This is fantastic! The "toxic insincerity" is SUCH a danger, and several times when I've talked about positive psychology with people, they've assumed I was talking about this type of positivity and understandably pushed back. I love the metaphor of the sailboat--it's good to be reminded that we need to feel and express negative emotions and are NOT looking for a 3-0 ratio. Thank you so much for sharing this amazing research.

As a sailboat racer, the essence of catching the wind and trimming the sails has to do with listening to the weather, and wind, and feeling the boat's response. Listening and feeling are what we do with our environments to plot a course through positive and negative situations. We are fundamentally, unconsciously weaving our way through every day based on our past experiences. This calls for openness and a noncritical willingness to see what shows up for creative solutions when complex situations show up. Sometimes the support of an outsider, nurse coach, can be a helpful resource.

Fabulous! the metaphor of the sailing boat is extremely important to remind us that we need to feel and express also the negative emotions.

@Will Wilde The arithmetic was extremely flawed. It's regarded as pseudoscience nowadays, especially given B. Fredrickson refused to respond to any criticism after she was able to make a career monetizing her theory.

@Will Wilde KZfaq autodeletes links, will communicate through single post comments. EDIT: Yeah, most of my comments were removed by KZfaq's ever-faulty spam detection system. All the refutations are compiled on wikipedia though.

@Will Wilde Will. May I inquire if you are cognitively impaired? I sent you two arxiv links in your notifications which, if you used your head, you would have figured out are *the same two sources* linked in wikipedia. Also, have you *actually read* the wikipedia page? Since you need things lined up carefully for you, here are *15 unique sources* in references. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Critical_positivity_ratio#References
