Baraka is a 1992 American non-narrative documentary film directed by Ron Fricke and produced by Mark Magidson.
The word Baraka is defined within various Eastern religions as a powerful spiritual blessing that flows throughout many different aspects of life.
The Baraka project was filmed by a only 5 person crew, over a period of 14 months, in 24 different countries, and while spanning 6 of the 7 continents.
This is a short documentary released in 2008 about the 8K scanning and restoration process undertaken with the original film stock
Baraka was shot on 70mm film and then scanned at an oversampled 8K Ultra High Resolution (8,192 pixels across the frame) with DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 @96k/24bits. It was then output onto Blu-ray in Full High Definition 1080p at a 16:9 Widescreen aspect ratio.
The scan done at 8K was oversampled, which means the film was scanned at a higher resolution than what was necessary for the final 1080p output that they intended and produced.
The purpose of scanning at 8K though was to create a super sharp, but down-sampled version of the film scan once it was output at Full HD 1080p. Thus, the resulting image from the 8K scan is a sharper quality 1080p output than if they had just scanned the film at 1080p or at a 4K scan resolution. The 1080p output from the 8K scan is also now perhaps an even better quality version than the original film print when viewed digitally on either a 1080p or 4K display.
The unanswered question though is if an 8K scan from the 65mm native film stock would produce an even more desirable looking image at 4K than at the 1080p resolution output which they had decided upon for this production.
But without there being any 4K sample outputs available (AFAIK) from the original film print to 8K scan (in order to rule out whether or not a 4K output might introduce any undesirable flaws, artifacts, or reveal any weaknesses from the physical film print at such a high resolution scan) it remains a question that still can’t be fully addressed.
In this video they also briefly mention DVD, which may be a bit confusing, but I can confirm that the 8K scan was never output at 480p resolution and was only ever released at 1080p resolution on Blu-ray.
One can still purchase the full Baraka 1080p film on Blu-ray from the 8K scan, which also includes this short documentary titled "Restoration" as a special feature on the disc. The Blu-ray disc also includes another 1+ hour documentary titled "A Closer Look” which is a BTS documentary on the shooting and production of Baraka itself.
Thus, the full 1080p version of the Baraka film, the "A Closer Look" documentary, and this short "Restoration" documentary are all included together on a single Blu-ray disc which is available from the link here: amzn.to/2Ii5na4
A final note in that I do not possess any copyrights to the content of this video nor is it my intention to infringe upon any existing copyrights of this content in any way. I also have no personal connection or otherwise to the producers of this video or to the creators of the Baraka film.

@HalfgildWynac
@HalfgildWynac 3 жыл бұрын
@@FahadAyaz Yes, they are talking about 100 % raw, uncompressed scan. Given just how much work went into scanning the frames, they would rather keep the original in case they ever need it in the future. A JPEG would have made it 20 times smaller, and look almost the same at that resolution (but they probably use 10 or 16 bits per channel, and maybe a logarithmic format). Video compression in 2007-2008 was adequate. Making that film take 80-200 GB at 8K would have been doable (if you had found the right codec and a PC that can play such video) but they of course would not have stored or color graded the original in THAT quality.

They wayyyy too heavily focus on certain types of cultures sort of in a "see this simple way is better" type of a message that gets annoying and preachy real quick. Was unbelievably fortunate enough to see an original 70mm print of this film in a theatre setting twice - once as a high schooler, once as a college student. I know this video is about selling the fidelity of the 8k, but nothing will ever beat the analogue. The 8k restoration is a great experience at home on your TV and way better than the previous commercial option, absolutely worth getting because this film is a masterpiece. But it can't ever and won't ever beat the print.

Are you talking about the 4K file on KZfaq? I downloaded the remux file in a torrent... I think that file is actually 1080p upscaled to 4K. Some of the shots are clean, but others seem obviously upscaled. As far as I know there is no official 4K release, so the source was used to "re-grade" or create the 4K HDR file must've been the HD bluray.

