In this video I go over my favorite paint line up, Mr. Color paints. As far as airbrushing goes, these paints are just about fool proof. I also show how to get the best results when brushing them. On top of being easy to use they are inexpensive and come in a ton of colors.

I wish that all these big hobby paint companies would support your videos with some sponsorship and free paint and consumables as it's not fair that you are paying for all their free advertising out of your own pocket. Again thank you for all your knowledge that you share, Cheers from down under and looking forward on seeing more of your videos........Thankyou

Cheers from Oz.👍🏻 These Mr Color paints are the best I have ever used. Can thin them up to 70-80% and spray all day. Beautiful thin coats build up the colour in no time. I find I hardy ever get over 10-15 PSI, so easy to control.

I love these videos. You are doing a great service to the community. One thing I would say about brushing is you do want it to be thin but not as thin as air brushing and it is not a 'brushing' motion you want to use but rather a stippling motion and you don't want to re-break the surface by going over an area you just did. You can avoid all brush marks but the sheen will likely look a little different as the paint takes longer to settle. Same principals as you described with the metal. Lincoln Wright @ PaintOnPlastic has an awesome tutorial on hand brushing lacquers on his page. The dude is a hand painting god.

Great video, thanks for taking the time. Very interesting about the rapid thinner for metallics, going to have to check this out, been using MLT for everything and I think this will help a lot for improving metallics. A few tips, a nappy (diaper) bin is great for disposal of kitchen roll / waste when spraying lacquers, they are designed to keep the smell of shit at bay so work well for keeping the smell of lacquer thinners contained. Lint free or low lint wipes for cleaning the airbrush bowl, it stops paper/dust particles being left in the bowl and coming through on the next spray session after a quick colour change, a lot of cleaning supply companies have these and are pretty cheap, they are also more of a cloth so have more "cut" for shifting stubborn bits of paint. Lincoln Wright does great videos on brush painting lacquers for MaK models, interesting stuff about reactivating lacquers with MLT, you should check it out.

This video may be old, but you seriously just saved me so much sanity. I have been getting the Mr. Hobby Aqueous line of paints, but the Aqueous pink was out of stock, so I got Mr. Color pink. Tried using it 4 times and it instantly clogged my airbrush, I had no idea why. Didn't even realize it was a lacquer vs. acrylic, and definitely wasn't doing 1:1 (at least) thinning ratio.

A lesson learned the hard way. Purchased some glass mixing jars from Hobby Lobby. Placed reducer and paint in jar. Grabbed my trusty Badger paint stirrer. The result was not pretty. The Badger must have been hungry and ate thru the bottom of the Hobby Lobby glass paint jars. Spend the little extra for Tamiya paint jars.

Thanks for your tutorial. I am a novice on the airbrush, but using my Sparmax Max 3 (20 psi), and a 2/3 thinner (not self levelling though) 1/3 sail colour did a great job on the underside of my F2B wings. The upper side was the WNW PC10 mix in Tamiya acrylics, 50/50 thinner/paint, and again came out very well. And yes, regular hardware store lacquer thinner works very well as a cleaner. BTW, single use plastics are banned in most of Australia, so the source of testing spoons has dried up!

Uh hello, mr. Barbatos Rex! First of all i wanna say thanks so much for these videos, i've always wanted to get into painting gunplas, and these videos are a god send for me. Although there is one question that has been nagging my mind; What would you do if you want to paint say.. a joint part? For example, the RX-78-2 in the original anime of Mobile Suit Gundam, both the joints of the elbow and knees are colored white (or at least appears to be), so i want to try painting those joints that are most commonly grey for most kits of the RX-78-2. Would painting the joints be a problem when trying to pose the model? I am very concerned that it could cause the paints to be scratched off because of the movement. Obviously a good solution would be to not pose the kit after it is painted, but i would hope to be able to get some cool photos of the finished painted model in various poses. I really hope there's a solution to this! Thanks!

Hey man I recently just got into using the Mr Color line of paints and I tried using it as brush painting so I tested it with the same retarder you used on a spoon with Vallejo primer and the paint started looking cracked can you help me with any tips?

Dear Barbatos. Since you build a lot of car models you might have a tip for me. I have problems with getting a mirror finish with my paints. Often I have this orange peel surface and end up spending hours polishing it to get a good finish. Do you have any advise? Air pressure or high temperature drying or more layers with thinner paint? If you would like to make a video this would be greatly appreciated. 😉

Great video, excellent information. I have put off buying the Mr Color and Mr hobby paints based on using lacquers and thinning ratios. Now I am good to go. Best demo I have seen in ages. Can I ask what the needle size is you use? Many thanks and looking forward to the next informative video.

Really happy I came across your channel @barbatos rex! This video has been very helpful, was wondering if by chance have you ever experimented with painting Acrylic paint over the Mr Color Paints? Wondering if it would react with it poorly? Being that the main use of Mr Color is airbrush, for some of the finer details I have hobby acrylic paints. Was wondering if I could still use my go-to paints for the finer details that I can't achieve with an airbrush.

You sure can spray an acrylic on top of Mr Color. You can in fact spray or paint acrylics on top of any type of paint

Don’t turn the caps over. When you do the paint drips down and gets on the bottle rim, when you put it back on. Instead leave the cap right side up and set it on a paper towel. When you return it to the bottle it stays cleaner. I give up on stir urr like the ger in tiger. I can’t figure out how you say it wrong but at least you know it’s wrong. Good tip on the rapid thinner.

Unfortunately here in the US it's tricky. They only ship twice a year here. And then they sell out fast. Try Modo Paint, they're a carbon copy of Gaia and I love them. Also E7 Paints are also a copy. Both available here in the US

Are the thinning ratios the same for MR. Surfacer 1000? Also what thinning ratios would you recommend for Tamiya Lacquer? I am painting a Cylon Centurion glossy black as a base layer for Alclad Chrome. 1:1 or less thinner, I am using MR Hobby Levelling Thinner. And thanks for recommending that, it is awsome.

So can I pre-mix my lacquers and acrylics? For example I bought two jars of Mr Color Maizuru Grey for a Japanese destroyer Shimakaze. If I know I am happy with a 60/40 ratio would it hurt to combine them into a more permanent premixed container? And if so, what would the shelf life be? Also, I live close to the spraygunner shop and have visited their store a few times and I can say they are the coolest people ever. Super helpful and really a pleasure to do business with. Great equipment too, their No-Name Brand equipment is top notch and still affordable.

You will have no problem with pre mixing your paints. I have some pre mixed here and so far it's over 2 years and it's perfect. Just be sure the cap is on tight 👍 Spray Gunner is the best. I wished everyone I dealt with was as nice as they are

Great video. Question: The brushing process appeared to apply the paint on thickly. Will brushing obscure fine details on the model? Thanks
@barbatosrex9473
@barbatosrex9473 3 жыл бұрын
I feel you lose a little detail if you don't get the thickness of the paint just right. But if you can get the paint just thin enough and with a couple coats you should keep most detail but this is the main reason I mostly airbrush my kits or use spray cans. I will brush on detailing like gauges on dashboards and leave the large surfaces to spraying

Hi, for hand brushing, i dont see you thin the color with thinner, but just add retarder. Is that not neccessary to thin the paint if brush painting with mr hobby as i do thin when i brush with tamiya arcylic. Thanks
