The thing that made me so sad about Keith's character is he was trying so hard not to make Tess uncomfortable. He's fully aware he is the more threatening party, and is trying to come off as unthreatening as possible. But he's clearly at a loss of how to handle the situation and it just comes off as awkward. Those first scenes with Keith and Tess were very well-written and acted.

A totally opposite interpretation that I really like though is that Keith had actually planned on assaulting her all along (or possibly thought of it after the first night). There's SO many weird aspects to his behaviour as well as the overall situation that I totally missed on my first watch, but became glaringly obvious the second time. Plus, it fits with the whole theme of outward personas hiding evil within.

@@CaatsGoMoooowhat are the super weird parts that became clear your second watch? Honestly he reminded me of myself with some of the ways he acted since I’m very socially awkward so I could see how he was just a good person who acted weird. I also think it’s much more interesting for him to be a very awkward weird person who seems evil but is just a good guy rather then him being a weird awkward guy who seems evil and is evil. Plus I think it’s a good contrast with the theme of outward good hiding inward evil if he’s outward evil (or just weird vibes) covering up inward good

I love seeing the homeless man scene from the beginning again, because the first time you watch it you’re like “fuck he’s going to try rape her or something horrible” and even his delivery sounds aggressive. Second time though you realise that his delivery isn’t “aggressive” he’s genuinely pleading with her to get out of the house. Great little touches.
@Sunny-sc5vq

I got it the first time I saw that scene, because it is a repeated trope in movies. Make the homeless person look suspicious and at the end make him help the main character and then die helping the protagonist.

If he wasn't an stranger running towards her screaming agressively and instead ran towards her and call her maybe one time or ask her to wait so she could asses that he didn't represented a threat then maybe she would have listened. One of my favorite tidbits about this movie is that when Zack Cregger originally pitched it to people in Hollywood, everyone hated his script for being so chopped up and different. But eventually he found a producer who had some clout who also loved the story, and then that producer somehow convinced Disney to fund it...which saved the film.

I watched this in theater when it first came out and it surprised me in many ways. The film constantly plays on your suspicions and curiosity. After watching y’all review this movie, I’m catching a lot of good call backsI didn’t initially pick up on. Like, how the writers referred back to the conversation Keith and Tess had about how, if the tables were turned, Keith would have been able to walk into the house with Tess with no fear- then later in the movie you’ve got AJ finding this unbelievably disturbing underground room and tunnel- and instead of running out, he grabs a tape measure and just starts moseying through without a care in the world. Such a good, tight, horror film. Loved it!

The movie is definitely one of the best horror films of the year, and my personal favorite. The first act is so effective at presenting itself as one thing and getting you locked in before pulling the rug from underneath you. I went into this movie blind knowing very little about the plot. And it just blew me away. Barbarian took me in so many directions and scared me a lot! The mother is absolutely creepy to me!! 😬

I completely agree. Barbarian and Malignant are 2 of the best recent horror movies. We definitely need more like them.

I think the main reason this movie works is the fact that the 3 characters are all well developed.

This is one of the best of the year and how to make a unique and thrilling film with twists and turns. Tess And Keith would've been a cute couple and I want another movie with those actors together. Hope to get more horror movies with this director because he knows how to do this genre well.

I loved how the trailer felt like a different movie altogether. When I watched this, I wasn’t expecting this at all. It wasn’t a bad thing. I actually enjoyed this.

Watched this in the cinema yesterday in a full screen. Good times. Yeah it was nuts. Kept me fully stressed out but fun too. Nervous laughter, genuine laughter. I had a feeling that the guy who tries to get her to not go in the house wasn't a scary as he first seemed. I spent the whole time begging Tess to stop opening doors and just walking into the darkness. Justice for Keith!

the best horror movie I saw in a while. I remember being SO confused when the movie suddenly cut to this bright colorful scene and justin long driving in that car. I needed a few minutes to make sure that I didnt changed movies somehow. Really great film

This movie is bonkers in the most unexpected way. The jarring cuts to new characters and storylines. The jarringly uncomfortable camera angles that go on in the tunnel on Justin Longs character. Hella triggering my claustrophobia in the tunnel. The way they work with the flashlight in the tunnel is absolutely insane. The real horror of the man doing all the things to the women is played so well. And you get the perfect amount of information to be able to paint the picture in your mind without having to completely see what’s going on. The rape room reveal is enough to captivate your mind to anything that relates to it further along the movie. It’s honestly a perfect horror movie and top 3 of this year for sure

I grew up on WKUK, so I was super excited to see what magic Zach Cregger could bring to life. He did not disappoint! This movie was amazing. After watching, I pulled up old WKUK skits. Look up the grapist skit. The last 5-10 seconds of that skit is the main premise of this movie 😂

Watched this the other day after my husband watched it without me lol. We both went in not knowing anything about it. Was really surprised. I also like that at first, you think it's like something supernatural, but then no, it's just a poor woman that was basically trapped down in those tunnels with a monster that raised her to be like that. The part where she's trying to get help from the cops though. Oh man. It's like yay, she's getting help but obviously you know something is going to go wrong, but just the way it all went down where they just didn't believe her at all. You just get this sinking pit when they leave her.

The first half of the film is incredible, truly a masterpiece in terms of suspense and buildup and had me on the edge of my seat, but the second half just kinda falls flat for me, there's way too much going on at the same time and all the nail biting suspense just goes out the window once the woman mutant thing appears. I feel like if they had stuck to a simpler story, perhaps just a third occupant in the house and maybe not revealing who the person was until later, or maybe not revealing the third person at all instead of that whole plot with the serial rapist and his daughter.