The fact that it was then only released in 1080p Blu-ray was a slap in the face of movie-lovers all over the world. Now, finally, it has been released on 4k UHD, but as of yet only in a box-set with a couple of greats and some dross. Go figure. I applaud any venture which is willing to invest in the preservation of great movies at the highest quality man is capable of right now. Interestingly; I write this in 2020, and still, neither Baraka nor Samsara are available in 4k. And please don't say that you can stream them at 4k. "4k" streams are heavily compressed and not to be compared with the bitrate of a well made 4k Blu-ray disc with UHD.

In simple words: a 4K Blu-ray (or digital copy) does not exist because even though it was scanned in 8K, the final restoration and digital master is only HD resolution. @@inkusaido It's very likely that they still have the 8k raw digital scan however that was performed in 2007 which brings up a good question: is that 2007 8k scan good enough for 2021? With recent digital restorations, companies still try to get a fresh scan because technology often evolves. Many films were mastered in HD format in the early 2000s for DVDs but are given new scans for bluray releases. Now, we have new formats such as HDR and Dolby Vision which didn't exist back 2007.

@@vangmx As the video puts it, 8K seems to be the optimal digital resolution for 65mm. I guess a "bigger" scan just gets more detail in the films grain, as a weird way to put it (since the films details are limited by the chemical medium and not necesarily by the scan). Here in 2021 8K is just starting to land on the consumer side, and on the digital camera side it's getting a little push with the Olympics. When this was released there was no reason to distribute a massive 8K master as it would look just as good as FullHD on the monitors of that year. But an 8K master of such and old film on modern displays must be quite something

Like paintings; technically there are no limits to its structure down to the atoms; unlike pixel images that always have a resolution floor. Think of it like 8x10 large format photography, or even larger negatives; no one complains about the beautiful depth of resolution of those images. Imagine that in the palm of your hand one day and way more. One other thing; resolution is only one part, dynamic range, color depth etc are also part of it all and just as important too.

When I heard down sampled to HD, I was like why, why not just stay in 8k, then I realized this video was uploaded 5 years ago, then I realized this video is much much older. I'm thinking 2005.

Interestingly enough, fan-restores old (original) version of Star Wars original trilogy was made in a similar fashion, but in home environment and with so many additional complications: changing backgrounds in the movie from digital remastered to scanned original canvas paintings; removing many digital additions that fans did not want to see; re-cutting entire segments; quality restoration and color correction using lots of different resources instead of fancy original 35mm film; and much more... AT HOME!

downsampling from 4K (or even 8K in this example) to 1080p is really effective to get non-aliased pictures. it would be interesting indeed what effort it would be to re-process the 8K source material and downsample it to 4K for example (having in mind current 4K TVs). or even directly play the digitalized 8K material on an 8K TV/screen.

you can scan up to 40MP from an 70mm film positive, for full archiving, put every frame to an compressed file (zip, png, etc.) and store it e.g.: to jp2000 format.

During the last upgrade of Baraka, they made new 70mm prints as well, but; didn't they additionally also make IMAX prints or am I thinking of another film/movie that did this? Maybe Samsara?

Would they need to rescan from the OCN to get HDR, if they were looking to release a 4k HDR in the future? Thanks.
@ErrickJackson
@ErrickJackson 3 жыл бұрын
it depends on how they scanned it. Given that HDR requires such a wide gamut (ideally P3 or larger), it's dependent on whether they were able to scan at such a gamut to allow for clean color information across 1000nit or higher range of luminance. I mean, it's Fotokem, so despite when this was done, it's possible. At the very least, the film has the information available.

I dont know when this was done but 65mm-70mm can be scanned at even higher resolutions. If I am not mistaken 65mm can deliver 12k! So they werent even close to overspamling anything in here.

I don't have any 8K displays (yet) but I'd love to see this in 4K (I don't have BluRay either). There's a bootleg "4K" version of Baraka on KZfaq - can't believe its still up after 8 months - but it seems to be just an upsample of the HD version - and it shows. Surely 65mm film would benefit from 4K vs 1K (HD) format?
