other? Basically when I go on car cruises with others I want to be able to talk to them on channels but with police chatter in the background.
@HoffmanTactical
@HoffmanTactical 3 жыл бұрын
There is a way to do this, but it's not fool-proof. You can set up one frequency to listen to the Police and the other to communicate with others. There is a function that will run on your normal frequency and then swap over to the other (police) frequency when it detects a signal, you must be careful or you may accidentally transmit on the cops frequency. Take a careful look at the "chinglish" Baofeng manual and you will find the function.

There are too many factories and many many brands for these kinds of cheap chinese radios with poor quality control. You really need LUCK to get a good one. Last time, we had a big game in the mountains. Almost every radio (we had a lot of radios including Chinese, Japanese, Taiwanese and even a few of pricy Motorola digital radios) could not work. Scot, chill out dude. There are thousands of these out there being used by campers, kids, people on cruise ships etc etc none of whom have a "license". The fact is nobody enforces the rules. Speeding is illegal, running red lights is illegal, millions of people do those things every day and never get caught. I am sure the FCC, with their minimum number of enforcement officials, have bigger things to worry about than some kids playing in the woods with "unlicensed" radios. @@cjlane4465 first of all. CB is an AM transmitting radio. This radio transmits in FM. Secondly, the CB frequencies are in the 29 Mhz frequencies not in the 70 cm bandwidth. Yes this radio can transmit on both FRS and GMRS frequencies. But even with a license both for ham radio and gmrs, this radio is rated for 1 watt on low power which in turn makes it automatically illegal on the FRS bands. This radio also does not meet any of the narrow band requirements for transmitting on either FRS or GMRS....therefore it is illegal to use in that regard based on FCC guidelines. I am a licensed operator for both gmrs and for AMATURE RADIO. I know what I'm talking about. Here is the problem with his recommendation and the video. He wasn't transmitting on gmrs or FRS frequencies in this video. He was transmitting on the amateur band frequencies. He claims to be licensed but until he posts his call sign on here....I ain't buying it. Now I will post my Amateur Radio call sign so you can check me out. I don't run my mouth without knowing what I am talking about. I'm recommending you don't either. Don't ever preach to someone that invested his time checking the legalities of this for the last year.
