I first saw her on this episode and to find out years later she also played in the movie Shiloh and she was Lila Bolander on Boy Meets World. And now I know her also from St. Elsewhere where she played Ellen Craig. Her husband William Daniels played Mark Craig also on St. Elsewhere. She made me hate her character in this episode but yet I love everything else I've seen her in.

Poor Rose. She may not have been all that sharp, but she did have a really good heart, and was wise in other ways. She definitely had many good qualities. That was one of the things I loved about this show so much, was how all these characters, who are all very different from each other, and actually have very little in common outside of being widows, and one of them a divorcee, was how well their individual strengths and weaknesses complimented each other.

I'd think many genuinely creative or artistic people would find Blanche and Rose entertaining. They're certainly more interesting than most of the pseudo-intellectual snobs Barbara must rub elbows with... meaning anyone who orders Edgar Allen Po-tatoes and considers themselves literary intelligentsia
@Moetaetae7 жыл бұрын
I felt the same way about Rose when she attended Miles' party that was all college professors. I would find Rose to be an absolute relief among the stuffy profs that were represented on the show. I wish I had been a character in the show that would have gone with Rose to make her feel more comfortable. The first thing I would have said would have been to the woman that said to Rose, "we were just hypothesizing if you could have anyone to dinner, living or dead, who would you invite?" Rose's reply is her roommates and Jesus. The two professors look at her with haughty derision. I would have come to her defense with, "hypothesizing? You were giving an educated guess about who you'd invite to dinner? Do you think maybe you'd like to pick another, grammatically appropriate word instead of trying to sound smart? I'll give you one. Confabulating. That gives you another whole syllable! And it actually MEANS what you're trying to convey! Peace out, you not very smart or nice person! Let's go get some drinks, Rose." I WAY overthink these things, lol.
@MyoclonicJerkCough7 жыл бұрын
Ha, good point about her choice of words! That scene bothered me too. Having Jesus over would be a lot more interesting/impressive than Browning with or without his wife. Even if someone said something odd why exchange disgusted glances and turn your back on them? Imagine having those two as your teachers, they likely act like that in their classes too. I would have probably just been like "Wow this party is too hardcore for me, excuse me" or "if they're dead do they come back as a zombie??" Buncha snobs!
@Moetaetae7 жыл бұрын
You're so right! I had a professor like that in college. She went to Harvard and loved to make sure EVERYONE knew it. In class, if someone took a couple seconds too long to raise their hand to answer a question, or if someone had to stop and think about an answer, she would loudly humpf and say, "this would be OBVIOUS if you went to Harvard." It was always so inspiring and dignifying! She called on me once for a question I didn't know the answer to, so I just said it for her. "I don't know, but it would be obvious if I went to Harvard." She was not amused.
@nassauguy487 жыл бұрын
First of all, I had no idea that Miami even HAD a literary intelligentsia. A restaurant that featured courses named after books and authors would be ridiculed in places like New York. Barbara was full of herself, and enjoyed being a big fish in a very small pond.

Besides Barbara Thornedyke she was right about Blanche's fiance, in the 1st episode, and Dr. Elliott Clayton. Yep! Once as a teenager I joined a youth group at a different church bc my church didn't have any people my age . However the vast majority of the kids there were spoiled, ,snotty and cliquey and of the few ones that were nice were hardly ever there.Once when the group was together at a mission trip and huddled and I said excuse me multiple times and they didn't budge until a girl they knew came through and let her in and continued to ignore me. And in another incident I said hi to one of the girls and she said "Don't talk to me 😑". After sticking it out for a year I told my mom that I hated it and didn't want to go there anymore.

Nice catch. :) I dislike how pedantic she is and has such a superiority complex. In the episode, she's not TECHNICALLY anti-Semitic but tolerates the prejudices of others for the sake of a free parking. This proves too much for Dorothy as Barbara's tolerance will directly affect Sophia's date in a hurtful and disgusting way.

@@Moetaetae It reminds of a certain scene in Django Unchained. Calvin Candie, the racist slaveowner, fancies himself a Francophile and loves Three Musketeers. However, Schultz spells out to Candie that the author, Dumas, was black. Dumas specifically had Haitian ancestry. It shows you how idiotic racist people are.

Phuc You The thing that l always noticed was the layout of the house not matching the opening shots. For example the garage is at the front right of the house but the door to it is in the kitchen at the back left of the house. This is one of many episodes I hated. I love the actress but her character on this episode was downright snobby. She wouldn't let Sophie's date come to the restaurant that they were going to because of his heritage.
@Moetaetae7 жыл бұрын
Although this wasn't a particularly hilarious episode, it did what many episodes of this show did and shined a light on social issues that are not/were not easy to talk about.
@benleung63317 жыл бұрын
Tiffini Steele Are you serious? This episode is a riot, just because it revolves around an obnoxious character doesn't make it any less funny. Notice how Rose felt so reassured when Blanche kept agreeing with her on how she felt about Barbara only to realize, after a long double take, Blanche was agreeing how dumb she is, brilliant writing I would say
@laurenmontera95166 жыл бұрын
That was the point of the episode. Some people are truly arrogant. This gives Dorothy a better image because as intelligent as she is, the line is clearly drawn defining what is being snobby and just being an introverted skeptic, not judging others for their backgrounds or current standing.
